Ep. 19 Grizzly G0514X2B 19" Bandsaw

I picked this up in December 2013 while Grizzly was having a year end
special.
A great deal and awesome value. The last bandsaw I will ever need.
While I was researching bandsaws I could not find any reviews of this
bandsaw, so I thought I would throw this out there for anyone else who
might be interested.
Assembly took about 3 hours total. The table had to be installed, and
that was about it. It came with a 1/2" 3 tpi blade which I promptly
ruined when I hit some nails cutting up the crating it was packaged in.
Duh!!

    I have the 14" version of this that I just finished restoring and I love it. This is my first Grizzly machine and I loved how I was able to order every part from their website at a very reasonable price. I will be buying more Grizzly tools in the future due to their support.

    +RetroWeld Thank you and it is very awesome. I have it tuned in very well and I can really cut a lot of stock quickly. It is really nice to cut through large pieces of wood without worrying about the stress releases that might cause binding or kick-back on my table saw. Thanks for your comments. Don

    Ken Nagrod Ken I agree. It seems funny (or not) that most band saws have the same casting marks. Hmm. I think it is just about quality control. I think Grizzly does a great job with that.

    Ken Nagrod Ken, I took nothing negative in your comments. I looked at the Rikon, General, and Laguna bandsaws. I was serious about the Laguna around the time the Grizzly deal came about. I heard good things about the Grizzly from Matt & Mike from Fine Wood Working, So I went for it.

    Don - I'm going to pick one of these up this weekend that I found on CL. Your video was extremely helpful. Thanks for posting it! I'm an electrical engineer and I may try and wire a sensor in the motor starter circuit to detect that the tension release is in the correct position. This will prevent it from starting when the tension is off. I think it will be a pretty simple modification.

    Scott, I think it will be for you. What are your thoughts? What comes to mind is a prox switch or a plunger type limit switch? Your thoughts? Don

  • @scottlight3688

    @scottlight3688

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@donvjgr Don, you're correct. Both will work. With the proximity sensor you just have to choose the correct one (probably a 2-wire AC prox, depending on the starter coil voltage). Limit switches are electrically simpler. The choice will come down to which is easier to mount in such a way as to not get out of alignment.

    @@scottlight3688 Well, when you do figure out what works best and your mounting solution (which is probably the most time consuming in my experience), please share that. Great review! Question: do you release the blade tension until you are ready to use it? If so for what reason?

  • @donvjgr

    @donvjgr

    6 жыл бұрын

    The idea is that releasing the blade tension reduces blade fatigue. I don't always release the tension on my blades mostly because I forget. But typically I do when I think of it.

    Hi Don, nice video. Question: are the adjustment wheels for blade tension and blade guard raise and lower, are they made of plastic or metal?

  • @donvjgr

    @donvjgr

    Hi Michael, The hand adjustment wheels are plastic. They appear to be a type of glass reinforced nylon, which would be appropriate given their role. They are pretty comfortable on the hands and large enough to give good mechanical advantage. Don

    I am currently considering purchasing the X2 version of this saw. Are you still happy with this machine? Have you done any resawing of 12" wide hardwoods? I have seen quite a few purchasers complaining about excessive vibration, is your machine resting on the mobile base or bolted to it? Great video, your tension reminder sign is an excellent idea.

    How do you know what blade tension level to set this blade to? You mentioned the exact number. I have a 17' model from grizzly but it does not specify tension level and i just installed 1inch timber wolf blade. I have too much of blade flap and it's pretty tight on the wheels. Thanks

  • @donvjgr

    @donvjgr

    +Arek Kosinski Arek, Sorry I missed your question. The method I used was a method I saw in Fine woodworking magazine online. As I recall the video was oddly enough named "Setting Bandsaw Blade Tension". The method is based on using a dial indicator. As the blade is tightened, the dial indicator will show stretch, and the article shows the different calculations to show how much for different sized blades. I made a cheap and dirty little jig to allow me to clamp my dial indicator onto the blade, and another block to measure too. It's way more elaborate than you probably would ever need, but I am an engineer by nature, and like to understand these things. I just marked the position on the tension indicator on the band saw for future reference for each blade I use so I have only done this a couple of times. Hope that helps.

    +MachEightFive Mark Thanks. The saw is still one of the most used pieces of equipment in my shop. It has not disappointed me. Dust collection is a struggle but I think that is the nature of any band saw by design. Never had any issues with the motor break. All in all I am still very pleased with it.

    Don, bought the machine with motor brake a couple of months ago. I appreciate your review, it helped considerably with my decision, especially when weighing the motor brake option. Worked great right from assembly. Put a Lennox Woodmaster carbide on it. The only unfortunate mishap was the freight driver did not strap the crate down and it fell on its side in transit. I refused the shipment. Grizzly customer support is outstanding! Completely understood my refusal, apologized and promptly shipped a replacement. Couldn't be more pleased with the machine. Thanks for taking the time to post!

    Hi Will, No I have not really. I have run one a couple times. I don't recall anything that was notable. But it did bring me to the conclusion I wanted a larger band saw. Powermatics have a great reputation. On heavy resawing the thrust bearings on my Grizzly get pretty noisy sometimes. I believe that is not uncommon with band saws with that bearing setup in general. Setup and tuning your band saw is key. All I can say is the Grizzly is typically quiet, and relatively vibration free. I can say that I have had to resquare the front fence rail mount several times. Mostly because I can be clod loading wood. Not much help I know. Don

    Trying to make a decision between the GO513X2BF or the one you have demonstrated GO5142XB or the Rikon 10-353 . I really need a 14" resaw capability.I need to have 14" stock for one piece electric guitar body's I have excluded the possibility of the GO817 do to the fact there are no reviews or videos on that Saw and I'm not sure of the 2hp motor for 14" resaw. I am thinking on the regret I may have with he other models that have the 14" resaw capability but only have the 13" or so cut at throat... it's a battle of compromise. It Must have a Footbrake and micro switch!!! Any advise?

    I have this saw and I like it. It cuts straight. With the supplied fence attached I get a lot of vibration, when the fence is removed the vibration stops. I've wondered if I did something wrong during installation. If anyone else has had this issue please clue me in for a fix. The only 'remedy' I have found is placing support sticks under the table to stabilize it. Ugh.

    I have this saw, was really disappointed for a few years. I had tried different blades all from grizzly, disassembled the saw and re-set to coplanar. It was a vibration issue and a rough cut. It was the blades, I ordered some from bandsawbladesdirect and that solved 90% of the issue. Went with a tri-master carbide blade.
