Ep 177: Stalk and Barrel Canadian Single Malt Review and Tasting with Deanston 12 / Cardhu 12 Cameo

Today we do a review and tasting of Stalk and Barrel Canadian Single Malt whiskey and Rex pulls a double mooch of Deanston 12 and Cardhu 12!
Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

I have been watching your videos for several months now, but haven't made a comment yet, and I think my mooch story of being a viking sailor is fitting as a first comment, so here goes: I am a member of the guild for the danish viking ship "The Sea Stallion" (largest reconstruction of a viking ship in the world), and on our summer voyage this year, we visited a harbor on the isle of Møn, where there was a small bar specialising in selling Whisky and rum. The owner, being an avid sailor himself, was so amazed at seeing our ship and crew that he contacted our captain, and invited all 60 of us to a free glass of whiskey or rum. I love smokey whisky, so I went up and asked for an Islay whisky, and to my amazement I was poured a glass of Bruichladdich '91. Sitting with my crewmates and drinking incredible (mooched) whisky was a moment of pure joy!

Easily one of the coolest stories I've read on this channel's comment section. Sailing a Viking ship to the Isle of Man? The only way this story gets better is if they are on the bow holding the reigns of a team of killer whales in one hand and holding a flaming sword in the other. Well played sir.

Well thank you, although it is Møn (Isle in Denmark) and not Isle of Man :) But in 2007 The Sea Stallion sailed from Denmark across the north sea, and all the way to Dublin (and back again the year after).

Daniel, one of the things myself and all new firefighters were taught about in academy was nose "fatigue" as you call it. As far as smelling gas goes your nose will go mute within 3-7 minutes(depending on the person) no matter how strong the odor. A trick we were told was to reach our noses inside our gear to smell our own "stench" and get sort of a reset. I imagine this is the same idea as yours is so theres probably something to it as far as whiskey goes. Cheers!

Here you go: A guy walks into a restaurant and approaches the hostess. She asks, "Do you have reservations?" He replies with, "Sure, but I'm going to try the food anyway."

i recently had an interesting mooch experience, while visiting family i learned my cousins boyfriend was a scotch drinker. so naturally i talked whisky with him until i got some. and in doing so i had two firsts for myself. Macallan 12 and Talisker Storm. Talisker was actually my first experience of smoke, and i was surprised to find myself going back for it over the Macallan, being that the majority of what i drink now is smooth and Friendly.

(You bastards) Also after viewing your videos i must officially recognize Daniel as a GRAND MASTER MOOCH. I recall in a previous video that Rex admitted to giving you a bottle. No self respecting master mooch would do that. Every one knows that, that level of submission would only happen if the recipient were a much higher level mooch. Therefor, Daniel as a result of Master Mooch Rex submitting to you via whiskey gift. You are a Grand Master Mooch sir.

Is it a bit too much to ask for you fine gentlemen to do a blind taste test? My whisk(e)y knowledge is really confined to mostly everything you guys talk about, and I know that sometimes you prefer the cheaper alternatives (Jack Daniels video for example). But I just wanna see what'll happen if you either of you guys do a video showing what you honestly think about any bottle of whisk(e)y without any prior research or knowledge about what you're drinking. It can even be another frankenwhisk(e)y kind of video kind of like what happened with your blendageddon. Thank you so much for being a gateway to whisk(e)y appreciation!

  • @WhiskeyVault

    @WhiskeyVault

    7 жыл бұрын

Between those, you'll get smoother dark notes on the caskmates and lighter more sparkly notes on the harmony. With Hibiki, look for almost white wine style notes of orange and honey. With Caskmates look for more smooth and vanilla notes mixed with light chocolate as well as the shortbread cookie common in Irish whiskey. Enjoy the journey!

Curse you whisky vault!! I was content to drink my bourbons for 30-40 bucks a bottle, but I went to my local purveyor of fine spirits to finally lay down the cash for lagavulin 16, but they were out of stock temporarily so I picked up a bottle of laphroaig 10....... and GOOD LORD ABOVE!!! I am going to die penniless, happy, but penniless.
