Ep# 17 | WTF is Gaming in India? | Career, Investment, Entrepreneurship
Data suggest that young folks under the age of 30 are spending a lot more time on social media and gaming and less time on TV and physical sports. In this episode, we have the CEO of Nazara Technologies,Krafton India, and Lila Games, leaders in the Indian gaming space. We also have Animesh Agarwal (8bit Thug), a protagonist of the Indian gaming Industry, turning gaming into a full-time career in India.
Given that gaming for young kids, today is what cricket was for Indians back in the day, we explore how one can prepare to become a part of the gaming industry: By either becoming a gamer, understanding specific skills needed and channels of monetization or by developing and publishing games, knowing how hiring in the gaming industry works and so on. In both of these cases, what remains common is specific skills and knowledge
Given that the industry is still in its nascent stages in India, we compare and contrast the climate of the gaming industry across geographies, break down what physiological aspects and latent human desires which make certain games tick. It could be chasing emotions, status, or making progress along with the opportunities that we are primed to capitalize on based on the current landscape of the gaming industry.

Joseph Kim is on different level in terms of market understanding and how effortlessly he is translating that info into simple words. Wow what a legend. Major missed info from him on this pod is what kind of games work in India.

I am pretty sure Joseph felt like it was not worth joining this discussion panel. Even when Nassir (Nasdaily) was a part of this podcast, one could easily observe the level of in depth knowledge, intellect and excellence in communication he had over other content creators. Same with other international individuals ( Including NRIs working in US ). And I think the flaw lies in our culture and education system, and I don't know how that's going to change, but if any core nationlist sees this, it is an initiative worth taking.
So very well spoken by Thug ❤ handled the tricky questions like a boss !! 🎉 thanks for representing us always ❤ thug 🚀

I gotta say Nikhil is an amazing person. Wonderful, humble, generous, and super charismatic. I (Joseph Kim- writing from my Gamedev YT channel) was and am super humbled to have been invited to such a great show. Just skimming through some of the comments here, I can see Nikhil has a really supportive community, and OMG Thug must be doing something really right to have such a huge and committed audience. Anyway, for some of you who wrote nice things about me... thank you guys. I'm used to doing super niche content for tiny audiences so it's cool to see so many people interested in gaming/gamedev content here.

The podcast appeared to be heavily focused on mobile gaming, neglecting the broader gaming landscape in India. While mobile gaming may have a larger audience, it should not be the sole focus here when discussing the gaming industry in the country. Some people including me or I should say those with extensive gaming experience, may have anticipated a more comprehensive exploration of the true essence of gaming, which was lacking in the podcast. And I respectfully disagree with your point here ,Nikhil, did not even delve into the perspectives and experiences of dedicated gamers or the deeper significance of gaming. However, it is worth noting that the guest speakers, especially Kim, provided valuable insights into the Indian gaming community that even Indian gaming community may not have been aware of. Their knowledge and intellect deserves nothing but admiration and respect.
Damn this podcast goes so deep when they start talking about psychology of battle royale games
Being a gamer from my childhood - cant really relate to any game discussed in this episode - this is completely mobile oriented which makes sense in india

If you are a real gamer(not mobile) then I feel like we are born in the wrong country. Mobile gaming has picked up in India because we are poor and cannot afford to pay for a PC/console or games. F2p android games are played by the youth who don't earn or earn little money. And if you are smart enough, you will realize because the income inequality is increasing, those poor people will never do well enough to ever transition into fully paid PC/ console gamers. India seems forever be doomed to be a f2p mobile gaming nation with poor RPU.
I invested in Nazara technologies in October 23 listening the news that Nikhil has invested in it. It has fell big 28% until now. So, just for the comment reader’s here please don’t invest blindly without doing any research of your own, like the mistake i made here.

You've certainly made a mistake that a rookie makes. But it is stupid to blame Nikhil over it because the guy didn't fake. He is still invested in it. He has a strategy and you don't. That is the problem.

Can relate to Mr Nitish. My niece (11 yrs old) and nephew ( 6 yrs) are so into Minecraft and Technogamerz. Also they like to watch their favourite streamers playing games. I think this is a substantial shift into the likes of today's younger generation compared to us millennials or even gen z.
Inviting gaming influencers to provide feedback before launch is an amazing that can be used across other categories too 👏👏
One of the best conversations.
After moving to US from India working in Tech, I noticed lot of small things & reason why we lack such expertise. In china if you see the education system teach lot of low level stuff like working with Kernel, Embedded basically systems programming. Whereas in India you want to go learn next big thing which is problematic cause you haven’t understand basics and you start working on abstraction & fancy things. This is the main problem, which translates to skill set, bubble up & it leads to not having kind of expertise industry expects. Translating to us not being able to produce quality software.
To the point where Thug was saying that the world is moving towards shorts/reels culture, there's a seperate fanbase for podcasts these days, everyone's coming up with long durations of detailed podcasts of upto 2 to 3 hrs that clock pretty good views
Nikhil has done good homework on research he was asking on point question .... good thing to see that a person from financial field is here to know something about our gaming industry ... and respect for @8bitThug that how he answered the questions so cleaverly .
Joseph was literally monster in this podcast and I give a big thanks to joseph to share this knowledge ❤❤ love u Joseph
very amazing podcast. it was full of knowledge for gamers and game developers even for animators i would say and as a game developer i really gained some knowledge through this podcast. Thankyou All guys.
With no disrespect , the depth at which Joseph speaks, showcases the difference in intellect. Every hindsight he provides, is backed with accurate data and a strong explanation. If India could produce such intellects, be it any industry, we would be prospering at a rapid growth. Foundation plays a key role in developing a long term vision.
Highly insightful discussion💡. There is one area everyone kinda missed talking about. Will share later in the eve once I'm back...
Great podcast . S8UL FTW
Exciting times for Indian gaming indeed! Huge congrats to Nazara for the listing! 🎮 However, as a first-time visitor to their website, I can't help but feel it's a bit underwhelming. A sleek upgrade could really elevate the experience and match the industry's exciting growth!

Joseph Kim made a perceptive observation; it's true that India is struggling to produce skilled talent and is plagued by mediocrity. I've noticed that many of my friends chase after substantial salaries rather than pursuing their passion for their craft, which is quite disheartening.

The point with Nikhil is that he is pinpoint accurate, he is not shy of asking the real facts "Is the money going to South Korea?"
Such a good questioning by Nikhil
Depends on the school is the biggest flaw and root of the problem in india. For the same amount of skill, a person can get paid 5 lakhs as well as 50 lakhs, this huge disparity is what leads to talent going outside india.
Like me lot of other people are also asking for “WTF IS MANUFACTURING”
A lot of people might not know Especially those who are not into gaming If you compare gaming with cricket in cricket if you are playing ranji trophy or and other similar event that's when you are getting paid it takes hardly 4 years for a 14 or 15 year old cricketer to play ranji or any other league and get paid a great price BUT while in gaming no one gives around 4 years if they don't get anything back which is okay and brings the bread in the house people in gaming want early succes and apart from that ranji player get payed a lot compared to an average esports player at that level and also in cricket if someone performs there is a probability that he will become famous but in gaming if u r not famous it's hard for you to earn money only 10 to 12 names will dominate here but then there will be lakhs waiting like one day it'll be our chance but it might not come so yeah the point of keeping a backup ready is really really correct coz if u are successful and loved one day it takes not even a second for the audience to bring you down and if u don't have audience u don't have money....

I cannot believe that today's age has made possible to record and share such information. Nikhil has been a great equalizer
The real appeal of Ludo is its social aspect. People gather around one mobile device, making it more about relationships than the game itself. However, monetisation is challenging because players often play offline to avoid ads. In India, where people often gamble based on the game. Players can sometimes predict the game's randomness, leading to bets placed outside the game. This insight might help bring monetisation into the game.
Very informative ❤ thankyou nikhil for all these informations
