(Ep 14) Our First Boat Trip Gone Wrong PART 1: 2024 Regal 38 XO

Episode 14
Our First Boat Trip Gone Wrong: 2024 Regal 38 XO
We set off on a month long adventure to answer a simple question, is the Regal 38XO going to be a perfect fit for our future family trips? While we purchased this boat more as a weekender and the occasional two week trips, we decided to take the plunge and packed the boat for a 30 day adventure departing Baltimore, Maryland and heading up to New Port, Rhode Island. We had planned for stops in Cape May, New Jersey; Atlantic City, New York City, and Block Island. We traveled down the Chesapeake Bay, under the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the Elk River and through the C&D Canal to the Delaware Bay. We spent a few days in Cape May before the weather took a turn for the worse. We did continue north as the forecast called for much warmer and calmer days ahead. Wacth our video to see just how far north we got before deciding to turn around due to not only poor weather conditions, but also due to some mechabical issues that needed to be addressed. In this two part series, we answer the question of wherher the Regal 38 XO is the ideal boat for us. We share with you the mechanical issues we had and how those were resolved as well as our insight in to the comfort level of the Regal 38XO as a home away from home while at dock and at sea. #Regal38XO #Baltimore #CapeMay #RegalBoats #BoatTravel #LiveAboard #Regal50SAV #Regal38SAV #Regal26XO #MarineWeather #Regal42XO

I am a new viewer to your channel and I'm really enjoying it. I must say I love your boat and have so enjoyed the journey to your getting it. For me the addition of your precious pups is the main draw. They are precious. Please, if your don't mind; could you please tell me the breed of your precious baby's and their names. Thank you so much, from a very grateful 77 yr old great grandma.

Thanks so much for watching the channel and your support! Charlotte and Charley are both Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and are eight years old! Charlotte is actually eight months older than Charley and they are not from the same breeder. We had two Cavaliers prior to Charlotte and Charley. Their names were Maverick and Goose, we got Charlotte when Maverick was 10 years old and Goose was 6. Goose passed away at the age of 9 and Maverick was 13. We decided to adopt Charley from a rescue group as he was only 4 years old, the same age as Charlotte. We wanted her to have a brother as we knew she was hurting from losing her big brother Goose and knew Mavericks time to cross the rainbow bridge was near too.

Nice video, thanks for sharing. Interesting to hear about the pluses and minuses of Dometic A/A units. Surprising their user interface was not planned well. Your one-day run from Baltimore to Cape May shows how wonderful it is to be able to run at 30 knots -- it would have taken two very long days for a 10-knot boat. A comparison of your 38-foot Regal to a 39-foot Back Cove 390 would be informative.

Hey John! Thanks so much for the support and watching the channel. Yep I agree regarding Dometic, but it is also nice to see a company step up when they know they don't have things right. Reference the comparison of the 38XO and the Back Cove 390, well the Back Cover is a significantly larger boat, looking at their specs the Back Cove is almost 4 feel longer than the 38XO which is a lot. But my overall impression of the Back Cove is one of form over function, keeping with the downeastern type boat. There seems to be a lot of sacrifices for the design over the creature comforts. In Regals case they seems to put function.... well they seem to prioritize function. I would recommend watching my 38XO walkthrough .. and I think you will see what I mean: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mp2nmJWydbyrh9I.html

My 2018 Regal HVAC system has failed twice in the last two years. My 2000 Doral Cruiser HVAC system never had a problem during the 15 years I owned it. With HVAC boat tech availability in increasing short supply, reliability and service is critical for the boating community!

Since Regal does not make AC systems, it is probably just a coincidence and since there is a two year difference between your Regal and Doral the systems could have been upgraded. Every year AC manufactures are coming out with newer and newer systems, that are more efficient. The systems we have in our boat was the first 5 Dometic installed on boats, so hence the issues. That said they are the best running AC units I have dealt with ever........ this includes our duel 12 ton chiller systems on Bravo.

There was an 18 year difference between my Doral and 2018 Regal. Certainly Regal outsourced many systems to other companies. My point is, as you experienced in your video, the newer Dometic HVAC systems, are not particularly reliable. If you were to review the Regal 28 Express FB group the HVAC system has been very problematic. With all of the new technology, modern boat HVAC systems should be reliable. My boating experience is since 1999. You deserve much credit for bringing this problem to the boating public. Please consider that many/most cruisers cannot afford to purchase large new boat like you. I am enjoying your videos. Thanks and safe boating!

my rule is 10 failures and then sell/trade out of the brand... been through 4 boats (regal, formula, pursuit, etc). All these luxury cruisers are just not great build quality. Or poor component selection/quality.

Thanks so much for your comments and your support of the channel. I don't have any hard and fast rule as a lot of these issues are component issues. Having owned very large vessels like Bravo, I can attest to the fact they all have the same issues... just more expensive to fix.. and more of them.

Dogs do not make decent pets on a boat. My experience is that their barking and mess seem to ruin the peaceful boating experience for most cruisers. In my particular experience, I resigned from my boating squadron for this very reason. Too bad some cruisers can make other cruisers cruise so miserable. Otherwise, your videos are interesting. As an owner of two smaller Regal cruisers, your ability to switch to several different boats in a short amount of time is unique! Have fun!

Wow Bob.. not sure where to go with this one. We got into boating so we could take out puppies with us, and as more and more people do the exact same thing I guess your boating destinations will become very small. At our home port literally every boat has a dog. We have never had any bad experiences with other boaters with our dogs nor have we had with other peoples pets, in fact we have had marinas call us and ask us when we were coming back with the puppies because they miss them.

@@flyinjeeper90 Yep.. it makes a lot of difference hence why we decided to go with the 38XO, we love the speed. Thanks so much for your comments.. correct, we maintained our speed, the 38XO runs best at 30 knots, below that you start to squat which would have started to significantly decrease my forward visibility and decrease my maneuverability. In addition having hit logs (submerged) in the 38XO before, it is best to hit them running as they will bounce off the bottom of the keel toward the stern rather than taking them blunt force on with the bow. Thanks again for the comments and the support watching the channel.
