From 100 to 26

From 100 to 26

After years of boating and through multiple refit projects from a 39’ boat all the way up to an 80’, we finally bought our dream boat: a 100’ expedition yacht named Bravo! We survived the refit for Bravo, lived onboard for several years, crewed her with plans to travel the world… then Covid hit!

We spent three years traveling up and down the eastern seaboard of the United States, and decided to sell Bravo for a brand new 80’ yacht. But then, we changed our minds and bought a 26’ boat to “get back to the simplicity of boating!”

Follow us to see how that decision worked out for us.

    I totally agree. Boats that aren’t used are usually boats that have the most problems. We actually don’t have the gas generator, we have the very reliable Fisher Panda diesel generators, Regal switched to them or made them an option several years ago. What I failed to mention in the video was that it was just a loose connection. We’ve put 100 hours on it now with no other problems. Thanks again for watching the channel and your support, it really means a lot to us.

    Enjoyed the video. You mentioned you were experiencing a slight generator problem -- did the tech figure out what was causing it and fix it? The Regal seems to have better-than-average access to components. St. Michael's is a lovely port and town. Bought a Panama hat there that I've worn for years. The maritime museum fascinating.

    I have a Regal as well and they seem to always put important parts in places that make no sense at all. Almost as if they put it in a place that’s convenient for them and let the customer figure it out. I also wish they would be more detailed with the parts of the boat you don’t see. With that said, great video!

Charlotte is actually eight months older than Charley and they are not from the same breeder. We had two Cavaliers prior to Charlotte and Charley. Their names were Maverick and Goose, we got Charlotte when Maverick was 10 years old and Goose was 6. Goose passed away at the age of 9 and Maverick was 13. We decided to adopt Charley from a rescue group as he was only 4 years old, the same age as Charlotte. We wanted her to have a brother as we knew she was hurting from losing her big brother Goose and knew Mavericks time to cross the rainbow bridge was near too.

    My 2018 Regal HVAC system has failed twice in the last two years. My 2000 Doral Cruiser HVAC system never had a problem during the 15 years I owned it. With HVAC boat tech availability in increasing short supply, reliability and service is critical for the boating community!

  • @From100to26
    @From100to26Ай бұрын

    Since Regal does not make AC systems, it is probably just a coincidence and since there is a two year difference between your Regal and Doral the systems could have been upgraded. Every year AC manufactures are coming out with newer and newer systems, that are more efficient. The systems we have in our boat was the first 5 Dometic installed on boats, so hence the issues. That said they are the best running AC units I have dealt with ever........ this includes our duel 12 ton chiller systems on Bravo.

  • @bobcathey8903

    There was an 18 year difference between my Doral and 2018 Regal. Certainly Regal outsourced many systems to other companies. My point is, as you experienced in your video, the newer Dometic HVAC systems, are not particularly reliable. If you were to review the Regal 28 Express FB group the HVAC system has been very problematic. With all of the new technology, modern boat HVAC systems should be reliable. My boating experience is since 1999. You deserve much credit for bringing this problem to the boating public. Please consider that many/most cruisers cannot afford to purchase large new boat like you. I am enjoying your videos. Thanks and safe boating!

    Dogs do not make decent pets on a boat. My experience is that their barking and mess seem to ruin the peaceful boating experience for most cruisers. In my particular experience, I resigned from my boating squadron for this very reason. Too bad some cruisers can make other cruisers cruise so miserable. Otherwise, your videos are interesting. Nice video, thanks for sharing. Interesting to hear about the pluses and minuses of Dometic A/A units. Surprising their user interface was not planned well. Your one-day run from Baltimore to Cape May shows how wonderful it is to be able to run at 30 knots -- it would have taken two very long days for a 10-knot boat. A comparison of your 38-foot Regal to a 39-foot Back Cove 390 would be informative.

  • @From100to26
    @From100to26Ай бұрын

    Hey John! Thanks so much for the support and watching the channel. Yep I agree regarding Dometic, but it is also nice to see a company step up when they know they don't have things right. Reference the comparison of the 38XO and the Back Cove 390, well the Back Cover is a significantly larger boat, looking at their specs the Back Cove is almost 4 feel longer than the 38XO which is a lot. But my overall impression of the Back Cove is one of form over function, keeping with the downeastern type boat. There seems to be a lot of sacrifices for the design over the creature comforts. In Regals case they seems to put function.... well they seem to prioritize function. I would recommend watching my 38XO walkthrough .. and I think you will see what I mean: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mp2nmJWydbyrh9I.html

There's a few waterfront restaurants, beverages on me to for providing great content.

    @@paulkunze9310 Hey Paul! We love the 36 and the 38... I think it will come down to do you really want the additional space that the 38 has or do you really want that bow seating area on the 36. We planned to come up there however the weather has just been terrible this month!! Thanks again for all the support and the comments.

    Outstanding real world review. Not gonna argue the pros or cons of bottom paint on a cruiser but after several seasons of reapplication of bottom paint you will definitely lose several mph due to the irregular bottom surface because no marina can ever get the bottom back to factory new condition before adding the recoats. On a go fast vessel you can easily lose 5-8 mph. Looking forward to watching other videos.

    Thanks so much Chris for your comments and watching the channel. After talking to some of the industry coating professionals, since we have semi-ablative paint on our boat (as most boaters do) and the speeds we travel combined with the amount of running we do each year, we will remove a significant part of our bottom paint every year. That said talking to the professionals, we should not see any degradation of speed year after year. That is also the results I have see over the 15+ years of doing this. If you are losing 5-8 mph... someone is doing something wrong....

    Go fast to cruisers - as you said, totally different. Every go-fast I've ever seen is either trailered or on a lift. In fact, it's downright upsetting to see a go-fast with a bottom job. Get that beast outta the water! Lol

    @@stratolestele7611 Ummmm... can't say I agree with you. We have not see any performance penalty, in fact a friend of ours had a 38XO without paint and we cruise at the exact same speed. It also depends on how often you use your boat. On our 100 footer we ran the boat about 1000 hours per year. Right now we are 5 weeks in on the 38XO and have 65 hours and counting, so we tend not to get any growth on the bottom, which helps a lot.

    I am still following your posts and find them very informative. I couldn't agree more that allowing all parties involved in the sale, production and providing sub-systems for the boat to identify and rectify any issues is exactly the correct position to take. As far as you A/C is concerned have you ever looked at the Mabru 12 Volt systems. Since many of the issues you are experiencing deal with trying to make the 110v system more efficient the Mabru may off some real tangible benefits. Just a thought. Keep the videos coming I love them.

    Hey Len! Thanks again for the support and your comments. We totally could look at the Mabru 12 volt system.. but then again, we would have to purchase those... and wire 12V wiring to those system... and put in breakers in the 12V panel... and Regal would no longer support the entire system. So sometimes when you build a boat you are at the mercy of the manufactures....and can't dictate certain equipment. From the manufactures point of view I get it as well because value is in quantity purchased.

    Thanks for watching the channel and the support. This is called the Palm Beach enclosure by Regal. On all of our previous boats that had an aft cockpit, we always had these type of enclosures made. Not to run with them on of course, but to keep them on for storage for security, privacy, you protect the aft cockpit area and substantially reduce the temperature in the cabin. Regal used a track to secure the enclosure to the top, and they meant for you to unzip each section and leave the upper part that slides through the track there... all the time. We unscrewed the 3 small screws holding that in place and presto.. we can now slide the entire assembly off the boat in about 2 minutes after you unsnap all of the snaps at the bottom.

As indicated in the video this boat was not fully PDI’ed by our dealer and the purpose was to walk people through all the issues that are associated with new boat builds. Reference the Pursuit comment, having built two boats at the same level as a pursuit (might even be considered better) and having both of those boats purchased back by the factory due to massive quality issues, in my opinion there is not one boat manufacture that is better than another. In addition since Pursuit does not offer anything close to the 38XO platform it is a rather moot point.

    @@tlteal The title of the channel is “From 100 to 26” … that seems pretty self explanatory. If you watched the series from the beginning, then you’d know what the channel is about. But if you haven’t, then the channel is about owning a 100’ expedition yacht and getting back to “boating” by going back down to a small 26’ Regal. We quickly learned that a 26’ pocket cruiser didn’t work for us. We then built a new boat and spent the last few episodes taking the viewer through the building process of the 38’ boat including all the upgrades. Viewers have reached out to us asking to show the various 38’ Regals on the market and a few have reached out to us privately to discuss various Regal boats ranging from their smaller bow orders to all the way up to their most recently launched 50’ SAV. Our channel has a decent following of current Regal Boat owners and boat enthusiasts who are considering buying a Regal boat. We also have followers who know us personally and have asked us to document our journey through boat ownership; hence why we initially started this channel. Our content is simple: intended to take people through the processes and experiences that we have gone through and are going experiencing. We will eventually be documenting our trips once the weather breaks for the season. If it doesn’t interest you, that’s okay. We aren’t trying to gain a million views or even 100,000 subscribers. We are here for the people who “get it”… and if that’s not you, well then, we get it.
