This episode was devastating for me. I feel like that was supposed to resemble a lynching. I don’t think it was a coincidence either. When Claudia said “this isn’t a trial, it’s a stoning.” It hit hard for me.

When Claudia said “Can I cry and say I’m sorry too?” after Lestat apologizes to Louis for hurting him, it made the whole episode feel way more uncomfortable. An almost entirely white audience and coven of vampires laughing at the pain of two black vampires, mocking their accents and painting them as more violent than their white counterparts… it adds a whole other layer of tragedy to the situation and it’s crazy that the writer and actors didn’t intend for that element

Especially with how much Louis had to repeat himself to Lestat, this kangaroo court is very much giving that “I don’t understand why you bring up racism while I dish out these horrific punishments in front of people who agree with me. Nothing ironic here!”

@@janicevignes2046 I don’t know if you were responding to me or someone else but I’ll respond either way. I didn’t say I was disturbed I said I was devastated. Having a new perspective and interpretation of the episode is what made watching it uncomfortable. My experience as a black gay man in the United States affords me the opportunity to see things a little differently than others even when enjoying entertainment. And while I was uncomfortable/devastated by the episode…it’s probably my favorite of the series. Lastly no I did not read Anne Rice books. I liked the way they had Madeleine clutched onto Claudia's waist and Claudia just protectively holding/cradling Madeleine while stroking Madeleine's hair, almost as if giving Claudia the elder / more motherly role and casting Madeleine as the younger / child, while they burned. First of all, it just made the whole thing simultaneously more beautiful and sweet as well as more heartwrenching. Second of all, it showcased the way that their relationship was rooted in more than their physical shells, which was the one thing Claudia always longed for-to not be bound to or limited by her physical body alone.

I'm pretty sure the vampires climbed the Eiffel Tower for no other purpose than to be theatrical divas. They knew they could send their signal to Lestat from anywhere (like Armand did in a previous episode) but they wanted to do it in the most public, high-risk (of being discovered by Armand) and absurd fashion they could think of because that is how they roll.

I definitely feel like show Armand is lying about how the trial went down. I think he used Santiago's play as a scapegoat so he could punish Lestat and sever his emotional tie to Louis permanently. The trial/play was designed to be Lestat's revenge but because he was so reluctant to stay on script during the trial and even said he was just as guilty as Louis and Claudia makes me think he is actually Armand's captive and not a willing participant. I honestly have no Idea how this show will transition into TVL and OAD because they've scrambled so much. If the events of QOD didn't happen in the 80's like the book, why would the show have such a huge gap between the initial interview in the 70's and the 2020's. What was everybody doing this whole time?

  • @MavenoftheEventide

The events of QOTD would only happen in the 2020s. Absolutely did not happen int he 80s, otherwise Daniel's research and the Talamasca files would have told him all about it already. The entire story has been bumped 50 years into the future, so NOTHING else that happens in the books after Louis's interview has happened yet other than what we've seen so far.

My theory is that Lestat was a willing participant up until a certain point (maybe until the coven planned to get rid of Louis) than he was forced by the coven with something (mind trick, coersion idk), and everything that he says while following the scrit is an altered version of the thruth (I think his perspective of Claudia's transformation is closer to the actual truth, but is still not it), an oversimplification (him not telling about the ones who must be kept and skipping straight to the Nola events) or a bold-faced lie (him saying Louis was calling to him while still human). When he gets off-script everyone in the coven gets worried he is taking this farse down, so... And from the teaser to the season finale, its shows Lestat is in a dungeon type room. It could be still Armand planning all this with a only show logic to explain next week or next season (circle of prayers to Season 3 announcement soon 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽)

What I don't understand is why Louis and Daniel both aren't questioning him or acknowledging just how responsible for all of this Armand really was. Only 2 episodes ago, he literally froze an entire restaurant of people while simultaneously putting the entire coven to sleep over a simple argument. Then, in the last episode, he once again froze an entire restaurant full of people so that the trio could be kidnapped without witnesses. There is absolutely no reason he could not have done the exact same thing here and got them all out of there, even if he had to keep everyone frozen while they all healed. He can't say that is was because Sam was blocking him, because he could have easily taken him out, and he also can't say Lestat was too powerful, because he threw him around like a rag doll the first time he confronted him, and then took Nicky. There is only one legitimate answer as to why he didn't do the same thing here, and we all know what that is. He wanted Louis all to himself, which also still doesn't make sense because he was already about to get that. Madeline and Claudia were already planning to leave and go live their own life together. Claudia was no longer an obstacle between him and Louis being alone together. So why allow her to be killed when he knew that all that would do is completely destroy Louis forever? The fact that Louis can't acknowledge this obvious truth is just baffling to me. Armand must have him under some insane levels of mind control. If I were in this situation and someone facilitated the murder of someone I viewed as my child, it wouldn't matter who they were to me or what defense they came up with, they would have met a very miserable end right along with the rest of the coven when I took my revenge. The fact Louis has not only stayed with Armand, but still calls him "the love of my life," and Daniel hasn't mentioned anything about this massive plot hole yet doesn't make any logical sense. It's not like Daniel to refrain from voicing his opinions, and there is absolutely no possible way this isn't one of them. The only reason I can come up with is that Louis just doesn't care about her at all. She was right she never really mattered to them. She was only ever a prop in Louis life to make him feel better about himself and once she was gone he didn't even care enough to hold the one person who was truly responsible, accountable for his inactions. This Louis kinda sucks as a vampire.

Sam Reid said to TvInsider: "The answer is yes,” Reid says. He was intentionally acting weird in specific moments to lay a foundation for what could come in a possible third season. “I was worried about the trial. Hopefully it’s one of those episodes that you can watch a couple of times and see there’s a few different layers to it.” He continues: “There’s a performance layer, there’s a memory layer, and then there’s bits where whoever’s remembering it, you’re like, well, why was he wobbling? Why couldn’t he stand up straight? He is injured, but is the injury physical or is it psychological? I think it’s more interesting, and Rolin probably thinks it’s more interesting too, that all of the major injury is psychological because when they’re so powerful, does it really take you 20 years to recover from a slit throat? So, it is more psychological damage, but [I was] always wanting to make sure there is a level that he is weak.” So I think we are still getting a version where Armand is pulling many strings. www.tvinsider.com/1140934/interview-with-the-vampire-season-2-episode-7-trial-claudia-dead/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaZyMkBPFVnoEsSfmBwbaNwlwHGB20ZtdEIir-nD5EllCklV0AA13EU054U_aem_Z2lxTPMPt6P6HhB9j8IIUg

I don't think they were talking about Louis threatening Lestat with being physically alone, more about Louis being cold and disconnected toward Lestat and/or threatening to break up with Lestat. That's completely different from just taking some time apart but knowing, barring death, you still have someone out there waiting for you who will come back to you sooner or later / who you will go back to sooner or later. 😊

Even when Lestat is making jokes, or being forced to say obviously false things on that stage, you can see the self-loathing/active sarcasm/weariness in his face. It's brilliant acting - like he's barely holding it together but feels compelled, by whatever motivation we do not have knowledge of yet, to continue playing his part as the consummate showman that he is. And the way Lestat is swaying on his feet, zoned out, head bowed during the final 'verdict' - I think if Armand 'couldn't prevent it' in any honest way at all (which is entirely doubtful as is, but work with me), he was using all of his power to keep Lestat in check or he wouldn't have struggled at all to control that audience whatsoever. Or, the entire last part of this trial that Armand takes over narrating is entirely incorrect. Because there's no way in hell he just stood there, unmoving when they dragged Louis away - much less just watching Claudia burn (the look of horror on his face said that in spades). Louis being curiously absent and Armand narrating makes it very, very... unreliable. Also, yeah, being trapped by SAM?? (No offense, but SAM?) - Also, I have a theory about Madeleine conveniently 'feeling' Louis love Claudia - I think that was potentially Armand, one way or another. Because this whole set up where they were snatchd up had to be premeditated, they had left town, so he had to deliberately lure them back somehow. Perhaps by implanting thoughts or feelings in Madeleine or even specifically in Louis for Madeleine to sense.

52:32 - I see Santiago's claims in the tv series that Lestat did not intend to harm Louis kind of a bit like a certain other character's claims in the books that Lestat must have known how they would actually love being a vampire and that's why Lestat forced being made into a vampire on them even whilst Lestat insists that he genuinely had no idea and yet still just did it anyway. And Lestat's reaction / offense at it / objection to it and passionate plea for forgiveness I think supports that theory. I saw this scene very much as Lestat owning that Santiago was downplaying his malice toward Louis in that particular moment and that in Lestat's own way Lestat actually did in fact fully intend to give Louis equally as much hurt as Louis gave Lestat in that fight-but Lestat regretted it / recognized that he was the older more powerful one and should have been a bigger better man than he was. ("The wolf rewarded/applauded for biting a pup" - or however it was that Lestat phrased it exactly, under his breath, while the frenzied crowd was essentially rabidly pardoning him and condemning Louis at Santiago's behest.)

I love that all the changes to the stage show in ep 2 made from the book version of the event were changed to foreshadow the trial! Santiago using his hypnosis on Madeleine after showing it off in ep 2, his whole "they'd betray you in a wink" and winking at Louis in the audience, showing off all the tricks so we know they've been priming their audience for YEARS not to be suspicious of seeing realistic death every night. Ugh, so good. Personally, I think the coven WAS keeping Lestat captive, and I think Armand absolutely knew about it. He's gone just long enough for Sam and Santiago to set the whole thing up? Lestat is in the city and that's supposedly a surprise to him at the trial? He watched the trial from behind a baby gate and somehow he couldn't have prevented anything? I really like the theories I've seen that Armand is in on this and only pretending to be detached from culpability, the same way that he would stand in the balcony to watch the regular shows from a distance, acting like he's only just tolerating Santiago's antics. It would make FAR more sense to me that Armand was struggling to control the crowd because he was already controlling Lestat after the coven tricked him to returning to Paris. God I'm so curious what they'll do with the finale. I get the sense from Armand that he's kind of sanded off Louis's edges over the years. He doesn't even have the same accent in both timelines! His present-day accent sounds like he's imitating Armand. I don't think Armand is directly controlling him or anything, but I think he's done a lot of nudging or strategic memory erasing. How many altered memories does Louis have that he may not find because there's nobody to remind him of them like Daniel has? How many tiny edits or suggestions did Armand have to make before Louis would willingly take up residence in a Dubai high rise with a room entirely dedicated to the same kind of rocks he was buried in?

I know many want to see Marius de Romanus or even a glimpse at the silhouette of ‘Those Who Must Be Kept’. But do you have anyone, either vampire or Talamasca member, you ache to see on screen before we say goodbye to this season???? I know I’ve said this like a million times but thank you so much for uploading another excellent breakdown. Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed and we truly appreciate you, and what you do for the Vampire Chronicles community.

I don't feel like we can take anything Louis relayed about the fight at face value anymore, including the bits the show didn't specifically counter, ie the punching and jawbone drag. Lestat is SO physically messed up when they get into the bedroom, and Louis's original recounting is either going off his own fractured memories or viewing the incident through the filter of Claudia's angry journaling. Both of those perspectives would skew in favor of Louis. Then take that whole thing and filter it even farther through 70 years of Louis being angry with Lestat and believing Lestat came to see him killed.. of course his first retelling shows Lestat in the most monstrous light possible.

Even if Lestat offered amendments and rehearsed with them, he could have been forced or coerced into doing that. And even if they don't tell us this season that Lestat was forced into it, they could still tell us in a later season, much like how we got various pieces of it patched together across multiple books too. But we'll see.....maybe they'll save some reveals for later on, or maybe they won't. Either way, I am here for the ride! They have hinted that Santiago might secretly be more powerful than Armand, despite being the youngest in the Paris coven, because Santiago's maker made him in defiance of coven rules-but they could just as easily say that Armand was simply pretending to be less powerful and/or more helpless than he really was, too. I really like the way that the tv series seems to me to be leaning super much into the "they're all monsters, and they all have various bits n pieces of humanity too" angle-rather than really painting any one of them as particularly more or less monstrous or human than any other. 😊

There are two changes that really bother me, and they are both how the vampires react in sunlight and that they are able to move around in the day. Rice's vampires are distinctive in that they not only are seriously harmed by the sun, but they are unable to move about during the day *at all*. With the exception of *maybe* Maharet, they are completely comatose one the sun comes up. I wish the show had left it that way, but I supposed they didn't in interest of convenience, so that they could film during the day. There is one scene when Armand is talking to Louis in San Francisco and he's actively standing in a sun beam in front of a barely covered window. Fine, Assad looks hot in that lighting, but come on. I don't like it because the sun/daytime effects are serious impediments and in my opinion characters as powerful as Lestat and Armand need some sort of weakness, or they are simply too powerful and every issue could be solved by their insane powers. It makes plots and character motivations much weaker when everything can literally be solved by magic, no matter where or when.

So I have a theory that I'm not sure works or not, because I don't think the logistics hold up to scrutiny but we see Lestat watching Claudia burn up looking pained, then he is missing after, Santiago picks up the dress. Now I don't know if the stop time thing works on vampires and also he would also burn up in the sunlight, but I could definitely see, Lestat saves Claudia last second making Sam Reid sceptical at first. It's probably not that though, I probably just don't want Claudia to be dead for some reason.

Yeah as a reader i am in agreement with you about Lestat's character, but also I think the show is showing us something that maybe in the books we werent seeing...: that Lestat is an unrelaiable narrator too. So the fact that he didnt told us that magnus or his father were abusive in anyway, doesent mean they werent in the reality. And the fact that we see the ghosts being good doesent mean they were in fact good. So, what I want to say is that I think the show has capturet very good the main themes of anne rice: love, the unacceptance of ourselves, memory, fear of death, fear of life, the urelaiable narration, the limits of violence, morality, human vicious, control.....yeah, explaining all this a think they are doing very well

  • @MavenoftheEventide

    @MavenoftheEventide

    Ай бұрын

He's weakened and under duress because Louis and Claudia tried to kill him and left him in a dump. He's still recovering from all those injuries, both physical and emotional. That's all Sam Reid meant. In the book, he has lots of scars all over him, but since the show didn't do the scars, he had to show that weakness/injury in his mannerisms instead. He also said in that article that Lestat came to the trial willingly, because when the coven called him, and told him what they were going to do, he knew he couldn't NOT come and just let them kill Louis while he stayed away and did nothing. So he felt he had to come.
