Environmentally-friendly, sustainable weed burner: Draper 2000W electric weed burner review
Earlier this summer, we reviewed Go System's gas weed burner. The benefit of gas weed burners is that they offer you freedom to use it where you want to with higher burning temperatures. On the flip side, they use a fossil fuel base. So we were extremely excited to try out Draper's 2000W electric weed burner.
Regular followers of our blog (www.myhomefarm.co.uk) and KZread channel will know that we don't use petrol or diesel equipment, and we always try to opt for electric or battery-operated tools. What really appeals to us about this weed burner is that we can use it on sunny days and allow our solar PV system to completely offset its 2kWh electricity usage making it an environmentally-friendly solution for us.

you don't need to burn away the weed, just hold the burner over the weed for a second or two the leaves will turn glossy at that point the weed is dead, after a few days it will shrivel and dry out
Great video! 🔥 Thanks for the honest review 💙

Depends on how many weeds you have. For us, if the driveway gets really overgrown, it’s much faster to burn our way through them or we use our vinegar and salt solution to kill weeds on really hot days.
A very helpful video. A meter cord???? most weeds are taller than that. However, the glorified hair dryer explained it well. I see good possibilities with it, however. Thanks for posting.

I missed your comment almost a year ago 😬 We used the Sony ZV1: amzn.to/3Ctpdw0
Thanks I'll stick with my gas one then!
I love the idea about this product but I am really fearful that a smoldering plant can catch on fire and then spread. Any thoughts? And I did not know that vinegar and salt also kills weeds. Does it kill grassAs well?

You just have to be extra vigilant if you’ve got a lot of dry plants or grass around. Yes, the vinegar/salt solution kills grass too. Just do it on dry days with no rain forecast for at least 24 hours.

It will burn the grass. It’ll make a round, burnt circle.
as below, your aim is to thermal shock the weeds, then walk away, your not trying to toast your weeds. And beats breathing in chemicals just for the rain to wash them off the weeds the next day or two

Won't the roots just sprout new leaves?

It varies from weed to weed. Some do, others don't. Since making this video, we've changed our system. First, I use our homemade weedkiller: kzread.info-TQ2AOkEgqc Then I burn them.

@@MyHomeFarm Thanks. I keep hearing some people say the burner will heat up and kill the roots, but I just don't see the heat penetrating the earth to the root. And just killing the leaves seem.... weak, since the roots usually have enough energy stored up to sprout new leaves in a day or two. I've been experimenting with deep burns with the nozzle pretty much against the ground and burning the weed to a crisp to see if it will affect the roots, and doing a light shock as @rubberplantsandwich mentioned. With the second, I'm in constant doubt because I don't see anything really different and have to wait a day or two to see anything has changed in the appearance of the leaves. Only time will tell. If none of these produce any meaningful results, guess I'll have to send it back to Amazon. Back to chemicals.... sigh.

@@tomcha75 If you burn the leaves too much, then yes the plant "abandons" them and shoots new leaves. That is exactly why it is essential to not overcook, so to say... you heat it up just enough to damage the leaves so the root wastes so much water and energy on those damaged leaves that it depletes itself... and that is when the plant (not just the leaves) dies. It can take several days.
How much electricity did it use per x minute session?

As a rough guess, I'd say around 30 watts per second, 2kW per hour.

@@MyHomeFarm Power is independent of time as it is an instantaneous quantity. 2kW is 2kW regardless of if it is for a second or a century. Its energy use (power times time assuming power is constant; or the time integral of power iffen you want to be really pedantic) is 33 and a third Whr/min.
Try spraying 1L 5% White Vinegar and a tablespoon of salt, for the drive.

@@MyHomeFarm Yeh I just use a spray bottle when there's a few days of dry weather due. The weeds should turn brown and curl up at around three days in. Some will grow back but it's a quick harmless way to keep them down whilst you're pottering outside. I use Golden Swan Vinegar from Amazon.

I’ll definitely try it in the weeks ahead.
You should not block the air, it should be used from a distance
you're burning leaves, not killing plants. weed leaves needs to be heated not scorched.
Really??
an agonizing death for a weed
