Enthronement of Justin Welby, 105th Archbishop of Canterbury (Highlights) - (c) BBC 2013
(c) BBC 2013
On 21 March 2013 at Canterbury Cathedral, England, highlights of the enthronement.
At the Great West Door, a member of the congregation, Evangeline Kanagasooriam, said: "We greet you in the name of Christ. Who are you and why do you request entry?"
Justin: "I am Justin, a servant of Jesus Christ, and I come as one seeking the grace of God, to travel with you in his service together".
Jesus: "Take heart, it is I, do not be afraid".
Narrated by the BBC's Huw Edwards, a BAFTA award-winning Welsh journalist, presenter and newsreader.
A note about the Chair of St. Augustine (from Wikipedia):
"Named after the first Archbishop of Canterbury, St Augustine of Canterbury, the chair is made of Petworth Marble and dates to sometime between the sixth and twelfth centuries. Those who argue for an older date suggest that it may have been used to crown the kings of Kent. It has been in use since at least 1205. Canterbury Cathedral, in which the cathedra is housed, maintains that the chair was once part of the furnishings of the shrine of St Thomas Becket, which was destroyed during the English Reformation.
Since an early period, it has always had a place in the triple enthronement of an Archbishop of Canterbury. He is seated on the throne in the choir as Diocesan Bishop, in the chapter house as titular abbot, and in St. Augustine's chair as Primate of All England. This is the only occasion in which this cathedra is used. A second one is used for other occasions in which the archbishop is present".
My apologies for the poor video quality and editing of these highlights, courtesy of the BBC - alas, my modest editing software isn't up to processing lengthy video (as opposed to slideshow) content.

It is dismaying to read the deeply visceral hatred in many of the comments here - the more so because they are from people who call themselves Christians. Have some perspective: take heart, it is I, do not be afraid.

+AntPDC Wake up and take a cold shower. Saintliness is not dumbness. Welby is not a Christian and actively works with the Woolf Institute, a George Soros backed organization that claims Britain is no longer a Christian country. Aside from Welby's grubby links to Soros corporate funding, he is gross hypocrite - a Patron of the Woolf Institute which had commissioned a 'report' saying Britain is not longer a Christian country, yet when he was interviewed for the 'report' he acted as though he was an independent bystander. I don't trust Welby as far as I could throw a piano.

I'm Orthodox but I kind of agree with the flak this denomination gets. They marry gay people and care more about liberal progressive politics than Tradition of the Apostles. Episcopalianism in USA is almost dead and Anglican show up rate is abyssmal. Something 9%. A heavy price to pay for gay sex, women priests, Qur'an readings in churches, etc. etc.

>deeply visceral hatred >people who call themselves Christians. >Have some perspective: take heart, it is I, do not be afraid. Why do you think that people who have legitimate issues & criticisms with non-biblical and non-traditional behavior by Anglicanism and this Primate are "visceral" and ought to be characterized as "hatred"? There is no question that Anglicanism has changed and departed from many of the tenets it once held - shouldn't such change be questioned? Or is only orthodoxy to be questioned? I for one feel these departures are mistakes and are errors. My expression of same isn't "hatred" - or even "deeply visceral"; it is an intellectual statement as a result of questioning the wisdom of these acts and changes. Saying that something is wrong or that one thinks some change or position is an error, and expressing dismay at it is NOT the same thing as "hatred." Although, accusing us of "deeply visceral hatred" is a sure-fire way of dismissing us not taking our objections seriously, or honestly. Just because someone says "...it is I...", claiming to be Jesus, doesn't mean they are Jesus, or even speak in his name. Have some perspective: Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
As a Dutch (Reformed) Protestant, I congratulate the Anglican Communion and I wish the new Archbishop and the Church of England the blessing of our God almighty. May this Church be blessed and happy in Christ.

I'm no expert on this, but "The Anglican Journal"reports: "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is always invited to the enthronement of a new Archbishop of Canterbury. She does not attend, however, and instead sends a member of the Royal Family in her place. “She’s invited, but it’s really the Archbishop’s day,” explained the Dean of Canterbury Robert Willis, when asked why the Queen does not attend the historic event"". Hope this clears up any doubt.
Same here. Would love to watch the full video, if possible.
It's understandable that the Queen (as Sovereign and Defender of the Faith) doesn't attend enthronements because the focus would move away from the Archbishop to the Monarch, and thus become a distraction from proceedings which are essentially religious, not secular. As can be seen in this video, on this occasion the Queen was represented by the Prince of Wales, as heir to the throne. Best wishes.

Although the entire ceremony is currently available via BBC iPlayer, copyright and TV-licensing reasons prevent its being made available outside the UK. In this particular case, one wonders why the rules couldn't have been relaxed in recognition of the fact that this event was of deep interest to the worldwide Anglican Communion. Perhaps in future the BBC and the Anglican Church might agree on a more accessible approach to such content, judging by the interest expressed here. Warm wishes.

"He who is in communion with a heretic is himself one." --St. Cyril
While in my opinion, it is a pity that the Church of England is no longer in complete communion either with the Orthodox Church of Constantinople or with the See of Rome, I am happy to see that they continue the old customs and traditions found in the music and the liturgical celebrations in their churches and commend them for it; something that many have found rather lacking in the majority of Roman Catholic churches (particularly in North America), which seems to have forgotten so much of its rich heritage. I also hope that as the servant of Christ, the the Archbishop of Canterbury, along with those in communion with him will continue to commit themselves to the true service of the poorest of the poor and the oppressed throughout the world (including animals).

As I understand it, it is a bit of historical mummery. At the great west door of the cathedral, he is the Archbishop-elect, and is asking permission to enter, as a courtesy, and to perpetuate the idea (to the faithful) that the church by then had any freedom in the matter. The reality is that he is "elected" by the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury Cathedral by command of the Sovereign. King Henry VIII's Reformation made the Church of England an "established" church, bound up by law in the civil polity of the Realm, under the Crown. Happy for others more knowledgeable than I to inform this thread!

It's a part of a very old tradition.
Angels are rejoicing that finally our son has come home to guide His LORD'S flock. Lead only the Holy Spirit does ALWAYS as our beloved St John writes in the power of God John 6 :45. "They will all be taught by God"May we all believe that it was ,is and in Christ ALONE that we rise.
How can the term 'enthronement' apply to a Christian minister? Paul asked "Have begun ruling as kings before us?" 1 Cor 4:8. They sit on thrones, live in 'palaces,' have servants.,wear distinctive robes e.t.c. Where in the gospels is this justified?
Thank you Frasquito, and I heartily share your sentiments. At this Eastertide, I hope we all look beyond our respective traditions (or none) and reflect upon the simple truths: there is bad, and there is good, and the difference is readily plain for us all to see if we choose to look.
--and it wasn't intended to be a concert! The pastor where I'm organist proposed that the congregation remain seated while I play the postlude, then maybe they'd applaud (the way they did in seminary). I pooh poohed that idea, believing that there's a difference between a mass and a concert. If I wanted to concertize, I'd schedule a concert and maybe make some money taking it on the road!
In Christ there is no East or West, In Him no South or North; But one great fellowship of love Throughout the whole wide earth In Christ now meet both East and West, In Him meet North and South; All Christly souls are one in Him Throughout the whole wide earth. oh ... and there is also no condemnation for all who are in Christ .. What is the origin and purpose of a new bishop being questioned by a layperson?
@AntPDC
7 жыл бұрын
I believe it was ++ Welby's innovation. I rather like it. And I wouldn't myself use the word "layperson" in this context because it is suggestive of lofty Pharisaical pride. Here, Archbishop Justin is being questioned by a member of his flock as their shepherd. I'm pretty sure that Jesus Christ himself would approve.
@DannyEastVillage
7 жыл бұрын
As shepherd of the laity as well as to the clergy, a bishop is answerable to both. In the Orthodox churches, the laity are asked in the consecration ceremony to give the patriarch permission to proceed. One dissenting voice - whether from another bishop, a priest, or a layperson - can be enough to railroad the entire proceedings at least until an investigation is completed.
Why would the BBC "be very cross with" you?
My question in the midst of all these exchanges would be......why does the Christian Church find itself in this situation? If there was union, there would be no need to have to repair damage done with 'ecumenism'
In the context of an occasion such as this, not only do you disrespect your former church and the 80 million Christians who belong to it, but you embarrass the one you currently belong to by your absence of Christian fellowship and simple good manners. This is the year 2013: you might find it helpful to talk to your priest or bishop about the meaning of "ecumenism" and why it is eg that the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches actively strive to achieve it, despite obstacles. Best wishes.
Enthronement? I thought that was only for the Queen or King? They are above the Archbishop and are mentioned in the Anglican maas. That is how they say it. Like 14 hundred yaars. The Church of England is an adjunct of the state, since the reformation.
