Enshittification Explained: The real cost of 'Free' services online

Ғылым және технология

The term enshittification, or platform decay, was coined by journalist Cory Doctorow in a 2022 blog post to describe the lifestyle of any business or online platform that act as two-sided markets.
Let's look at what it is, why it happens and what (if anything) we can do about it.

    The entire world is enshitificating at fast pace. In 5 years I predict a pair of shoes would last a week at most. 2 weeks if you payed for your shoes premium subscription beforehand.

    It really is unfortunate to see how little you can do as one person, just to know the millions of other users either don't know or don't care, and continue to contribute to the problem. Strikes and boycotts don't really work like they used to...

    Well awareness does change things over time. Don't get frustrated because not everybody is already on board. Cheer up to be one of the first and use the chance to change your ways. Participating in and organising alternatives with like minded people does help as well. Just like having conversations like this. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

    I'm trying to write a video on the privacy paradox. It's what most people have - namely, they want privacy but the amount of effort it takes isn't worth it. But I can't think of a good thumbnail for it 😕 but I think if (one day) we have a big enough community here. We could make a difference. Maybe... 😀

    Completely agree! It's a marathon not a sprint. If it would shift overnight then it would have happened by now. And the issue is built on thousands of years of similar systems that only benefit a handful. 😀👌

    "Companies need to stop chasing forever growth" Yeah, good luck with asking companies to ignore the basic fundamental modus operandi of a market economy. That companies want to grow and want to do so forever and as fast as possible isn't some "wrong mindset" or ideological issue, it's a structural one. As long as they operate for profit, in capitalist system, on an even semi-free market, they will need to grow - or die. Why should you invest money in a company that doesn't promise growth, i.e. to return a profit? If your growth is stalling and you are NOT either changing this quickly or taking out your investments to invest into a different business that is still growing, your competition will steamroll you.

  • @simoncaine9515

    @simoncaine9515

    Sorry, maybe I misspoke. I think (assuming you're a for profit company) you want to grow. But promising forever growth is silly. There's only a certain number of customers for everything. And you reduce the number when you own the market and then charge too much. You male more on the customers that don't leave. But that's another issue. So grow, fast and get your bread. But when you're at a certain size, promising more growth is just not sustainable or viable. Sorry for the confusion. I agree with most of what you've said 😀

    I think that's his exact argument- that's the very problem. No one is saying they're given the choice not to- just that they chase it *at all,* which is just... fact even as you said it :p

    @@simoncaine9515 You have no idea how much i appreciate this, so many people are willing to talk all the crap in the world about corporations but the reality is a lot of them would be a lot less awful if the concept of investment, shareholding and wall street as a whole crumbled completely. Sure, there could still be stinkers, but the reality is you would very easily find a better place to be where you aren't simply going to be stomped all over. There's nowhere that won't stomp over you right now. There's nowhere that has the option.

  • @simoncaine9515

    @simoncaine9515

    @GoodGirlPeruru Agreed. I'm actually working on a video called "shareholders are the problem" on this exact topic. Because if a private company didn't have to seek forever growth for shareholders, they'd value their users and customers rather than chasing new ones / a monopoly
