Ensenada, Mexico, one of the first settlements in the Californias (US State and Mexican States of Baja California), has since emerged as a popular cruise ship destination and jump off point to Mexico’s wine region; Valle de Guadalupe, which we will visit in the next episode.
Ensenada is a laid-back coastal city that is famous for delicious seafood. It is also home to the original fish taco, and birthplace of the Margarita; Two reasons alone to take a tour of Ensenada!
After crossing the US/Mexico border at San Ysidro in San Diego to Tijuana on our first day, and taking our Baja Road Trip south, we stopped in Rosarito for breakfast and tacos. Then, Puerto Nuevo for lobster before arriving to our Airbnb in Ensenada last night.
Today, we set out to find the best things to do in Ensenada, and as per usual, it all begins with food.
There are several taco stands that lay claim to the original Baja-style fish taco, but general consensus grants Tacos Fénix the distinct honor of being first, with the same family still serving up this street treat since it opened in 1970.
The fish tacos here are delicious, and so are the shrimp tacos. They are all battered and fried right in front of you, and then you get to pick out your own toppings.
I highly recommend stopping at Tacos Fénix on your Ensenada tour for breakfast (or lunch).
Next, we took a walking tour of Ensenada and visited a popular church and the main downtown area. One recommendation that many of you had on Instagram as the best things to do in Ensenada was to visit Mercado Negro (Black Market), which is the local fish market here.
It was small and smelled like fish (obviously), but it was cool to see where our seafood was coming from.
From Mercado Negro, we continued our food tour of Ensenada to Sabinas Restaurant. Now, this place is actually famous because of a street cart that is usually parked outside called “La Guerrerense.” A Mexican food street cart that is famous for its seafood tostadas.
These Mexican tostadas were smothered with ceviche, avocados, homemade salsas, and both raw and cooked seafood. They are full of flavor and very original. I can see why Sabina has become so famous, and La Guerrerense is a must-visit while visiting Ensenada.
In the afternoon, we set out on a mission to discover the birthplace of the Margarita. In Ensenada, there are two bars that claim to be the original Margarita.
First, Bar Andaluz, at the Riviera Cultural Center in downtown Ensenada claims that a bartender here was given the task of creating a new signature cocktail by then owner Margarita King.
Second, Cantina Hussong’s claims that a bartender was creating new Tequila cocktails when the daughter of German Ambassador (Margarita) came in and tried the cocktail. She liked it and he named it after her.
Both very good stories, both very good margaritas!
If you’re looking for the best things to do in Ensenada, I highly recommend following our tour for the day!
Next up, we head to Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico’s wine region, before heading back north to Tecate and Mexicali!
Stay tuned!!

Gareth, not trying to pick on you, just be, if you have no proof don't say it, I enjoy your video's, I'm not a hater, just using constructive criticism take it or leave it, making the knives sharper, been in Tijuana for over 40 year, I'm ripe behind the ears, just say the best fish taco, that's based on opinion only, until they find a better one, which is all over the Mexican coast, don't say it was invented there, how the hell can you prove that?, the very first fish taco on planet earth?, that's impossible, you cant put a Patent on a fish taco, like American think burritos, Nachos or chimichangas are Mexican, its not, its Tex/Mex, your still a Little green behind the ears (that only natural) time will fix that, but you make some enjoyable videos, with more time you can clean up a little

@@derechosmexicanos2688 its not the birth place of the fish taco and Margarita, next time you go to Ensenada, maybe you can stop by and see the loch ness monster and Chupacabra, that Idea of the taco and Margarito from, created, and born, in Ensenada is a sells pitch, amazing how Americans hear something and just hit it like a fish hitting a lure, no evidence, no question, just go with it, becouse that's what I want to hear, the proper way would be "Ensenada has good fish tacos and Margaritas", not the fist fish taco and margarita on planet earth, that don't even make sense

It's Tacos Fenix. On a corner 1 block east of the creek and 2 blocks from the cathedral (big yellow church). La Guerrerense is in the thick of the central tourist area near the flag. Of course a famous food cart is Mariscos El Guero. But, you can find the cart near the Riviera Casino Museum called Mariscos La Dona. That's good and cheap. The mexcians say "if you don't eat standing, you are not mexicans" regarding street food.

Wow, we drove from Cabo San Lucas to Mexicali, but decided to go to San Felipe instead of Ensenada. We definitely have to go to Ensenada.

Fun and Festive! I love fish tacos! I've had them in Mexico although not in Ensenada .I think I could tell that you didn't like some of those sea food tacos .I don't like certain seafood and it's a texture thing .Good to have your friend along Tadeo. I also love a good Margarita .The 2nd one looked different yet strong like you said. Were you both a little drunk ?Thanks for bringing us along on another sweet adventure.

Both this and last week's show were incredible. I really like these episodes. You need to come to the Calexico / Mexicali border town and explore next time. Stay safe. Thanks for the fun. Great tour partner Tadeo as well. He really made this trip fun.
