This wasn't the full extent of what the explosion could have been. 400 tonnes of sand were packed around it first to make a controlled safe explosion. Even through all the sand nearby windows were smashed and some buildings were damaged

@@emp8653 I guess he wanted to paint a clear picture my grandmother remembers Germans lining up young men and boys in front of a church and shooting them in public this was in west Ukraine

Seeing that bomb explode can really help you feel what a civilian would see around 80 years ago when those were being dropped everywhere in the city

My grandpa told me stories where he was running "through" those explosions with big chunks of debris flying around him and his mother who had his little brother in his arm, trying to get to the bunker. And he was also just 5/6 years old. One time he was too late and the bunker doors were already closed, so he laid down next to a soldiers watching him shooting at the allied bombers. Unimaginable...

@@cr9321 yup, bombing on the city started when he was 1 and ended with the end of the war when he was 6. During that time there were 1300 alarms where his mother had to to the bunker with him and his siblings, 173 times the alarms ended in actual bombing attacks, ~850 thousand (!) fire bombs and ~50 thousand high explosive bombs were dropped on the city and 4000 people were killed.

I don't live far from the uni and the detonation shook the whole house. It makes you realise how loud and terrifying it really is

Luckily I was just outside the evacuation zone-- got front row seats of the whole thing. It was so cool to watch haha

I’m glad nobody was hurt and they did it safely,and since they did it safely. THAT EXPLOSION WAS KINDA COOL. I LOVE PYROTECHNICS 🧨. But of course safe ones😃😎

Just a few years ago, a guy in the U.S. was cleaning up an old artillery shell from the U.S. Civil War (1861 - 1865) using an electric grinder. Some guy with a metal detector dug it up in a field. It was filled with black powder and exploded, killing him, and shrapnel flew through the air for a few blocks. Even 160 later these old things can explode and kill.

There was one found in my hometown a few years ago. Fano, Italy.

I lived in the red and yellow building at the bottom right at 0:01 for 4 months back in 2016 as a University of Exeter exchange student. It's crazy to think this bomb was on the hillside so close by the entire time!

If you can get your hands on the PBS series 'Danger:UXB', I highly recommend. It is about the teams that defused these bombs in England (mostly takes place in London) during WWll.
