WW2 bomb explodes during attempt to defuse it - BBC News

The largest unexploded World War Two bomb ever found in Poland has detonated during an attempt to defuse it.
The RAF dropped the Tallboy or "earthquake" bomb in a raid in 1945 which sank the German cruiser Lützow.
The Polish Navy said there had been a 50:50 chance the bomb would explode and all the divers were unharmed.
The bomb was at the bottom of a Baltic Sea shipping canal, and about 750 residents near the port city of Swinoujscie were evacuated.

Title was poorly written, they attempted to defuse it, and they couldn't. Then they had a planned controlled explosion from afar, because you know, you can't leave that just laying there. Whoever wrote the title made it seems as it was during the failed attempt and an accident.

"An attempt to defuse it" is called deflagration. They've estimated that only 1 tonne out of 2.5 total wasn't deflagrated hence the explosion. This was a controlled action and the explosive charge used here has been detonated remotely. Please get your facts right rather than creating click bait nonsense.

@** As far as I know this was a Tallboy and you're right that the splash would've been bigger (about 160m instead of 100), but only 1 tonne of the explosive material exploded here. The scientist who were present on-site estimated that if the entire bomb would've been detonated it could've damaged the bridge nearby. So rather than going full Rambo on this, they've decided to deflagrate it to minimise that possibility as much as possible.

Most explosive compounds do oxidise over time and therefore lose their kick, however if it remains sealed it will mostly keep. No seal is 100% impermeable, but under the right conditions the leak is very minimal and if it's cold the oxidation will be minimal also. There is also the fact it's in the water, maybe it's a very slow moving river and has very little Oxygen, therefore no rust and no oxidation. It really depends on a lot of factors, but I would assume it lost some of its kick.

@Roman R Jesus wasn’t real, there’s literally no historical evidence and his gospels are all different telling of similar stories. He was an invention of the disciples hence why there’s such a disparity in the texts. They wrote them separately possibly even at a distance of a few decades and it was later in the 2 century when they were collated into the larger text and the Old Testament was added to help convert more Jews. I don’t know many scholars of theology that still seriously believe in Jesus the man.

Just thought of thousands of dead fish flooting to the surface due to the shock wave.

there was no one in the water. this was a planned detonation after specialists made it as safe as they could. Why believe a headline. the headline is clickbait

This is a very profound video. The last bomb of World War 2 going off. A war in which many lost their lives and untold suffering was inflicted upon mankind. The wheel of time turns and history repeats itself..more bombs will be deployed in coming wars. However this lonely bomb serves as a reminder. Our actions have consequences that may have a physical impact into far into the future. May all men and women, soldier and civilian who lost their lives in World War 2..rest in peace.
