Enneagram Type 8 (the Leader) in Love or Romantic Relationship

Today on #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about Type 8 of the enneagram in relationships!
8's like to be in control and have high energy. They are easily goaded into competitions and a non-competitive partner might be annoying to the strong-willed 8. However, a partner who has enough of an edge to stand up to an 8, but enough agreeability to let the 8 have strong opinions without being offended will be an ideal partner.
8's can struggle with not wanting to show or admit any "weaknesses", which can lead to a lot of defensive arguing. 8's arguments can cut like knifes when they aren't acting in self-awareness. If your partner is an 8, it's best to understand their aggressiveness as their means of trying to maintain a sense of control and power vs. as a direct threat to the relationship.
When in a healthy space, 8's can be the fun, spicy, opinionated significant other who can also act as a great leader. When 8's have a strong purpose they believe in, they will do what it takes to support that purpose and can use their nature for movement and good in the world. Using their energy and zest for constructive projects and constructive relationship goals make them wonderful partners who provide energy, direction, and life to their relationships and the world around them.

As an 8 woman, I am often devastated by those in my innermost circle not being protective of me. Since it is my 1st reaction to protect those I love, when others don’t do the same for me it is the most hurtful of betrayals. How do I not expect that kind of loyalty from others?

As a type 8 man, I completely understand this. If I wasn’t in a relationship or gay I would marry you. Lol What I had to do, very recently, was take a 120 sabbatical from everyone except from my immediate family. It is giving me a thicker skin and providing an analytical look at myself and the company I keep. I truly value my loyalty and all the attributes that accompany it so I’m more selective as to who gets that honor.

The tip of the spear or arrow bolt is called the quarrel. It is the multi-faceted diamond that will not break. Think in terms of history and only the arrowhead is found buried in the chest of your enemies. You are the vanguard and your rest is found in foreign soil. Your compatriots are found in the clash of the first wave, not in the same world as survivors. 🤔

I understand now, that it is also to protect me from when he cracks and "gets scary" I think that it is important to show your partner (A) that you are sorry when you are in the wrong and admit that and (B) that you respect his space and love him even when he is mad. It can be really hard to connect with them when they are in a state like that, so small gestures like little notes showing how much you love them, or especially things where you can get hands on and help them with something (these gestures depends on his needs, and what his love language is - you know him best) It is important to always be sencere about those gestures

I’m 8w7. At the 7:00 mark in your video you are talking about an 8 having to change the way the talk and present themselves to be heard, understood, accepted. (My words not yours.). Although this is my experience and I agree that to be accepted in the world 8’s, especially women have to “make themselves smaller” to be accepted, I’m disappointed that this is how it’s presented, rather than encouraging the 8 to be themselves with good communication, and encouraging others to recognize that the strength and power is innate and not meant to harm. What I heard is: If you’re an 8 … make yourself smaller to fit in.
