'I was in control of the aircraft until I let the brakes off''! That's how one former RAF pilot described his first flight in an English Electric Lightning.
The aircraft was the UK's first Mach 2 capable jet fighter, its brute force and raw power has become legendary. Designed in the Cold War days, its primary role was to take off, climb to height & intercept intruding Russian aircraft as fast as possible. In this role the aircraft excelled. However, its very poor endurance also became legendary.
This classic documentary follows the conception, design, testing & in-service career of this true thoroughbred from the 1950's through to its final days as an RAF front-line fighter.
