After retiring from the Navy, I was at a party and some guy asked me what I did in the military. I told him that I was a Navy pilot. He looked at me and rudely says "You don't look like a pilot." Whatever the hell that means. I'm not ugly or fat or weird looking. Just normal. Women like me and at the time, that's all that counts. Not all pilots look like the mustached swash buckling fighter pilot Robin Olds. That wasn't the first time I heard someone say something like this. I find it a bit amusing because guys like Randy Cunningham and the late Henry Kleeman sure and heck "Don't Look" like fighter pilots. Henry (Former Skipper of VF41) was short, kind of dumpy looking with a personality to match but, he was one hell of a fighter pilot. The same can be said about Randy Cunningham. Henry was a F4 combat veteran flying F14's and shot down a Libyan Fitter (I was there). Randy Cunningham shot down 5 Vietnamese including their top ace. Looks have nothing to do with ability and these guys are / were consummate warriors. To those jackasses out there who sum up people by their looks, you should think twice before you make your down putting rude remarks. I learned a long time ago, NEVER EVER under estimate someone because of their looks, etc. FYI. Henry Kleeman died in a mishap flying the F18. I think Henry was the only pilot to fly the F4, F14 and the F18.

I have over 1200 hours in the A6E Intruder with over 400 traps. I bailed for the airlines and was flying C9's in the Reserves. During this time, I was going through NAS Miramar and had a couple of buddies who were instructors with the Fighter Weapons School (FWS) also known as "Top Gun." I'm in my blue flight suit (What VR flyers wear) and was climbing up the stairs into the sacred honored spaces of Top Gun when I came across the commanding officer, Commander Randy Cunningham. He saw me in my blue zoom bag and asked "What in the hell are you doing here?" I replied "Hello, Skipper, I'm looking for Randy x x x x and Mike x x x x. He yelled at me "This is a fighting squadron with fighting men. Get the hell out of here!" I started to laugh thinking him just pulling my chain, He wasn't kidding! He chased after me threatening to kick my ass if I didn't immediately leave the Top Gun spaces. I didn't run but bustered out of their pronto. I wasn't humiliated and in fact deeply respected CDR Cunningham's intensity. FWS is a serious place and blue suited airline pilots aren't welcome and in fact, are a sign of weakness. I thought CDR Cunningham a great guy and terrific C.O. Regardless of how we came across each other, I'm glad that I got to meet him at his peak. FYI. I'm not a weak tit. Finishing #1 in my flight class, I had my choice of flying the F4 or the F14. I want to fly. At the time, the fighters weren't flying much . In the A6, we were averaging about 60 to 80 hours per month. That's v about 10 to 15 hours in fighters.

@@militaryaviationtv Yes, I did have a very interesting career. Having served in a different era, I'm no Randy Cunningham but have participated in several hot spots throughout the world. I was fortunate to have served with some incredible people who went on to become Blue Angels, Top Gun Instructors, Admirals, Generals, CNO, Astronauts, etc. I went from soloing in a T28 to playing poker with the Secretary of the Navy. I have first hand knowledge and inside information about the Iranian Rescue Attempt, 1981 Gulf of Sidra Shoot Down, USS Nimitz EA6B Flight Deck Accident, Intercepted a Russian Bear in an KA6 Tanker, Discovered a Russian Krivak inside a Norwegian fjord. I refused an order to eject me and my B/N during night time blue water operations with 12 foot seas. Transported Bob Hope Tour. Transported U.S. Marine bodies killed in Lebanon. Anecdotes from making the movie "Final Countdown." First hand knowledge of the inside back stabbing of Commander Emory Brown. Saved a drowning Seaman who fell off of the flight deck in shark infested waters. I have many great sea stories. Some sad and some funny. All are true.

Don't forget about Haiti. We 3/75 were going to invade Haiti 3 times and got canceled because of the fear of those at the top that they would look bad... again. Remember, Waco happened that same year, too. And, from April to June of 1994, we watched 1 million plus Tutsis get slaughtered in Rwanda and did nothing.... Thats 10,000 per day for 100 days.... mostly killed by machetes. I remember so well because I was at 3/75 during all of this. I was just in a different company.

Incorrect. The RAF Harrier GR.3s were only ever used in the ground attack role, during the Falklands War. The GR.3s were wired to carry Sidewinder Air-to-Air missiles prior to going down South, as the MOD anticipated that the Sea Harrier force would suffer significant loses, but this never happened.

sadly it was found out that we had run out of cash. The mistake was that the Super Buccaneer was not developed to its full potential. The Buccaneer was found out to be cheaper, faster and better at low level than the F111. As with all aircraft its the SAM that causes the problem. Not forgetting that the famed Duncan Sands Tory MP sounded the death knell for manned aircraft and unfortunately that mindset was embedded in the with the Defence Procurement side of government which of course was music to the ears for cancellation.
