This was about the first cricket I can remember, the dominance of the quick bowlers Hall and Trueman, also the cleverness of Shackleton, the flamboyance of the Windies’ batting, and the guts of Close and Barrington. And the sight of Cowdrey coming out with his arm in plaster was quite traumatic for a 9 yr old. Loved the game ever since....

Wes Hall's bowling run up and action had the graceful fluidity of ectoplasm. I can still vividly remember Wesley coming over to the boundary at Edgbaston in the 1963 test after warming up before the start of play. I was in the front row and as he towered over me, his head glistening with perspiration he gave me a sixpence to buy him an ice lolly. I duly scurried off to do so. One of my proudest moments. Came to this today to also watch some of Lord Ted as his death is announced. Had so many happy times watching Ted play. Thank you for this wonderful recording.

Fred Trueman. What a great bowler. Superb action. Easy to see how he bowled fast for 20 years and bowled over a thousand overs in four separate seasons. Would take todays bowlers at least three years to bowl that many.

He didn't bowl fast for 20 years - even by the late 50s he rarely bowled quickly. I wonder, when commentating, what he would have said about an England bowler who started a Test by having 3 long hops in a row being hit for 4.

One of the finest Tests I ever saw. Between 2 very fine sides. The Windies were the acknowleged World Champions in those days with a fantastic array of players. Hall and Griffiths were fierce. Gibbs provided the finesse. And let's not forget the great Gary Sobers. Best all rounder ever. And just in case they got stuck, they had Worrell and little Kanhai to fall back on. And England played their part. Barrington dug in, as he always did. Cowdrey showed immense courage coming in. But, for me, the stand out performance was Close. He took a terrible hammering off Hall and Griffiths. The bruises stayed with him for weeks.

I loved the crowd, the mixture of West Indian supporters and British supporters all cheering. I know racism was at it's peak back then, but we did not have it as bad as the African Americans. The 1960's was a rough time for the African American in the Southern part of America where they had segregation, there is no way you would see a crowd like this at a Baseball Game in America, the African American's would probably not be allowed into the stadium. I am happy I grew up in Great Britain I did not experience any racism and I thank Cricket 🏏 for being part of that by building a good foundation for British integration of the West Indian into our current society, I know some people might find that silly but I have never felt like a outsider in Britain and I am a British West Indian.❤🇬🇧

It's always fascinating to see 'old' clips such as these. One thing that strikes me is that some of the seamers (Shackleton in particular) got through their overs as quickly as some spinners do today! There didn't appear to be any time lost between overs they just got to their mark and bowled. Today there is such time wasting in between overs and during too!!

Teams were able to bowl in excess of 100 overs per day. Today, teams amble between overs, seemingly taking ages to set a field placing and stopping just because a twig fell 3 miles away!!

@@jshaers96 Go look at the scorecards. Hutton's team in '54-55 was infamous for pace bowlers with long runups & very slow over rates compared to pre-war. The push for 'brighter cricket' in the '50s was due to over rates reducing & defensive batting. It eventually led to limited overs cricket in England in '62.

20 overs an hour was usual pre-1950s. However, these days 15 is considered a good rate. I'd be surprised if they were only bowling 15 in Hutton's time. If so, I'm sure it wasn't the norm. People were complaining then about relative slowness of over rates, compared to now they'd seem quite lively. However, I'm happy to be corrected if you have any actual info rather than anecdotes. Brighter cricket' was more concerned with too many blockers blighting the game.

Imho, i think ICC has done nothing to promote a game in non cricket playing countries. In last decade, only Afghanistan has emerged in international cricket.
