Saturday 4 June 1977 when the England v Scotland Home International football match was held at Wembley stadium at the start of the long extended Silver Jubilee, and also delayed Spring Bank Holiday weekend up tae the end of the mini holiday that ended on Tuesday 7 June 1977, and i remember this game very well on the fact that there was an England and Scotland divide on my father's side of mae family. The game itself on Saturday 4 June 1977 was broadcast live on BBC1, i believe throughout the UK not just in both England and Scotland, but also in Wales and Northern Ireland tae. Mae English born Scottish father who had both Scottish born parents himself (mae Scots born paternal grandparents) and myself who was English born were both avid Scotland fans, and while mae and mae dad were loudly cheering on Scotland, both mae English born older brothers were cheering on England themselves. At the end when Scotland won, and Scotland fans at Wembley celebrated victory as if it was their World Cup final, beating the Auld Enemy by breaking the crossbar, digging up the turf, and invading the pitch, while mae two older brothers being England fans were brassed off and silent tae say the least, maeself and mae dad both proud Scotland supporters were jubilant and very happy tae see England getting beat. Great memories fae mae that day.

I'm English but i do have to say that it is pitiful what has happened to Scottish football. The Scottish team during this era was terrific and had some top top players in it. You only need look at the bench as well with Archie Gemmill, Kenny Burns and Lou Macari. I was nearly 10 the year after this game and Ally had even convinced me Scotland would win the world cup in '78 lol. Great side though.

Umm Mick Mills CAPTAINED England and won 42 Caps! It was not a Mike Brearley situation, either! Talbot six Caps. Pearson 15 Caps for 5 goals. Cherry 27 Caps and was better than bloody Phil Neal! Viv Anderson should have been the regular Right Back instead of Neal! Greenhoff 18 Caps! I think it was the Midfield that was an issue but who scored goals for England at that time?

@@glasssteel I think the problem was 2-11 in those days! Mills was not up to the highest international standards but a dependable, nice chap, leader in the dressing room etc, etc and some managers just love that sort of player. Significantly Mills made his debut for England against Yugoslavia in 1972 and had the misfortune to be up against 'The Magic Dragan' Dzajic who gave him a bit of a chasing and Ramsay never picked him again.

British Home Championship was discontinued after the 1983-84 competition. There were a number of reasons for the tournament's demise, including it being overshadowed by the World Cup and European Championships, falling attendances at all but the England v Scotland games, fixture congestion, the rise of hooliganism, the Troubles in Northern Ireland (civil unrest led to the 1980-81 competition being abandoned), and England's desire to play against 'stronger' teams. The fate of the competition was settled when the (English) Football Association, swiftly followed by the Scottish Football Association, announced in 1983 that they would not be entering after the 1983-84 Championship. The British Home Championship trophy remains the property of the Irish FA, as Northern Ireland were the most recent champions. The Championship was replaced by the smaller Rous Cup, which involved just England, Scotland and, in later years, an invited guest team from South America. That competition, however, ended after just five years.

Relaying a pitch is what they do repeatedly with the 'New' Wembley not the old.
