ENGLAND'S WEIRDEST CASTLE - Stokesay Castle - History

When visiting Shropshire, we decided to pop into Stokesay Castle. What we found was one of England's weirdest castles. Although it officially holds the title Castle, it is more like a fortified manor house.
This castle has a rich history, stemming from the medieval times in which one of the richest men in Medieval England bought the Castle and fortified it by building a huge tower for defence. During the reign of William the Conqueror, the Marcher Earldoms were established. These were a group of Earldoms which were fortified along the English border to keep the Welsh at bay and away from invading England. This Castle would have sat in the Marcher Earldoms nearby to Ludlow. Throughout its history it has been sieged during the English Civil War, and it possesses a rather interesting and unique history.
Join us for a tour around, and to find out the history behind England's weirdest castle, Stokesay Castle.
