England's Smallest City - A City That Time Forgot

Take a trip back in time with me as we explore this forgotten wonder of British history, a City that has stood still in time since the Medieval Period... England's Smallest City.
#uk #somerset #wells #britain #history #cathedral #streetinterview #england #vlog
In this Travel Vlog we explore the Ancient Medieval Cathedral City of Wells, nestled in the heart of Somerset, this forgotten wonder of English History seems to have stood still in time since the medieval period.
In these Real Britain UK Travel Vlogs, we explore what made Britain "Great" and try to capture the UK in all its beauty while showing you what it's really like here in the UK.
When you say to people you've visited Wells, firstly, people look back at you puzzled and ask "Wales"? This goes to show how little we know our own Isles!
In these UK Vlogs I aim to shine a light on the lesser known areas of Britain and shine a positive light on those often forgotten areas and people within our beautiful island.
At times in this Vlog, it felt as if I had stumbled into Hogwarts or Game of Thrones. The architecture, History and wonder of this awe inspiring city was truly remarkable.
I hope you enjoy this Real Britain Vlog, remember to Like, Comment & Subscribe to the Channel! Aiming for 1000 subs by the end of the year so every little helps!

Wells is a real gem for sure. The sad fact is that so many British towns and cities have been trashed since the 1960’s by cheap junk architecture. Wells is one that escaped.

@@JoefishJ Hi Joe. Winchester is a favourite of mine though of course it’s much better known than Wells. Also St. Albans is overall very nice and not so famous even though it’s got a Cathedral of Norman origins. Up north you’ve got Durham with the Cathedral recognised as one of the World’s greatest buildings It’s been a while since I was there but I remember parts of it were very nice and historic.

Sadly not the UK's smallest city but most probably Englands with a population of 12,000. The smallest in the UK is St Davids in Wales with a population of around 1,800+....and before anyone pipes up I'm English. Having read the comments I'm not the first to point this out. Lovely video though.

Cool stuff Joe! As Southerners, we miss out on the locality of many important British landmarks in the North or Midlands, but we are blessed with architecture similar to that you've shown in Wells. Up the road in Bath, or the historical cathedrals blessing Salisbury, and further afield Winchester or Oxford. I'm very familiar with Winchester and can highly recommend it - but do your readings beforehand to properly understand the history; else you'd mistake buildings of over 1000 years for commercial restaurants! And one of the country's oldest pubs is hiding discretely down a narrow alleyway. Safe travels and look forward to upcoming videos, cheers!

You should have commented on those “scissor arches” that hold up the central tower - they are a unique piece of architectural engineering. And although they look almost modern, they were actually added in the 1340s to hold up the tower that was unstable and beginning to crack. Wells cathedral is an absolute gem, like so much of the tiny city.

I very much enjoyed your video - the Cathedral, castle and short walkround.....but whoa there! You are well off the mark with the UK's smallest city, and it ISN'T Wells by a long chalk!!. Officially, the smallest Cathedral City in the UK is St David's in Pembrokeshire - you can walk through it in just over five minutes; even the grounds of the Cathedral are bigger than the "city!!" Wells is only the smallest city by population numbers. You might want to check it out. Still, a nice little video, and no mistake!

@@JoefishJ Thank for your reply Joe. Locations in Wales? To be honest Joe, I've lived in Wales for forty years, but architurally I don't think it has anything to compare with Wells - or anywhere else for that matter (I'll get lynched for saying that)! For scenery, the Pembs Coastal Path is certainly spectacular, and it takes in St David's. Anywhere from Laugharne Castle and Dylan Thomas' Boathouse, through Pendine, its Sands and the famouse Land Speed Record attempts, Tenby with its many facets, Pembroke town and the rest of the coastline. Wales has tones of history, but apart from its many castles, there is very little that's tangible. I'm an Ulsterman (N. Ireland) and have a natural bias. Almost every town there has some historical association, with perhaps as many Manorial houses as England, and a coastline like the Antrim Coast Road built into the sea. Giant's Causeway, Dunluce Castle, Belfast's stunning architecture, and the beauty spots of Strangford Lough. Cookstown, which has the widest street in the UK. Then, of course, there are the Mournes Mountains, a favourite venue for hikers, hill walkers, campers - both above and below the clouds! It all depends on what your preferences are. Derry City e.g. is the only city in the UK (as far as I know) that has the only complete and intact old city wall that you can walk, complete with it guns (Roaring Meg and others), and Beautiful Guildhall. You can also do the free tour of Belfast City Hall - a magnificent structure - along with the memorable TiTanic Quarter. I haven't started yet!!!!

PS: I think your thoughts about visiting the rural areas is important, if you want to see the real England. I think that goes for most countries; Here in Denmark, the majority of tourists only visit Copenhagen, and see the main attractions (like everyone else visiting). @oceantribeuk not as small as St David's. You are close to St Asaph in terms of size.

Sorry mate, but you are wrong about Wells being the UK's smallest city! St. David's, here where I live in Pembrokeshire, is the UK's smallest city!

Wells is nicer than Bath. Its like still actually English. With English people and tourists. Its not yet been ruined by chain cafes or lots of immigration..

Not the smallest city in the uk, whilst Wales is in the uk (not for long I hope) St Davids is the smallest. Any place with a cathedral is a city.

Correct about St Davids, but absolutely incorrect with your statement - despite popular opinion, towns don't 'meet' a criteria to be cities like having a university or cathedral - it's bestowed by the crown. Some cities do not have cathedrals, like Southampton, Bath and Cambridge. Some towns have cathedrals but are not cities, like Arundel, Bury St Edmunds, Guildford and Millport. Then again, given the rubbish in your KZread biography about leftism and woke-ism, I don't expect much logic from you.

@@sekhmet7440 How very sad of you, you need to know I am a proud leftie and woke, something that takes intelligence unlike you. The crown can give places with NO cathedral the title of city but places with cathedrals are by virtue cities and don't need no royal waste of time telling them if they are or not. Did you know that Bangor cathedral lies on the oldest site of a cathedral in the entire waste of time uk. Been there since 500 ad. Best to stick to things you know ... like Sponge Bob Square Pants.

That “rule” refers to attending services in church NOT visiting for tourist purposes. Do you also insist that women cover their hair with hats or scarves in a church or are you just a trolling hypocrite?
