I'm really surprised it lasted that long!! Many times in the spring I would have to take the housing off and clean under it because mice have nested there over the winter!! They had the spark plug wire chewed down to about two or three stands of wire!! I just kept wrapping it with electrical tape and it kept running!!☺

If you want to verify the coil as the problem, take an ohm meter and connected it to the high voltage spark plug lead and the metal of the coil. It should read some resistance. Then use a hair dryer or something like that and heat the coil up and watch the meter. It probably shorts out when hot. That proves the coil is bad. JMHO

About 10 years ago I had an old 3 HP Briggs on my push mower that I suspected had a bad coil. Didn't want to spend any money unless I had to then I remembered I had a dead 12 HP Briggs. Pulled the coil off the 12 HP and it fit right on the 3 HP. The only difference was the 12 HP coil had a boot on the spark plug so I couldn't ground out the plug to shut it off, had to wire a switch into the kill wire.

Wow, I have a Poulan mower that looks identical to your Craftsman, probably because it was made at the same factory. It has the same no-start problem. I thought it was due to one of the interlock switches, so I disabled all of them and still the dang thing will stall at times and won't restart. I'll bet my coil is bad too, so thanks for this video Roadking! May I ask where you purchased the replacement coil? PS, love the masking tape and paper towel bandage! My mower is doing same thing...starts runs fine cuts fine...doesn't even shut off on its own...if i turn it off manually though it wont start back up....very confusing seeing how it runs and will stay running but im wondering if somehow the higher rpms causes the coil to work efficient enough because the higher rpms actually can produce a quality spark but when i start it by pulling it and it is hot it just doesnt produce enough spark or the same quality of spark that it does when it is running at higher rpms

  • @nashguy207
    @nashguy2076 жыл бұрын

Yep I figured it was the coil I had them do the same thing on weed eaters and blowers when they got hot they wouldn't run very good and if they died couldn't get them to start again till they cooled off. Now I have seen something else cause this same problem on commercial mowers with gas and diesel engines on them. Mow for about an hour and they run fine shut them off and a few minutes later try to start the engine and no luck until they sit about an hour and cool off then they will start and mow fine again. If your mower has an electric pto clutch it will do this and you have to replace the clutch then they start and run perfect again hot or cold. Great tip roadking are you on a blood thinner by chance? Have a great day buddy. God Bless!!!

I'm learning stuff about engines from watching channels like yours but I'm trying to think of reasons that the coil would cause that issue. When the engine is running there's still spark so the coil should be working so my assumption is that there's still spark when you try to start hot - so this means the electrical connections still work. The coil is an electrical component and it's resistance should increase with heat so the spark intensity will reduce as the coil gets hotter. So is it that the coil drops out of some tolerance range when the engine is hot causing you to have too weak of a spark? Just trying to understand why the coil would cause that issue.

There are literally thousands of secondary windings that are of course insulated. However, over time and when hot the failing insulated wires can touch when expanded from engine heat and short to ground denying the plug the necessary 20K volts generated.

My two cylinder Briggs & Stratton 16.5 horse power would starts sputtering after about a half an hour, I would pull the choke out and it would cough and keep going for a while and then it would start to sputter and quit. If I let it sit for a few hours, it would start right up again, it did this for about four years....Finally,. I put a new coil on it. That fixed it. I guess when coils get old, the insulation on the windings inside the coil breakdown..New coil with the plug were all one complete bolt on unit, $12 on eBay

if those things have a plastic float, I would make sure you let the bowl run out of gas before storing it for any length of time. the gasoline breaks down the plastic so if you can cut off the gas line before the carburetor while the engine is running you're good.

Great video....however.....I think you needed to run it hot again, then try restarting. I am sure it would work though.

With a plug wire that long you could run your neighbours mower! Or is it to make the spark dizzy! Look after your tools, buy good quality and they last a long time

Im having the near exact same problem with my 1965 Ford Mustang. Additives aren't helping, it stutters bad and sometimes dies when you hit the gas (hot), and on the way back from the dentist yesterday it even backfired once. It died on me several times that trip too and I was stranded for about 5-10 minutes after I came out of the office. Temperature isnt that hot outside, maybe mid 70s to 80s F. Car is not overheating despite having a 195 degree thermostat and no fan shroud. I figured Id just tap the coil and or distributor while its running and see if it affects it at all.

Bro please answer im having this exact problem on my 2000 mustang and it takes a couple tries to start when its cold and i drive it and if i give it gas it sputters bad and when i turn it off and wait a couple minutes while the engine is hot it wont start back up until i let it cool down please help me i changed the spark plugs, coil wires, coil pack , camshaft sensor, throttle position sensor, coolant temp sensor, and i even thought it was the ecm so i bought another one on ebay and had that reprogrammed and its still doing the same thing

@@carlos2160 It might have to do with the fuel system. Logical deduction after changing almost everything else would say the problem is there. Use a scan tool on it or pay someone to use a dealership grade one and go from there. Might be anything from needing new injecters or a fuel filter to needing a new fuel pump. Dealership grade scan tools can see all the info concerning air fuel ratio, codes and things like that in real time, but the average joe isn't gonna have that in his home garage because they're upwards of 2000 dollars. On modern cars a whole bunch of things can cause it. In my case, I had to if I remember right rebuild my carburetor. And or get new ignition points for the distributor.

@@DAN007thefoxx1 so one of those things is causing the engine to start rough when cold and wont turn on after you use it 1 time until it cools down, correct?

@@carlos2160 I think its most likely injectors then. IF its running too rich. That or the air filter is really dirty and needs replacing. But yeah, it would be hard to tell for sure without a good scan tool. Like I said alot of things could cause that. Maybe even the Mass Airflow Sensor if it has one.

That's a symptom of no tappet/valve clearance. When the parts expand , it holds the valve open just barely. If it does it again, I'd check the clearance. .003 -. 005 intake, .009 - .011 exhaust.

Sounds like a case of Hot Coil Syndrome, Citroen 2CV engines have that problem on tired coils, start fine when cold, but stop the engine & try to start when hot and they refuse to start until the coil has cooled (or been cooled by other means)... :)

If this doesn't fix it look at your intake clearance. May have little to no clearance. It should be. 6thousands . That engine has a compression relieve system. Basically a small pin on the intake cam lob that pushes intake valve open making it easy to start. You did a valve job on it which means the engine got some unfiltered air. Usually you loose intake clearance but not exhaust clearance. 6 on intake and 10 on exhaust. If the air filter is foam NOTHING CLEAN WITH ! Use hot soapy water dab dry then work on a teaspoon of motor oil then squeeze out the excess.
