ENGINE TEARDOWN and ANALYSIS - Project Underdog #4

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It's time for a new episode of Project Underdog. Today we tear into the 4AFE engine to see what's it like inside and to prepare it for machining. The future of this humble 1.6 liter from the 90s looks interesting as it will be turbocharged to 300 hp and then installed into my Toyota MR2 mk1.
This engine teardown is more than that, because we will also be analyzing some design aspects of the 4AFE, inevitably comparing it a bit to the more famous 4AGE engine and we will also do a bit of engine forensics to see what kind of life the engine has lead so far. I tried to keep this video relaxing and even a bit ASMR -ish, don't know it worked - let me know if it did :)
We start the engine disassembly by removing the intake manifold and opening it up to see inside. This is followed up by the removal of the exhaust manifold. The valve covers come off next, followed by the distributor and camshafts. Next comes off the cylinder head and we finish things off by removing the pistons, connecting rods and the crankshaft. Along the way we see if this engine was take care of and we also discover some peculiarities.
A special thank you to my patrons:

I wonder if those exhaust ports would be that much of a limiting factor, at least at your desired power levels. Head looks really good inside! I love to see a geared cam even if it isn't the "superior" arrangement. Does help get that nice steep intake angle though. Also wow those are pointy cam lobes. Metal shavings looked like they may have just been some stripped threads from the engine or a bolt. All the bearings look great! Awesome video. Can't wait for more. Look it's a boxer engine now! Hahaha.

The circular things on the intake manifold is for the EGR system on the California emissions variant of that engine. On the low emissions variant, the circular things would have been machined further and the EGR valve would be located there. Since you got the regular version, those serves no purpose and can be safely machined away if you want to port out the intake manifold.

How rpm maximum power, and torque? I miss this engine for scrap. It is in very good condition, it's motors run in Africa. there will be no such engines and there is some potential as you can see. A compressor is enough for me, and about 160-170 horses (in a light car it is enough power.) Regards! 😊old engines the best.

Correct if wrong Tensonor is actually manual..... the spring is only fuctional during initial tensioning and if the tenson bolt loosens. The head gasket is indead correct the misaligned holes act as restrictions and help direct the coolant.. if you research coolant flows for the engine you would be surprised

  • @d4a

    @d4a

    4 жыл бұрын

According to the 4age factory service manual, you let the spring do the tensioning, rotate engine three times and tighten the pulley at whatever tension the spring generates. You then check belt slack with a gauge and replace spring if slack is incorrect. I really should have explained the head gasket thing better, got a lot of comments on it. Yes, I know gaskets can be used to block of holes, but what's weird is that the HG itself has holes that lead into nothing. Dead ends. This confuses me because it has no purpose whatsoever.

Coolant passages very rarely line up exactly with the gasket holes. It's easier to cast heads and cylinders with the holes larger than needed then make the gasket with the proper size holes for proper coolant distribution. A lot of first year models in a series will have a different gasket than the last years in the same series because manufacturers will optimise the coolant passage sizes on the gasket throughout the series run to better distribute coolant.

  • @d4a

  • @buildingracingvideos4714

@@d4a same thing. If the manufacturer decides they don't need a passage in that spot a lot of times they will only delete the passage on one thing. Like you'll have a passage in the head, one in the gasket but the passage on the block is blocked off. Why change 3 things when all you need to change is one. Saves money. A good example is that really stupid zulu mod on Toyota's. I think it is the 1jz's, but they had cooling distribution issues so they blocked off the coolant passage on the deck if I remember correctly but left it on the gasket and head. Could be the other way around. I say the zulu mod is stupid because the passage was blocked because of distribution issues and people open it up thinking it's going to help cooling.

Yep, cooling system has been ignored. Not a big deal; rest of the engine looks like it was maintained well. I recommend that you do NOT alter the combustion chamber to reduce compression. There is no need to reduce compression ratio if you are using an aftermarket ECU, and reducing squish will make the engine more likely to detonate...whether it is turbocharged or not. You want to minimize the squish area to maximize performance,

Watching you use a legged puller to remove that crank accessory pulley almost made me cry, there are tapped holes in that pulley for a reason and it's so you can bolt a plate puller onto it. I see way to many chipped and damaged 4age pulleys all because people use the wrong puller.

Maybe because the 7afe is an interference engine and the 4afe is not. Plus The 7afe was in later MR2's I think. Not in the mk1. I am speculating however.

@@gedavids84 Sure. A friend had a MK2 for a while. I have had 93 5door Corolla with a 4AFE in for the last five years. I love it actually. It is by far my favorite car I have had. Also I work on my own vehicles and it is so easy to work on it is unreal. Compared to the likes of Audi etc.

Oh no, you didn't put a set screw in the timing scissor gear pre-tensioner before you removed the camshaft! That will be fun to fix lol

  • @d4a

That's not how things are done in this case. Service bolts are needed only when the sub-gear is removed and reinstalled. Upon reinstall of the cam all I need to do is align all the timing marks and possibly measure backslash. So no, there's no need to "fix" anything.

I'm just going off sound I think you need a little more air pressure for your impact gun. It sounds low and should be able to take that crank bolt off no problem.

Im too bro. Swapping my 4a-fe on carina e to newer car, and include supercharger mercedes eaton. But what about the ecu, oe denso, its not good to tuning.. and what about transmision. The drivetrain will not match the original gearbox from 4afe. You will probably have to change the axle shafts, etc. what about the beam? a lot of work. not to mention the "paws" of the engine that need to be welded and adjusted. Did You succeed with the project?
