    I wanted to comment on removing the hood. The use of painter’s tape is such a good idea. I use that stuff for all sorts of purposes and mainly for marking where things go. When I remove a hood, I always loosen the 4 bolts (or nuts) remove the top fasteners first and then do the bottom ones. I saw someone do the opposite and folded the hood at the top because they lost their grip. I’ve never forgotten that.

    I have a question on mine it was a 3 speed car and we’re swapping it out for a C4 automatic. I noticed there’s no plate between the engine and transmission in this video, just the flex plate. Do I remove the one that was on there for the manual transmission and just install the C4 with the flex plate only?

    I'm in cali Alf. I love it videos.. I have a a question!! I have 1965 mustang 200 3.3l. Automatic engine . And a c4 tranny which was connected to a 1975 galaxy. I had a problem mating-them. But I replace the correct Bellhousing, I replaced the correct torque converter. Now the 24spline connected to the Torque converter is good but diameter to the pump is small.. what do I do? Or whats the ideal thing to do? What part should I change? TQ or pump? .

    Great video. I was wondering if you could tell me what is absolutely necessary to change when swapping out a 200 i6 with a 289 or maybe 302. I hear people say changing components such as the rear end and front suspension are necessary and other say it is not. Thank you.

  • @AlfsMustangGarage

    @AlfsMustangGarage

    3 жыл бұрын

    You know to be honest, nothing is really absolutely necessary aside from the engine mounts and transmission bell housing. However, changing the front suspension and rear axle are highly recommend. The 6 cylinder front spindles are smaller and lighter duty. The rear axle is smaller and lighter duty. If you want things to hold up and last, you'll want to swap out the whole front end for a v8 front end as well as the rear. 8" differentials we're great for v8 cars and very durable. There are lots of factors and options so I guess it kind of depends on what kind of power you're going to be putting down.

    Thanks for this video. I'm working on pulling the in-line 6 from my 1966 mustang. It has the 3-speed transmission. Is it possible to pull the transmission at the same time? The existing 3-speed transmission is sloppy so I want to either rebuild it or swap it out for a 1967 or later 3-speed that has a synchronized 1st gear. If its possible to pull both at the same time, how do I disconnect the clutch bar from the engine? Thx

  • @AlfsMustangGarage

    @AlfsMustangGarage

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's very possible to pull both at once. I've done it before but you'll want to connect your engine hoist differently then what I demonstrated on this video. You'll want to balance it better from front to rear. I actually have a video on the clutch bar for a V8. The process will be similar for a 6 cylinder.

     I used to do a bit of this kind of work and I always found it easier to do the engine and transmission at the same time but as @@AlfsMustangGarage says you really have to be weary of the balance and where the chain is in order to maintain balance. It’s probably easier to do with V8’s because the v8 engine is heavy enough to force it level.

    Pretty much. I have a video for the install process kzread.info/dash/bejne/o4mFksRuf5jOm5s.html The transmission will be supported by its own cross member and mount. So I would advise removing the oil pan to see if there is any sludge and clean that out. Once the pan is back on with a new gasket, add your engine oil (with high Zinc content) and then manually prime the oil pump. Watch this video on how to prime the pump kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKGLpKyAY5C4c5c.html Except in your case, you'll want to have a helper manually turn the crankshaft while priming the oil. That will get oil flowing to all parts of the bearings. You will also want to remove the valve cover to see if oil is getting to all the rocker arms. That's the biggest thing that I do with engines before I do all the work of installing. There are too many unknown factors with engines that have been sitting for years. That's why I open them up, take a look, get the oil flowing, test the oil pressure. I have a video for testing the oil pressure too. It's on a V8 but it's the same process for a 6 cylinder.

    So the first thing I would ask you is if your car is an original v8 car or a 6 cylinder car. The second thing I would ask you is what you want the end goal for the car to be. As in a nice reliable cruiser or a street beast with lots of power or whatever you have in mind. And third, is the car solid? These cars are old enough to be concerned about the structure of the floor and what not. Those are my big questions whenever someone is considering big changes for a car.

  • @AlfsMustangGarage

    @AlfsMustangGarage

    Okay so ya the most recommended things are to upgrade the suspension to all V8 options. Everything on the front end of a 6 cylinder was was light duty. So you will want to plan on swapping everything out there. The rear end also was a small light duty 7.5" differential. You'll want to upgrade to at least an 8". There is no need for a 9" unless you're going to be throwing down some serious power. But for most stock or mildly modified 302's, an 8" Ford will be just fine. Then of course you're cooling system is going to need upgraded as well once you're actually throwing in the V8 but other than that, thats pretty much where I would start. Front suspension, steering, spindles, front disc brakes, 8" ford differential. Let me know if you need any parts to get started on your process and let me know if you have any other questions.

    Watch both of your videos of you removing your cylinder and taking it to be cleaned or rebuilt and you put it back on. Why are you replacing entire engine, didn't the engine run better after that? Or did I miss a video or something.

  • @AlfsMustangGarage

    @AlfsMustangGarage

    So I uploaded those videos out of sequence. The engine was replaced first because it had way too many issues and needed an entire rebuild. We found a replacement locally that was a fresh rebuild. Well it turns out on the replacement engine the bottom end was rebuilt but not the cylinder head. So when we fired it up, it was missing on the 2 cylinders. That's when I did the diagnosis video and then removed the head, had it rebuilt and put it back on. I should have edited the posted the engine removal and replacement first but it's just a not of film to go through and it was on my old camera lol. Did you notice the quality of film go from really good to not so good? So anyways that's what happened. All the cylinder head work was on the replacement engine.

    @@AlfsMustangGarage Ok I understand now, I like your videos, it's helping me with my 1963 ford falcon ranchero, this car sat for 10 years, it has the same engine as your mustang's, I am noticing that ford used the same engines in the falcon early years. I did a compression test, I also found that I had misfires as well, I went straight to taking head cover off, I found several of my push rods bent. So I'm going change all push rods and lifters and go from there. Thank you for answering me, you're videos are a tremendous help, keep them coming lol. If you have any suggestions for me, like to hear them. Thanks

    Oh right on! Ya they are great engines and will last. The cylinder heads come off way easy. Just some of the things you have to watch for is if the engine has solid lifters or hydraulic lifters. Some of those early engines had solid lifters I believe so just watch for that because it's a different process for valve adjustments and what not. I have found that ford6.com has tons of great technical information on those engines also. That website has helped me a lot too. Good luck, thanks for watching and subscribing!
