There’s a clear difference between appreciating someone’s vocals and blindly pretending that their vocals are flawless while they’re not. I like Tiffany’s voice way more than Seohyun’s voice, yet it doesn’t stop me from confirming loud and clear that Seohyun is clearly more proficient vocally than Tiffany. Tiffany’s main fortes are her lower registers, mid belts lower than B4, and her relaxed falsetto/headvoice (keyword, relaxed doesn’t mean the same as supported)

@@albinorat4411 maybe. But it's their opinion and preference. The problem lies on why people need to actually write their hate. I never liked Tiffany but I don't go spreading hateful words. Its true that sometimes I commented stuff like "after TTS debuted, it had been their vocal era" or "Tiffany doesn't fit this line of song". And honestly as a listener, her voice "irritates" me. But when I listened to their english cover songs, she was pretty good. When I heard her solo songs, it also showed her vocal prowess. I understood it then that Tiffany's Americanized style of singing doesn't complement the "cutesy or tamed" flavor of gg songs.

Her new solo work is fantastic. Her voice has so much character. I love "teach you." "Born again" and "Lips on lips". So good, very different from what Girls Gen did.

My 2 cents. I believe (as a Jessica-biased SONE) that Jessica is indeed irreplaceable, but Tiffany did what is expected of her. Tiffany covering Sica's lines sounds weird because of their different vocal color and texture, but as performers, you cannot let a hole in the wall remain as hole, and someone should cover that hole Jessica left. And SM felt that Tiffany is the best person to cover that hole for the most part (since Taeng already has a huge part vocally in GG). And Tiffany worked really hard to improve her vocals and overall artistry (since IMO she is more of a vocalist than dancer; remember their debut?). So I agree that nobody is better between Sica and Fany; both excel in their own rite. Sica is the best as Sica (the Ice Queen), and Fany is the best Fany (the Eye Smile Queen). And if Fany is nailing Sica's part, I think it's because of Fany's natural extrovert energy.

I agree. I think people get too caught up in these fantasy that Jessica was being "replaced" No one can ever replace her, not even SNSD would even want that. They never added a new 9th member because that spot belongs to Jessica since 2007. The only ones with the right to fill in for Jessica are her members and they split her lines quite evenly among the girls.

One wonders why Sunny didn't pick up some of those lines instead, to my ear she had the vocal timbre next most similar to Jessica's. Or maybe do a three-way trade. Give Jessica's lines to Taeyeon, but then shift some of Taeyeon's lines to Tiffany (or other members). More work, but might have resulted in better end product? Distributing lines in k-pop songs is a delicate art, and a lot of internal considerations (vocal range, timbre, and member popularity) go into it.

@@xheralt Yeah I don't understand why they had Tiffany do it, since her range is a lot lower and her voice huskier than Jessica's. This means not only does she have trouble hitting the notes, it's also a weird color for the lines themselves. Sunny definitely has a closer range, maybe even Seohyun for those delicate lines. I love Tiffany, and her voice is great, but her range just isn't up there. She's never been able to keep up with high notes, even in her own lines/songs, so I don't understand why they overloaded her with more.

@@xheralt Regarding that, if you listen to all of the OT8 performances singing OT9 songs, you'll see that not all of Jessica's lines went to Tiffany. All of them got a share of Jessica's lines except Hyoyeon. This video particularly focused on Tiffany covering Sica's lines. As for Sunny covering Sica, listen to Mr. Mr. OT8 performance. I agree with you that she nailed Sica's verse.

Jessica has a very light voice and she knows how to manage her mixed voice, Tiffany has a heavy voice and she usually goes from the heavy to falsetto instead of mixing (no that this is a problem) that's why it seems like she "struggles" in some parts (or she actually struggles) Covering Jessica is not easy, she has the perks of someone with a cutesy featherlight voice and the perks of a main vocal with so much power (and it seems so easy for her) A tone like Jessica's is very unique, she had the parts that she had for a reason, Tiffany is different and has lines that were given to her because of her tone too

I agree. This proves that Jess isn’t playing with her main vocal title, she has really great technique to control her voice. Tiffany did improve quite much, but still not as versatile as Jessica.

Quick fact about vocals and singing. The note Tiffany struggles with is called the breaking point/register break. It's the note between a singer's lower and higher registers. They can sing notes above that breaking point perfectly, it's just this one note that usually is the problem, all singers have it and normally you either avoid it in the song (that's why they didn't give that part to Tiffany) or with lots of practice singers figure out a way to use a mixed voice to get through it. But the latter technique is hard to pull off when you're dancing and singing at the same time and catching your breath.

I'm more annoyed of "fans" that can't even tell if their idols are singing live or not and just make random assumptions.

Tiffany and Jessica were always my biases in gg and I really like Jessica’s vocal tone in general so I tend to like Jessica’s version of the lines. I think in general Tiffany did really well covering Jessica, obviously they have VERY different sounds.

To all the people hating on any member of SNSD.... But still call themselves *Sones* .... *YOU'RE OUT OF THE BAND* ..... *SONES* and *SNSD* are family ... We don't need toxic people ...

I like Tiffany's version of Get Wild - it sounds amazing, and the last part of Whoah oh in The Great Escape. But my preferences of the other songs are in Jessica's voice. It's sad to see that I won't ever see Jessica perform Divine.

Many people think that Tiffany is guilty of Jessica's departure and they hate her for anything. For me tiffany does her job very well and always gives her best, her voice is very strong and beautiful and in many parts of Jessica that gave Fany she sounds amazing.

When Tiffany sings Jessica's lines, it gives a different flavor in the whole song. There are lines that fit Tiffany but higher notes strains Tiffany's voice. Sunny's forte are her mid to high register while Seo's an expert in mid & mixed register. How will we know their capabilities if we haven't heard their take? I am a Jessica stan but I always believed that Sunny and Hyoyeon were always underrated, not giving them the chance to explore their vocal tones.

Yeah I find it so stupid, like sure she lip sang, but so did everyone else so who cares? Idols perform hundreds of times a year for their comebacks, they can't do them all live. For every 10 lip sung performances there are 50 live ones. And the Japanese songs just had less chances to be performed since they are a Korean group singing in korea...

@@shanlie3505 I won't throw stones here. I guess that's how you do it in Kpop. But it is really frowned upon in US artist's performances. Go live or go home. A lot of US artists lose their good reputation for lip-syncing. Tiffany upholds those American standards. When you pay for a live concert, that is what you get with Tiffany, not a recording.

I’m gonna be really objetive here, she had a Main vocalist tittle right? In that case she kinda deserves the criticism for the extreme playback abuse. She should have been the one singing live along with Taeyeon until the end, and didn’t happened. Jessica herself admited that she did playback meanwhile Taeyeon did all the job alone, apologizing for it. (Do some research and you will find the article) People still don’t get why Taeyeon stopped milking the interactions with her and started to ignore her full force, this is one of the reasons, most of jessica fans can’t admit she was a fraud on her position and didn’t stand out to the tittle, and that’s a fact. even myself was a fan and I could notice that most of her performances were not live. Meanwhile TTS has to carry the live singing she just didn’t. And that’s why lot of jessica stans hates TTS until today, they think Tiffany stole the spot but she gained the spot for her hard work and passion and if jessica wa left behind was for her own lack of interest. And this needs to be talked because most of her fanbase stills shading others with this being a fact.

I wonder if sones ever thought about how difficult it would be to all of a sudden have to cover your close friends’ parts Also imagine if it was reversed & how hard it would be for Jessica to cover Tiffany’s lines

I love them both, but you are correct. Jessica just couldn't fill the hole Tiffany's departure would have made. Her voice is beautiful, but she just can't hit the lower notes at the volume needed. They are both gifted singers but Jessica's lower range projection is more limited. (but her highs are great)

I know this video is from 4 yrs ago but as a youngone(Fany's fandom), Sone and lilies. It's really hard to see my biases get hated for something they didn't do and they don't have control off. They do worked hard for everything that's why over the years i'm still here supporting SNSD, supporting Tiffany all the way to their solo careers. 😊

Its obvious SNSD would be having a hard time covering Jess' part. I think Tiff was bold and strong enough to take the challenge especially with how different their tones are. She's brave. realistically speaking Jessica's voice is everywhere in an snsd song from solo lines, harmonies, adlibs and her voice is easily distinguished in most chorus. There are songs that almost does not sound like an snsd song after an ot8 performance.

I saw Tiffany live in October of last year and she killed every single note in her set. SM worked her to the bone. She never got time to properly rest her voice when she was with the group. She hit notes I never thought she’d be able to and she did it with ease. Tiffany can sing much better than we all think. She just needs to properly take care of her voice.

Tbh the people who hate on Tiffany's vocals are usually the ones who hate her and just want to say something bad about her. -especially some people that we've all- -seen on youtube lol- She and Jessica are different people, of course it's not going to sound same. I think they hit different cuz Tiffany and Jessica have very different voice pitchs, Jessica sounds more girlish and high pitched, gives the "forever young" vibe, the eternal barbie girl. When i first saw snsd Tokyo dome live of galaxy supernova i didn't know much about snsd yet but i remember thinking the girl singing in the galaxy yeahhh was so gooodd... Now that i m a sone its so weird to find out that Tiffany was criticized for that performance

I'll try to add some vocal technique perspectives to this video. Everything I say here will be purely technical and I will NOT analyze vocal color, tone, or how well their voices fit the style of a song. In Gee, both Jessica and Tiffany are straining those high notes, but Jessica is able to maintain a mixed voice in all notes, while Tiffany switches to falsetto on the word "yeah" because it is out of her range. Tiffany's has a general problem with her mixed voice being too loud while her falsetto being too soft, so the volume becomes inconsistent when she switches between the two registers. In Divine, Tiffany was breaking down so did quite well putting that into consideration. In a technical perspective, she was straining and unstable on the word "one" and had the same problem with the breaking point between the lower and upper register when switching to falsetto, but the part with full falsetto after that was heavenly. Sliding from mixed voice to falsetto is very difficult and many vocalists struggle with this. On the studio version, Jessica indeed had a smoother transition between the lower and upper register, and her ending note had more resonance. She was likely autotuned tho, so it's not a fair comparison. For all the parts in Paparazzi, they were both in their supported range, but Tiffany was less nasal than Jessica. Jessica has persistent issues with nasality. Some people find Tiffany's voice to be sexy for her huskiness, while some people find Jessica's voice to be alluring for her nasality (because it sounds like a cat). Technique-wise, nasality is a flaw, so Tiffany takes the cake in this one. The following songs are all lip-synced or autotuned so I will skip them. In AMLIFY, Jessica demonstrated a VERY smooth transition from a soft falsetto to a strong mixed belting. This is Tiffany's weakness as I mentioned before. For the high notes, they are out of Tiffany's vocal range so she sounds unstable. Lastly in The Boys, both of them were unstable but Tiffany did better overall because she is good at low notes. Jessica's notes were mostly shaky and at the edge of cracking, while Tiffany's voice was generally more upfront despite being slightly unstable in a few notes. They both have their strengths and weakness, but Jessica is the stronger vocalist overall with a wider vocal range, better transition between registers, a more stable voice, and a higher frequency of achieving resonance. Her weaknesses include an occasional tendency to crack, pitchy high notes, and serious nasality. Tiffany is a decent vocalist, she has a well-supported lower register, a powerful projection, and better musicianship. Her weaknesses include detached registers, instability and very noticeable straining on high notes, and poor volume control.

Really tiffany shouldve been a main vocalist. Here's the real tea about being a main vocalist in kpop : in kpop who ever has the best vocals and the best range is the main vocalist. But if that main vocalist leaves the lead will become the main. But in tiffany case : she doing a perfect job and she has main vocal abilities. It doesnt matter that she has a hard time hitting the note. All that matters is that she can hit it. And thats how it is in kpop. It doesnt matter what u do to hit it. It just matters that u hit it. Besides as a singer myself there were always times where I had a hard time singing a high note but I still could hit the note. So I'm pretty sure after a while of hitting that note your voice will adjust and after a while it will become easy. Remember everyone singing range can grow.

She did/does not have what it takes to be a main vocalist, saying this about Seohyun would be reasonable, but Tiffany? The girl can't sing anymore. She strains every single note that comes out of her mouth; she sounds like she struggles

The only ppl that think singers sound perfect all the time are the ones who think those fake lip sync perfs are real. Hell even Taeyeon struggled when she promoted FINE. Almost every live sounded like her throat was splitting. All singers have bad eras with the great ... Tiffany's flawless performances in the video proove u wrong anyways so stay delulu and pressed.

@@wewantot8comeback251 Well Taeyeon was sick and the hate affected her a lot, Tifanny has a beautiful voice and could easily be on the level of Taeyeon and Jessica, but her technique is just bad (and this is coming but from someone who isn't a singer or study music, but I have friends who sing and i really saw a lot of debates about this) I don't know if she changed today and is better but her technique just hurt her vocal chords, sometimes she can't hold the note because of breathing or probably sore throat, and she sometimes shouts her high notes. I listened her first album and is so much better than anything she did with SNSD (singing wise) it just fits her voice and isn't out of her range

You're right, both tiffany's and jessica's fans that pit each fandom against the other should be ashamed of themselves, they obviously have very different singing tones and above all they're different humans, how can they be expected to sing in the same way the audience wants 🧐

they can actually just distribute Jessica's lines in two section, the soft cutie tone required lines should go to Sunny, and the powerful parts should go to Tiffany

I love tiffany's versions especially Divine, She's my bias, but those parts where made for Jessica's tone , and OT9 forever 😭😭😭💖

Well, since Jessica supports F#3-C5 (D5) and Tiff F#3-Bb4 (B4), it’s obvious that Tiff will struggle to do high notes that for Jess are easier. However, when Tiff is around a middle-low range, she does fine.

I prefer Tiff version, cuz she has such confidence and power in singing it live T_T but credits to Jessica for having a version of low and sweet tone, but I really love how Tiffany made it more engage and exciting to hear, I feel all the energy and confidence through it, makes me jam even more to the beat, and I didn't even realize how she made it while belting.

Both Tiffany and Jessica are great vocalists. Since early debut era, in my opinion, before Seohyun receive more lines and her vocals became stronger, I always think Jess Tiff and Taeyeon are the OG best vocalists in Snsd. It is fact that Jessica’s presence in some Snsd songs are so strong like eg Paparazzi as u said; however Jess and Tiff has different vocal characteristics. Tiff is bolder, stronger, while Jess tend to be sweet and soothing. I believe it is never easy for Tiff to replace Jess’s parts remembering the difference between their vocal’s characteristics as well, but if she’s put to replace her in most songs for the powerful notes, it must be for a reason 💁‍♀️ and Tiff did so well in her own way. She doesn’t copy 100% Jess’s style and that’s actually good for Sone like me bcs I’m like having the 2 versions of the songs now, in which both are good... just different.. but not at all in a bad way,, u know Like totally agree w/ u in All my love is for you, Jess’s vocal really matches the song... meanwhile in The Boys Tiff vers, u can’t deny the swag and it’s like a totally different song for me, ahahah. Anw in my opinion both girls did great.. fans who bully/criticize Tiffany can’t even sing as good as her right ;)

This is what is so amazing about Tiffany, her undying energy, love, and presence on stage. She may not the best dancer or vocalist in SNSD but is definitely the one with the most consistent stage presence.

The divine one was amazing! Tif has a completely different voice comparing to Jess. Jess has a sweet, light voice, whereas Tif has a heavy gawky voice. However, tif’s skill is really good, and her cover of Jess was somehow great. Because tiff’s voice was different, everyone throwing hate left n right to her. Plus point: I really TIFF’s falsetto so much.

I love these analysis so much and 100% agree with your take on The Boys. Sica did really great with the majority of her lines but man The Boys Tiffany version is something I wished we had more off. Tiffany had the rawness to it, the grunt and slight unstable delivery yet sounded so good because of how confident she delivered it while having fun. I love that in a singer, take it, have fun with it and make it your own.

You should put all Tiffany covers. She received so much hate since 2014. Tiffany unlike other idols who singing live with a bad vocals. Her covering in Galaxy Supernova was a good point.

That’s because they had the same vocal coach, that’s why they sound similar because their techniques are the same. While Tiffany, I believe she was coached by a different teacher ^^

This is the most objective video I've seen about their two voices. I hate those fans that always want to talk bad about Tiffany's performances after Jessica's departure, both girls have heavenly voices and even though some songs suited one of them more than the other it doesn't mean the other didn't do a good job making her own version. Jessica's voice sound smooth and sweet while Tiffany's voice is strong enough to kill the haters, both of them truly are best vocalists with different style of singing. You may sound unfamiliar with tiffany cover but she did a great job and sound very good.

Jessica covering the iconic line "DJ, put back on" sounded so wrong. She did not make any mistake, her voice was on point but this line is owned by Tiffany. You can't hear it without thinking about Tiffany and her eye smile. All of this shit why Tiffany's sounds horrible is because Jessica's gone for good from SNSD. I suprised that actually I agree with all of your opinions. Both did great job in their way. It will always be strange for me not to hear Sica's voice in particular songs but we can't change that. First of all THANK YOU so much for doing this!! I’ve been waiting for so long to make a point about Tiffany’s vocal potential and I’m gonna leave this here; Tiffany Young CAN cover Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, Adele, Mariah Carey and so many other amazing voices anytime anywhere! And that’s FACTS. Her live covers are all out there online. Also I believe we haven’t seen her entire potential yet because her voice is too versatile, she really should get credit for singing and make her covers which sounds better than the actual official songs. Also I’ve always think that Tiffany should have been a Main Vocalist in SNSD, Seohyun as well. Glad that TTS re defined them as main vocalists. Also another point; Yes Tiffany made a lot of coverage of Jessica’s parts, but hypothetically talking jessica could never cover Tiffany’s parts, not even Taeyeon in my opinion, and this doesn’t mean they aren’t great singers, obviously they have an unique color, but Tiffany’s style fulfills the stage more for some reason. And I think covering her parts must be really difficult, I remember how empty RDR sounded when she couldn’t perform back in the day. Maybe it's all about preference... To me, I love Tiffany's voice character way more than Jessica's since the first time I listened to SNSD. Idk why I always feel worried (I don't know a proper word for this tbh hehe) when hearing Jessica sings the high notes. But anyway...they sing very well in the group!

At first im about to throw everythings out if the boys doesnt count and in the end im like IKR WOHOOO SOMEONE'S AGREE WITH ME. And divine of course she's really killin it with that emotion and makes me want to cry more but if Jessica had a chance to sing it live maybe she will get me out of tears in my room. But really u should take a look at how Tiffany did it in a concert where they all wearing white fur outfits (the boys) . And don't get me wrong ladies i'm a big fan of Jessica and Tiffany (im a JeTi trash actually) in case you don't know...
