    I have owned Suzuki DF outboards since 2000. "Just happened to be on a boat that I liked". Many hrs on both fresh and salt water. Not one major failure. Maintenance costs are low around $200 annually. I do the maintenance myself. Love the torque for the hole shot. Its unbelievably quite. It gets excellent fuel consumption and the top end is superb. I currently have a 2014 21' Stryker Hard Top "Aluminum fishing boat" with a Suzuki DF115. It's top speed is 47 mph with three people a dog and all our gear. At top speed it gets 3.89 mpg. At a cruzing speed of 20 it gets 7.5 mpg. With all that gear, it will plane from dead stop in 6 seconds. I will admit I haven't owned a Yamaha or Mercury but I have friends that own both Y and M 115hp outboards. They spend a lot of time in the shop the Yamaha with lower unit problems and the Mercury with water in the oil both with less hours than my Suzuki. They can't match the Suzuki for top speed or hole shot. Im not particularly brand loyal but if it works why change? I know nothing about the Evinrude other than I Know Suzuki makes Evinrude four strokes.

    Was at the Seattle Boat Show. Pretty much all the boat BUILDER'S gave the best advice I've heard. There are a lot of Merc and Yama shops. Parts are available everywhere. When it comes to Honda and Zuki fewer repair shops mean less accessable parts. They are right. Nearest Zuki shops is a 4 hr drive North or South. Local Honda shop doesn't stock lower unit parts. I'll stick with Merc or Yami. How much power do you really need?

    At 169 litres/hour ~80 US gal. @ US $2.25/gal. that is $180.00/hour fuel consumption-that’s nuts! So, at even a more economical speed-say, half throttle-a day on the water (6 hours) would arguably be a $500 day before you’ve even bought beer. That works out to some seriously expensive fish by the end of a day’s fishing.

    They are nice. The pro xs 250 is on my buddies center console, sounds great and did well in the lake. But he started having random issues with it once in the ocean. I went from 300 verados to df350s. I love them, don't care for speed or just name brand alone. My childhood friend recommended these engines to me and he's a certified mercury mechanic. I've gotta another boat with twin mercury 200. They need some love but I want to either swap for the df 300 or pro xs 300.

    Had 2004 df140 on 22pathfinder, bought from close friend with 400 hours! Meticulously maintained prior to purchase! I used probably 3 years 300 hours or so! Local mobile tech did my service!! Offshore trolling one day low oil alarm!! Limp home!! Traces of oil (white creamy mix) coming from vent hole below anti-cavitation plate on gearcase!! Phoned service tech and he says possible gear oil issue/leak!! Went to flush engine, upon starting noted oil mixed with cooling water coming through prop hub! Short story long! Entire engine cooling passages and head were totally destroyed from corrosion! Engine oil was being discharged through the cooling passages!! Engine was removed and scrapped! Hull and trailer sold! Supposedly Suzuki " Had " some issues with alloys!! Haha!! Would not buy again!!!

    @@annteve so it is now June 2023 and in Australia that fuel bill would be in excess of $370 per hour. Our regular unleaded is $2.10 per litre or $8.33 per US gallon. And that's from a service station, not a marina which costs quite a lot more. I was in New Zealand same time last year and paid over $3.10 per litre of unleaded. In the middle of our lockdowns unleaded dropped below $1.00 per litre. Crazy times.

    High compression means breakdowns and reduced longevity. The sea is a harsh mistress. Speaking of longevity, I've always wondered how well the joystick controlled engines steering gear holds up. Stuff has to take a beating.

  • @trevorgains868

    @trevorgains868

    Higher compression does not mean higher breakdowns if you refer to a naturally aspirated gas automotive engines I dont argue. But with the Introduction to direct injection you can run get higher compression with lower octane fuel without detonation or burning pistons due to improper air fuel. Carbon will be the issue these engines will have issues with such as newer high performance automotive designs have been facing due to direct injection.

    I agree. The hp war between manufacturers cause more problems and more costs not only up front but in the long run as well. Everything is put under greater stress. I like the Yamaha F225, F250's. Run on 87 octane and get the job done.
