The Genesis One rifle is made in Gympie, Queensland, Australia by Ron Owen. It is being made at the time of this review in 223 Remington, 243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor and 308 Winchester. There are similar Australian made rifles like the Taipan, Wedgetail Industries, Warwick WFA and Oceania Precision. I had some likes and dislikes with the rifle but overall it is built like a tank and shot 3 shots into 0.6" @ 100 yards using OSA ammo loaded with 55gr Sierra Game King projectiles.

You might think it ugly, it is a bit scary though. If my corridor got invaded by Zombies or Wild Boars, in the bush, with a proper Tactical Sight it comes to sight at the right hight with correct eye sight height and relief, spot on, without looking all over, to place the dot correctly, saving time. Spot on for me. It might be fussy for the right ammo, but a 1in10 twist means heavier ammo can be used because of greater bullet bearing surface. I don't think it ugly. It looks just right for the scrub,l with it's short heavy barrell not catching branches, and in tight scrubby corners it'll knock of game, as your eye, when set up, correctly falls right on the dot and target. Suggest you use "Red Dot Tactical Sights" instead of Optical Target Scopes. Good shooting. :)

Looked to be a very reliable simple desighn, pit about the nerf quality stock, silly pattern, poor trigger, raised piccatinny, and chonky proportions. It would be very easy to vastly improve this firearm and i hope they take all of the constructive criticism on board. None of the Australian firearm manufacturers have got close to a 10 out of 10 i hope this changes soon.

Some of the things like the trigger guard I'd definitely agree could be improved as well as the mag release. The weight doesn't bother me but I've carried a full wood 303 plenty including running in the bush. In fact I'd go for heavy profile barrel even for big days in the bush. That's just me though.

The weird thing is there's no technical reason for the weird raised pic-rail on the receiver. (The castle-nut catch could easily be on the underside or at the side.) The chunky but tubular BCG is lower profile than a Warwick square-profile, or Taipan or Wedgie with a pump-rod, and of course there's no DI 'gas-key' or even AR-charging-handle as a reason to have it so awkwardly high and out of alignment with the forestock top pic-rail. At least get rid of the pointless dot-pattern (unless Ron's trying to be 'indiginous', it does nothing except trap mud) and at least cut some gripping-cuts in the equally pointlessly oversized magwell so you can grab the sides of the mag not just stress the floorplate.

I'm hearing the term "built like a tank" a lot with this rifle. Kinda glad the rifles I own are built more like rifles than tanks... on account of the lack of tank-like duties they need to perform. I get that it is built solid, but at the cost of such a high weight... i'll stick to other rifles. Great to see another Aussie made rifle, but I'm just not sure what market this on is aimed at. Too heavy for field shooters, not accurate enough for precision shooters (although that could possibly be improved with handloads). Pretty sure the tackicool crowd wouldn't go for it.

This is 100% spot on. I don't know what place in the market exists for this rifle. It's not going to be the first choice for field shooters as it's too heavy, it's not suitable for precision shooters due to the trigger /accuracy and the tactical crowd won't want it because of its inability to take pmags and its ergonomics. The only way I can see them successfully marketing it is maybe as a jack of all master of none for the rare person that wants to do a bit of everything but only wants one rifle.

It looks like a prototype of something intended to look more streamlined in final production, almost as though they gave up and just went with what they had. Maybe just a good bash up truck gun that won't break but time will tell. The price is definitely more realistic for what it is though. Oh and anyone that uses firearms in cold weather will hate it.

I bought one in 308. It is for target shooting so the weight for me is an advantage. It weighs a bit less than a M14 or SLR and with the left side cocking handle brings back many memories. I like that the mags are very cheap as in $40 odd rather than $200 each and there will be higher capacity ones available shortly I am told. I will also be buying the pump action conversion when it is released in a few months. I looked at the opposition in 308 and there were all 3-4 times the price. I remember the early AAAs and LD T2s were a bit weirdo looking too.

I’m an MSR fan. I’m also a fan of things made in Australia. We don’t have enough of them and the fact that some states have an appearance law actually makes me a bit sad. However, that rifle needs so much shit shaved off it it’s ridiculous. The lower, what’s going on there, is it a billboard? The forend needs m-lok and to be extended to fit the barrel. Especially for the 16inch model. And that big square chunk hanging off the pistol grip back strap/ comb whatever… that would snap me in so many ways lugging it’s heavy arse out in the bush I’d be inclined to bury it if my hands weren’t covered in blisters. I’m sorry but that’s not a very appealing rifle. But yeah. It shoots, cool.

I would put money on it Having that lower made like this is the only way to get it past most states scary AR look I had a WFA.1 here in Tas after 14 months they cancelled the registration for it & band it here just on the looks of it. At the time I spoke to the firearms board & was told if it was stolen or someone was walking around in public with it the police only have seconds to react so if they thought it was a semiautomatic they would shoot to kill. So to save anyone getting killed because it looks like an AR they just put all this type in the Appearance laws! Which I still think is crap because the registration of each firearm to the owner is easy to check on their systems if an issue come up🤷🏻‍♂️

Thumbs down for me, especially at that price. It’s the exact opposite of a CZ600 trail.

Not gonna be wearing gloves with this thing. Bit odd to not have a threaded muzzle and that inbuilt pic rail means no easy MBUS which is just odd (just make it a single rail and let people buy the rings they need). No MLOk or other modern rail mounts is all strange, seems like a gun design for like the late 80s. Hopefully if there's a Mk2 there can be some streamlining of that lower.

Yeah... The aussie gun industry is in trouble if this is the "innovation"were bringing to market. Sorry boys, but why are we building another (uglier) warwick. If you wanted a straight pull, why not make something that fit a rem 700 footprint that was compatible with all the aftermarket chassis's and nice triggers.... that would have been cheaper, easier and and a home run. Worst case, why not use an AR style lower, and design your own upper. Go have a look at what Q is doing and see if you can out innovate them. Would love to support Aussie, but this isn't what the market wants.

utterly hideous. i wouldn't be seen in the same general vicinity as one. that being said, i'm a blued steel and walnut guy, so my judgement on all these new tacticool guns is the same - that being that i don't like them at all. still, great to see another Aussie made rifle and hopefully we can have some more Aussie companies in the future releasing rifles too.

Dear Aussie firearm makers, please stop with the wannabe AR style straight pulls for thousands and just make reliable bolt action rifles that aussies can buy. We cannot have semi autos so move on from making expensive copies. Make common calibre bolt actions with 5 and 10 round magazines with a rail installed and be done with it. Nothing against ozzie's review but there to many compromises with copying a design we can't own.

We already have a wealth of guns that do exactly that like any gun on Earth. However the AR clones are subject to import restrictions hence why we have these local manufacturers.

Aussies can’t compete with high volume gun makers from overseas so their best chance at building at sustainable market is with niche rifles….. like AR clones for all the guys that like that sort of thing.

Since when has PPU been "quality ammunition"?

I think it's actually good for a manufacturer to quote half MOA with budget ammo. Too many manufacturers quote half MOA only with the most elitist most expensive match grade ammo.

@@jeremymcadam7400 well I didn't say that it is crap in EVERY rifle, I simply pointed out that it is NOT considered "quality" ammo by any stretch. I'm aware that some people have great results with it, but having worked in my LGS, I'm also well aware that probably 95/100 people have crap results and use it only for initial sighting/plinking/when other ammo isn't available, especially some of the older, harder to find calibres. No hate per se, just an observation. If you get good results, even better for you since PPU is just about the cheapest stuff around so you're saving money. Happy shooting.

That's one bloody ugly rifle. Not a fan. Poor ergonomic design, the entire "lower" section is just clumsy. Great to see some new rifles to market here, but yeah, they've got to rethink this design.
