    Cranes, pulleys, weigh-lifts etc often use this technique, where something is first mechanically lifted to a high height, and then allowed to descend gravitationally over a period of time, thereby using that gravitational potential to use the energy later. It's become a very popular way to store energy. E.g. when a region has high wind, for example, and a windmill, but not all that energy is used at the time. The excess energy can be used to lift a load (could even be water!) to a higher level/reservoir. Then, say months later, when wind levels are low, one can allow the weight/water to descend and power a turbine while all that mass descends again... Have a look at pumped storage hydroelectricity!

    Any object wants to fall down. Here, we reduce/control the rate of falling by adding a weight and attaching it to a string wound around a stick. This causes friction and slows down the descent

    Is the kinetic energy from the bottles spinning ? cuz my bottles cant spin

  • @ThinkTac

    @ThinkTac

    Жыл бұрын

    The bottles fall down due to gravity. And anything that moves is said to have kinetic energy. Is that what you are asking? If your bottles aren't spinning, then reduce the weights, or the turns on the string, or the type of string. You have to minimise the friction between string and stick to ensure spinning, but you still need some friction to ensure there's no slipping!

    Purely for aesthetic value, to see something rolling down nicely, and which can be inserted into the skewer. You can try with any other appropriate material; explore and vary: that's the main idea of ThinkTac TACtivities.

    Conversion of energy from potential to kinetic. And also frictional force between the string and the skewer preventing any slippage... More turns and it will stop rotating altogether!

  • @ThinkTac

    @ThinkTac

    That's for you to make and tell us! Anything that is at a height and let loose will fall, right? What is it in this case that is helping it to fall? What is kind of slowing down its fall? Does the weight matter, i.e. the tension in the string? What about the type of string, or how many times it is wound around the skewer? What is the force between the thread and the skewer?

    The energy is converted from gravitational potential energy to kinetic energy. The fly wheel is pulled down by the earth (gravity) which causes it to move down and make the bottles move as well. Remember energy of movement is kinetic energy

    Straws are used as ducts in the cardboard holes so that the threads can be nicely placed in them without too much friction being caused. Small pieces of stiffer straw are ideal

    That's where you'll have to adjust the thread and loops such that it comes down by itself. Using different thread, or looping it a fewer number of times, helps in reducing friction so that it comes down more easily. Also try reducing the hanging weight, and make sure your flywheel is nice and symmetrical and not biased to one side
