Energica Experia vs Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE | Electric or Petrol Touring Motorcycles?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We put the new Energica Experia electric touring motorcycle up against the Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE Grand Tourer.
It’s the new kid on the block versus the old grizzled veteran, 'David versus Goliath', it’s electric versus petrol!
Having ridden the Experia on the launch in Italy and the Versys as his 2022 long term bike, Alex runs us through the key touring points on both machines, and will attempt to find a winner at the end… but the question is, which is the better touring motorcycle? Can electric do enough to win against tried and tested petrol?

The versys can easily get you 1000km in a day on nothing but petrol and coffee breaks. The electric one can take you maybe 500 if you are prepared to spend nearly half your day twiddling your thumbs next to a charging station. Yo u need to plan your route to pass charging stations...(the little beautiful mountain villages of Europe aren't known for their fast charger network btw) the capacity and infrastructure of electric bikes aren't even close to sufficient for a long tour through the mountains of Europe. Claiming it even comes close to a versys should require you to do a 1500mile trip with a buddy on the versys and you in the Energica. Spoiler alert it will suck for both off you since the Versys rider will be waiting for you to be road ready for hours a day🤣

It really depends. 500 mile days in remote locales, the Versys gas usage works best. More leisurely touring in areas with CCS chargers (most of USA and lower Canada) doing about 300-450 miles a day - then the Experia offers a real EV alternative. Sure not perfect and route compromises are necessary, but personally, my wife and I, rarely do more than 300 miles a day - like to take it easy and enjoy the locale.

@@OrlandoRick 1000 km in a day, easy on the Versys (I've done it on my ZRX1200 and 900 km on my Versys 650). Being honest how long would it take on the EV? At least 2 days I'm sure. In Australia you would run out of power somewhere and not come across a charging station or it would be out of order, or it would be in use with a line up. Give it 20 years, maybe.

@@MaverickAus 1000 km? That's 621 miles right? Assuming 160 miles that would be four legs. You leave charged, so three charging stops. So about 12-ish hours of riding plus 3 1-hour stops. So 15 hours? Doable, even if I would not want to. My personal comfort limit is about 400 miles a day (Orlando to Key West). My ass can't take much more and I get tired. ;-) But in the Australian wilderness, of course the right vehicle would be gas-powered. The infrastructure isn't there yet. Not sure about 20-years... wasn't Australia the first to test CCS stand-alone diesel-powered charging stations to see how they would setup electric corridors? They seem to be thinking ahead down there.

Volts is tension, not power. Absolutely love the instant torque and regen braking...all by the roll of the throttle.....no ice bike can delivery that, which is the reason im very surprised about your engine rating. When travelling with an EV you keep it between 10%-80% because charging above 80% is significantly slower. In that window the Experia charges in 25-30mins.....perfect for a coffee and a pee.

Very good and carefully done comparison! I think your handling and fun factor grades really points out the key secret of electric motorcycles -- they simply ride better and offer more pleasure in the twisters. No heat, no gears, on-demand torque and regen. Good calls overall. I hope to get my Experia (on order) this December. In the U.S. the price difference is less than half than what you have in the U.K. We also have a 10% government rebate on the Energica, making them much closer in price.

3:50 Please don't measure 'power' in volts... That is totally incorrect. (Electrical) power is measured in watts, and is the product of voltage and current. I am also perplexed you just glared over the most obvious issue with electric motorcycles, namely the fueling. Everywhere you go you can find petrol, but good luck finding electric charging points whilst you do your touring, especially in non-northwest European countries, smaller towns, etc. All of the other points just don't matter if you have 'charging anxiety' or have to adjust/plan your route to the availability of fast charging... You lose all the freedom which is exactly what makes motorcycles so great. Additionally, what about that horrendous charging time, especially twice a day. Their '420km range' is quoted at 100% charge (i.e. charging times become even longer than their quoted at 'city' speeds and quickly drops to just about 210ish km with normal riding. Doing 600km in a day is nothing special for true touring, which would mean two times charging during the day (and 1 charge over night wherever you stay). Plus the range will only get worse with time when the batteries degrade. I am an electrical engineer, and I love progress, but the whole concept of electric motorcycles for touring doesnt make sense to me with current technology. Currently I feel electric is doable if you live in a city and use it for commuting, but trying to do touring with an electric motorcycle is quite frankly daft. Unless you count a trip to the next city over as 'touring'. As for the price of electricity, for that 10k pound extra, even with todays terrible gas prices, I can get 5400 liters of petrol. That's enough for roughly 135k km... I am sure if you have driven that many km on the energica, you are way past the 1200 cycles life time of the battery, which is undoubtedly an expensive replacement. So no, versys is still a vastly cheaper option even if you take into account fuel.

While touring with an electric bike is a different experience, it can make sense for some people. Most will want to stick with combustion though. Zero DSR owners have ridden across multiple continents. It is a different experience, allowing more time to see things along the way. Bicycle touring does this as well, to an even greater degree, and of course some people have ridden across continents on their bicycles. I would not consider any of that to be daft. It can be very fun and memorable experience. As for the battery life, note that even at 210 km range, traveling 135,000 km is only 643 cycles of the 1200 cycle rating.

Compare the actual range riding 2-up with luggage at 70 mph. That Experia wouldn't make it more than 100 miles. EV range is like fools gold. It promises way more than it delivers and you better read the fine print disclaimer. Take published EV range and divide in half and that becomes usable range without special restrictions. Unlike EV my Versys does not lose any power as the fuel level approaches reserve and at that point I still have another 40 miles to spare. Rarely is there ever a situation where the next fuel stop is further than 20 miles away. With EV out in rural area if you're not careful you are likely to have to cower up to someone's door to ask permission to plug-in. If approached such homeowner should state. "Sure for $150 or you better call for a tow."

Fair play to the electric bike being so close to the Kawasaki. Unfortunately, at £10,000 more it is just too far away on price. Maybe at £5,000 more, it would be a very close call. Still a valiant effort for an EV.

In the U.S. when you take into account the 10% U.S. tax credit for EV bikes; they are both almost the same price $19k Versys, Energica $23,750 - $10% tax credit or $21,500-ish. That's a $2,500 or so price difference between both bikes. On top of that, some states have additional EV incentives that may lower the effective price difference even more. NOTE: I did this wrong. The Versys is actually closer to $20k w/ Trunk here and the Experia with bags (Launch Edition) is more like $26k. So the price difference is actually more like $4k. Still lower than the UK though.

@@OrlandoRick Wow! Good deals in America.... In the UK the government has pulled all of its EV incentives. No tax credits either. Ferk all...!! It used to me around 2,000 incentive in 2021.... Clearly they know that the infrastructure in UK is totally shit.... So they want to slow down the purchases of all EV's. To late... As car EV's are everywhere. No-one in UK will have money for a £27,000 bike as our petrol prices has nearly doubled in the last 12 months. Gas & Electricity has increased by 300% and is due to hit 400% before Christmas!! Food bills have also doubled in 12 months. So the average person is on their knees heading towards being bankrupt....

  • @ddennis669

    @ddennis669

@@OrlandoRick I agree the price in the states is closer. Energica lists the Experia Launch Model at $25,880 and the Versys is $18399 (without the $298 rear trunk, so $18,697). This puts the pre-freight/delivery charge and pre-tax price difference at $7,183. Much less than the £10,000 GBP listed in the video (I think that would be over $12,000 USD at this time). For those not in the USA and curious, delivery costs and taxes can vary significantly in the USA, based on locality. Regarding the Incentives, I believe the US Federal Tax Credit ended after 2021 and the renewal was included in the never passed "Build Back Better" legislation, having been rejected by Senator Manchin. However, if you are in California you may still be able to find an after tax reduction of $2500. I think we still have the California Clean Fuel Reward of $750 and the Clean Vehicle Rebate Program may bring the price down by another $750 (although the Experia is not specifically listed yet). Some local utilities have a $1000 tax rebate for EV motorcycles (in the San Joaquin Valley, the Central Coast and possibly others regions). For me and some other Californians, that makes the difference only $4,683. Additionally we have really expensive gasoline prices and DC Fast Chargers are generally within range. Depending on the the cost of electricity vs. gasoline and the savings in maintenance costs, I could anticipate a break even point on the total cost of ownership somewhere between 30,000 and 50,000 miles. This puts more weight on the other performance based issues the video address. I am looking forward to the adventure of seeing where I can go with an EV.

Your statement about minimal price difference if paid in monthly statements is completely false. A 10K difference in price equates to 800 per year in payments at at 8% finance rate. That difference will buy you about 500 liters of fuel that equals about 10K km per year on the Versys. Then the added depreciation expense of the Experia considering the battery warranty is only 3 years. Who in right mind will buy one used except at enormous discount. EV motorcycles are for those who can't ride much more than an hour before they start craving more soy and quality time on their mobile device to falsely pronounce how they are saving the world from global climate change catastrophe.
