CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Zaitsev (Jude Law) and Koulikov (Ron Perlman) must cross a dangerous gap as they exit a war-torn building.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A turning point in 20th century war history is the focus of this fact-based account of the 1942-1943 battle of Stalingrad, in which the Germans were finally defeated by Russian influence -- one of the bloodiest battles in World War II history. The film stars Jude Law as Vassili, a marksman from the Urals who is transported to Stalingrad in 1942, and a master German sniper, Major Koenig (Ed Harris). Koenig, an expert German sniper, is determined to eliminate his formidable opponent by any means necessary; meanwhile, Vassili has joined forces with Danilov (Joseph Fiennes), a young Russian political adversary, who is impressed by Vassili's skills and raises his profile in the Soviet Union. Both Vassili and Danilov become involved with Tanya (Rachel Weisz), whose Jewish parents have been captured by the Germans and have forced her to take up with the men on a sniper expedition. Koenig and Vassili begin to develop traps for each other, until fate inevitably must bring the two sharpshooters together. This large-scale production, financed mostly by Teuton companies, also features Bob Hoskins as Nikita Krushchev and Ron Perlman as an aging Russian sniper.

    The whole idea of "going first" is that the enemy is startled and has no time to shoot the first guy, so he aims for the man behind him. Vasily was shaken up because Koenig got him even though he went first. An "impossible shot."

    You realize this film was made in the 90's? This ukraine business has been brewing for literally 30 years. Ukraine is the battleground between the western elites and russian elites. Zelensky is just stooge actor to illicit support from western plebs to want war. The wst knew they could use Ukraine, because the people who identify as Ukrainians, which is an ethnicity really only dating back 100 years as a splinter of the Russian ethnicity, hate russia. So the west knew they could build a dirty money laundering nation, that has heaps of oil and coal and food, with a populace who hates their neighbour, and build internal terrorist paramilitaries, and set up labs and other operations that are illegal on our western (UK, Aus, USA, CA) soil. I feel sorry for the common ukrianians for being duped and played for the last century. Being used and abused by both the russians attempting to suppress splinter movements, and the west encouraging them to splinter so they are easy to control.

    Perfect plot: protagonist can only prevail through a combination of great courage and dedication, antagonist error, and a bit of luck. This scene was the perfect set-up to demonstrate the antagonist's perceived invincibility.

  • @J_C_CH

    @J_C_CH

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's also the moment the protagonist starts taking the situation seriously. Before this, he had been treating his fight with Koenig as just another mission, joking around with his buddies and generally acting dead relaxed. After his professional partner is suddenly killed via an impossible shot, he realises just how bad it is and begins taking it a lot more seriously. You'll notice he becomes a lot more serious after this scene.

    In reality ethnic tension was very low in the USSR even with non-Slavic peoples. I say this because 'Ukrainians' werent the grunts, it was those who were not communist party members, IE everyone apart from a few. I say this again because my Ukrainian and Russian ancestors had the exact same experiences. More Ukrainians died because they stood up to the Soviets openly during the 30's refusing to join collective farms. Russians did too but only in the south, because most grain producing areas were in Ukraine and Southern Russia.

    Not sure i understand how the physics of this are supposed to have worked. Why did he fall straight down after he got shot? If he had jumped with enough force to make it across, he would have landed on the other side, dead or alive.

  • @Lesolan

    @Lesolan

    10 жыл бұрын

    Close, but not quite. The round that hit him would have quite the kinetic force behind it. In the end, while he wouldn't have stopped near dead like that, he *would* have been flung sideways, making it so his body wouldn't have gone all the way.

  • @gunterdak

    @gunterdak

    10 жыл бұрын

    Lesolan Not so sure about that. For one thing, the bullet went all the way through his head, meaning that very little of its force was actually transferred to him. And in either case, bullets don't actually have nearly as much energy as they appear to in films. People rarely get 'flung' in any direction when getting shot. If a bullet had that much force, it would have sent the person shooting it flying backwards to.

  • @Lesolan

    @Lesolan

    10 жыл бұрын

    gunterdak Like I said, based on the weapon used, and actual physics, the round that *WOULD* have hit him when in the placement used in the movie. It passed through the skull twice, and the kinetic transfer would still have been great. Not only was his brains scrambled, but his neck would have been broken from the sudden force. Hollywood doesn't do a very good job in portraying real world anything, so basing an argument on it is kind of moot.

    It does look awkward. You could argue though that he got shot before he completed the take off, therefore, he did not have enough energy from this legs to get to the other side. Or, you could argue he did have enough energy to make the jump but no coordination to correctly place his footing to land... so just a bit short because his legs weren't extended for the landing.

All of the other decades as far as the late 60’s-70’s onwards were solid and some of the best movies ever to be made. The 2000’s is some of the best cinema ever and practical and special effects I’m so shocked how it dipped and so much crap started getting made from the next decade onwards its rarely now you get a blinder

    +superherofan24 Think it through for a moment. You're supposed to pretend that they ARE speaking Russian, but that you the viewer, are also a Russian speaker, so you understand what is being said. The best way to pretend that this is the case is to have the actors speak English...Is that really so difficult to understand? And why would you have the actors speaking with Russian accents. That actually doesn't make sense, if you think about it. A Russian speaking Russian to another Russian speaker doesn't have "a Russian accent". To the other person his speaking voice is neutral. So, yes, an English actor, speaking English, unless he puts on a phony Russian accent, will naturally sound English. The only alternative, if you are looking for absolute realism, is to have the actors in the Russian roles speak Russian and the actors in German parts, such as Ed Harris, speak German, using English subtitles for both. But that would interrupt the "flow" of the film, constantly having to take your eyes of the images on screen to read the subtitles below...Would you really prefer that?

  • @lorddaver1935

    @lorddaver1935

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Peter Burtch I didn't say it was hard to read subtitles, did I?? It is just, in my view, distracting to have to take your eyes off the action of screen to read the subtitles every few seconds. What is wrong with simply pretending that the actor and you, the viewer, both understand, and speak Russian?

  • @SalvableRuin

    @SalvableRuin

    8 жыл бұрын

    +lord daver I mostly agree with you, but I honestly prefer subtitles. I find that reading subtitles is more immersive and convincing because the actors are speaking the language they are supposed to be speaking. I don't mind if they speak English and we just pretend they are not, but I find that takes me out of the film just a little more than subtitles.

  • @lorddaver1935

    @lorddaver1935

    +뿡뿡! ^__^ But the alternative, having the film made as a Russian speaking film (with Russian actors, to state the obvious) would result in the film not being made at all. The studios would find it impossible to access funding for a film intended primarily for the American and British market, without internationally known actors. How many internationally famous Russian actors do you know?

    +MexicanGamer702 Did you also complain that the actors in Les Miserables weren't speaking French?

    +MexicanGamer702 What accent do you think they should have, Russian? So the whole cast would have to be coached to speak with Russian accents. Most people, even actors, would find it difficult to maintain an authentic Russian accent throughout the course of a film. The chances are that such an approach would result in the film becoming an unintended comedy...On the other hand, are you suggesting that it would somehow be OK if they had an American accent? The only possible alternative would be to drop all the English speaking actors and replace them with genuine Russian speaking actors (using sub-titles). The trouble with that approach, of course, is that without world famous actors, the film wouldn't get made at all. Any other suggestions?
