Endurance Ride Season 2010 -- Gaited Endurance Horse
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Quite a Sugarfoot is a registered Tennessee Walking Horse doing the endurance circuit. We just completed the 2010 Endurance Ride Season with 305 LD miles for the season, our best season yet! We saw so much beautiful country during our travels so I decided to compile photos & video of our 2010 ride season in the AERC's Mountain Region. We rode at the Antelope Island Ride, UT; Wyoming Pioneer Ride, WY; Bighorn Ride, WY; Antelope Butte Ride, WY; Happy Jack Ride, WY & Moab Canyons Ride, UT and had an absolutely fabulous time! So many wonderful memories! We will be doing some 50 milers in the 2011 ride season. Enjoy the video!

Way to represent the Walkers! ABSOLUTE BEST horses I've ever ridden!
Loved the video thanks for sharing. I love seeing other parts of the country and watching this video was a great way to get rid of the no riding, cold weather, deer season, blues.
That is so very cool. Your horse is lovely and I am jealous of all the beautful places you get to ride. What an amazing experience. God Bless. Hope you enjoy thousands of more miles together.
What a great (and inspirational!) video. Thanks so much, Laurie.
I'm in ♥ with endurance and my horse :)
Just think, you're the only one on a comfortable horse! Ha! Ha! Love to see the gaited horses go on down the trail. That's the way to trail ride.
Wonderful video! I own 4 TWHs - two black, of course! We spend a lot of time in Black Hills and Big Horns trail riding and camping. Thanks for making such a wonderful video!
I've been using the Clinton Anderson Techniques. We've been doing lots of ground training recently along with riding as I feel that ground training is a GREAT way to get your horse's respect. And you REALLY need respect from your horse when you are on the ground (or anytime) at the endurance rides. It has worked wonders on Sugarfoot. We are really enjoying the training.
Gaited horses do great in endurance! Don't let anybody tell you otherwise! Us gaited endurance riders would love to have another gaited horse and rider in this sport! You can do it!
I enjoyed your video so much that I just had to share on our Heavens Gait Farm facebook page - we have a great group of horse folks there and since we specialize in Tennessee Walking horses, I know everyone will be interested to see your Quite a Sugarfoot! Perhaps, you will inspire others to get out there and enjoy the glide ride and see this beautiful country! _ Judy Noyes @ Heavens Gait Farm
Thank you so much for this video. I was wondering what job I could give to my rescued morgan/twh horse and think I've found our new discipline. LOVE the natural thing TWH were bred to do!!!
Beautiful horse!
We couldn't get to as many rides this 2011 season as I would have liked due to the economy & gas prices, but even so, I recently learned that Sugarfoot came in 18th place in the Mountain Region Endurance Rides Light Weight Division for 50 mile rides! We made the top 20! Yeah for Sugarfoot!! The Mtn. Region encompasses WY, MT, ID, UT & parts of SD. I'm so proud of her!
great video of great friends , awesome !
NEVER give up! If you sumersalt, which we actually did in that point in the video, you don't quit not ride your horse anymore. You get back IMMEDIDATELY on your horse and keep riding! We finished the ride that day! If you fall with your horse or the horse bucks you and you are scared to get back on, the horse wins. Horses are smart like that. Once they think you are scared of them, it is all down hill from there.
Would have liked to have seen more of the gaited horse gaiting.
Love it! Great video
Thanks so much for sharing the video of Sugarfoot and me to other gaited horse people! We show those Arab people we can do endurance, too!
My best endurance horse was the son of a Nooitgedachter filly bred to a quarter horse. This was a short stocky horse, but boy, he had no end. Many times the laughing stock when I arrived, but at the end of the day he was collecting ribbons.
Great video!!
Complete sumersalt for sure! The people riding behind me thought Sugarfoot had rolled on top of me and of wasn't getting up! I did get a bruise on my leg, but fell in a way I didn't get hurt. That ride was REALLY mucky, basalt mud. Besides that, Sugarfoot had caught sight of my husband and mother who were up ahead videoing us. That didn't help as she was transfixed on them instead of where her feet should be going! All's well that ends well!
Looks like a well muscled and very fit athlete to me!
Awwwww I had a walker I did endurance racing with too! Beautiful horse!
WOW! Most probably won't notice it, but that's a STRONG 4 beat in this video! That's a great horse there! I'm wondering how old he/she is.
Nice video! That looks like fun. I wish I could do that with our TWH but it would be too much for her :(
Stop by our Heavens Gait Farm FB page anytime and share photos or news - we love to hear about Walkers doing things other than just in the show-ring and inspire others to try a Tennessee Walking horse for the ride of their life! ~ Judy Noyes @ Heavens Gait Farm
Sorry I haven't given you advice until now! The AERC (American Endurance Ride Confrance) has different regions throughout the nation. It is a GREAT way to get in touch with people in your area, make new friends and RIDE! Don't let anyone talk you out of your rider not being to ride against the Arabs! They can do it! If you are in Southern California. Look into this site (AERC). It is GREAT and explains a lot!!
Nice video
@Jorey1Talent -- A great book to learn more about the sport is called "The Complete Guide to Endurance Riding & Competition" by Donna Snyder-Smith. Do lots of LSD riding (Long Slow Distance). Don't push your horse too soon too fast and when you get to the rides, make sure to "Ride Your Own Ride". This is VERY important. It is very easy to get sucked into somebody else's ride, which will not be enjoyable for you or your horse. Remember, "to finish is to win" and you will have a great time!
Wow, I have a Rocky Mountain horse but figured I could not do endurance riding even though I've always wanted to do that. How does the gaited hold up against the Arabs? Seems like great fun- although that summersault would've scared the crud out of me!
I have a gaited horse and use him for endurance. He finishes in the top 10 every time, because his resting pace is twice as fast as an arabians walk. Gaited horses are bigger boned, and more sturdy. However arabians are made for endurance, so they have the stamina for it, and their heart rates drop really fast. If you're doing 25, 50, or 65 miles, gaited horses are great. But if your doing the tevis cup 100 mile race, arabian breed would be best.
Its great to see walkers doing endurance im looking into doing it next year with my arabian/teneesee walker mare for our first time. Any tips for a newbi? i'd only be doing 25milers.
Wow, you guys have come a long way! I am getting started in endurance as well, but I can't seem to find a training method, what do you use?
Several Tennessee Walkers and a Paso Fino and other gaited horses have finished the Tevis cup. It just depends on the horse, regardless of breed. One year a Rocky Mountain Horse (gaited) came in 26th in the Tevis. This particular horse has completed Tevis more than 1x. Gaited horses can do it. It is just people discourage gaited horses and people believe what they hear.
Hi Sugarfoottevis I wanted to know how does a person get into endurance riding. i live in So Cal and have my first walker...he is amazing can out walk any horse around here and can go..go...go...go. my friends call him energizer bunny he is awesome i have been slowly building him up to more miles but I dont know how to find any other endurance people or where to get started....any advice would be great!!!!
@Starsilver17 I would like to know the answer to that also?
what the heck happend at 1.23 ?? looked like a complete sumersault. hope everyone was okay. my MFT did that with me once and that was enough.
O.K. just look up American Endurance Ride Conference and then your regional divisions, regardless of where in the U.S. you are. If you have problems, don't hesitate to get back to me.
let me see??
She is a little skinny don't you think...
Endurance horses, I guess, are a "little skinny" compared to most horses doing other horse sports or those that are lounging around in a paddock or pasture just for trail riding. Think about human marathon runners. How many of those people would you say look like Arnold Schwarzenegger? None come to mind for me. I'd describe Endurance horses as marathon runners in the horse world.
