Seeing Endeavor actually addressing that he himself is the problem and acknowledging that he damaged the family is honestly making him seem that much more realistic of a character. And remembering the look on his own child’s face and how he loathes him is the first step to fixing himself and his family Edit: thanks so much for the likes! @@aleksamrkela831 I agree, but I feel like with what happens in a future arc, it kind of inadvertently hurts one of the villain's character. SPOILERS If it wasn't obvious enough, Dabi is Endeavor's son. In a future arc that reveals Dabi's story, it kind of harms his character in a way to justify Endeavor. Endeavor's character was a father trying to redeem himself and become a true hero, but in the flashback it makes him out to be like he was always kind of nice but just stern. Since Dabi's "death" and injuries are his own fault, he really kind of loses any justification he had of revenge which kind of messes up his whole reason. For Dabi we could've gotten to see a version of what Todoroki could've become, someone who had been hurt and wasn't saved in any way seeking justified vengeance. But with his backstory Dabi's revenge is unjustified and he becomes basically a regular villain. This isn't to downplay Endeavor's character or anything, I just think if Horikoshi kept it as somewhat abusive in the flashback, like he still kind of forced Toya to overcome his weakness even though he physically couldn't, rather than Endeavor actively trying to stop Toya from training creating a misunderstanding which led to Toya trying to overcome his weakness by himself and blame Endeavor for the consequences. We could've see a more interesting conflict if they kept Endeavor's abusive/evil past, as we would see a redeemed father facing the consequences of his abuse, with his other son who has learned to forgive him. We would understand and sympathize for both sides but know that Endeavor is in the right and that Dabi must lose even if we do understand him. Dabi's character is great too, I just felt like his backstory and tragedy being self-inflicted kind of diminishes the sympathy/empathy we could've had for him. Edit: I love Endeavor's character if that wasn't clear, I just wish they could've kept the abusive part in Dabi's past so we could sympathize with both sides when they face off for the last time as both of them have justified reasons to face off.

And not only that, he truly wants to not only be BETTER, but to really REDEEM himself, not to just himself, but to his family. Horikoshi and MHA are truly incredible to make even a character that we’re supposed to despise be redeemable……..

What I like about this is that Endeavor is not pushy about it. In these shows the character always says something along the lines of "I am good now, why won't you accept me?" But Endeavor is taking it in silence. He knows that there is nothing he can say to make it better. There is nothing Endeavor can do to make it better, it is up to his family to find it in themselves to forgive.

I still can not believe that people sent death threats to Horikoshi for giving Endeavor a Redemption arc. They flat out accused him of sympathizing with abusers, trying to normalize an abusive family, being an ableist, the whole nine yards. I feel like if that were to happen that would undercut a lot of what Horikoshi is doing. Yes, Endeavor is trying to be a better man than he was and atone. But that place at the table? It’s not something he can really earn or deserve, because his family, the people he wronged, are the ones who deserve to decide whether he gets to be a part of their lives now. And no matter how much hard work he puts in, after what he did to them? If one or all of them decide they do not want to sit at a table with him ever again? Then he should not be at that table. The fact that Endeavor recognizes this and respects this shows how far he’s come.

The path to of redemption is never easy. You can be forgiven for far worse actions or you may not be forgiven at all. This isn't a redemption so much as an atonement. I don't think Endeavor will ever be saved from his past or mistakes, even if he does so with his family. The most he can do right now is atone for what he's done to them, since it's the only thing he has any control of. As it is now, death might be his only path to redemption. "I'm not looking for forgiveness. Just atonement."

I love how, knowing nothing about his backstory, readers everywhere only know him as cruel, abusive, terrible as a father. However, Horikoshi introduces his backstory, the circumstances of his relationships, the pieces of the puzzle that set about the circumstances leading to the horrible outcomes, to make him a multifaceted character and one who isn't so 1D to be JUST "cruel, abusive, terrible as a father," because that's not it, not really. Has the man made mistakes? Yeah. But no one is above redemption. Very few people are purely evil, and understanding what happened and where they came from helps make amends.

And, when Horikoshi drew out Dabi's backstory, we see a lot of personality characteristics Toya had as a kid that made him turn out the way he did. Nothing exists in a vacuum. Toya suffered under the neglect his father had for his mismatched constitution, but Toya ultimately chose to become what he did, and Shoto ultimately chose to overcome what he went through to be what he wants to be.

I really wanted there to be some sort of blind angle to Endeavor and the family's rift, like yeah his training was Spartan but not as bad as people made it seem. Like Endeavor was actually a really doting Husband, but the mother had an actual mental breakdown unrelated to Endeavors treatment of her. Like she was never talking to anyone on the phone during her attack on Todoroki, the voices finally got to her. IDK maybe something having to do with her freezing Quirk creating the snap, and she burned Todoroki due to this condition. Endeavor pushing to be the #1 hero to outshine All Might but also so he can afford to pay for his wife's ongoing and permanent treatment; always visiting her while no one knew.

  • @vc180191

There is another angle. Unfortunately all the scenes we have seen are legitimate, but the angle is what happened BEFORE these scenes. Everybody knows Rei had a mental breakdown as a result of what Endeavor did, but nobody considers that Endeavour may have had a mental breakdown BEFORE this which led to him becoming the Spartan we know. Endeavour has been mentally unfit for a long time, and it all ties back to the firstborn son, Toya.
