Thank you for making this video, I relate to the topics in it, and it helped me put words to what I was going through. I currently have no relationship with my father, whom Ive only recently realized was abusive (both physically and neglectfully) I have since cut him out of my life, and though I am not ready to forgive him for his actions/inaction, because I watched this video, I can start moving in that direction for my own sake. Thank you @Oceaniz for all the videos you make, you make a difference.

Exactly I love seeing him with his faults and to see him realise hes finally gotten what he wanted for so long and now it means nothing because he didnt earn it and his family is all divided because of the choices he has made. Endeavour realised whats wrong with him and he wants to change and although some people are salty and dont want to see him get better I'm looking forward to the new man he still become.

I feel people have these very strong feelings towards Endeavor because abuse is a common and realistic problem, where as a mass murderer psychopath isn't. This added to the portrayal of abuse being fairly realistic, and the fact that Endeavor is not a villain like in your examples, but is presented as a hero and a protagonist.... yeah I can see why he is so controversial.

It's sad that people cant see the nuance in Endeavour's character. Endeavour's ongoing arc really hit close to home for me seeing that I come from a family of 5. My father verbally abused me often as a child and unnecessarily punished and hit me, with my mom not saying anything to interject. I grew up with so much distaste for my parents I moved out at 18 and it wasnt until I turned 20 last year that my father and mother reached and actually had a heart to heart talk with me, and at that I've never spoken with my parents on a personal level. Them trying to be better and openly care for me was difficult to process at first. It doesnt absolve them of how much they scarred me as a child, but I can't bring myself to hate them these days. I actually have a somewhat healthy relationship with them even though I can't forgive them, I understand them and of course I want to seem them better themselves as people even if for a couple of years I refused to accept there actions of change. They're people, people who were scarred as children too and left incomplete so they lost sight of what it was to parent. Just like endeavor. Him not being redeemable is plain wrong, and you're denying some of the strongest writing in recent memory of humanizing a very flawed person who realized his mistakes. I've been watching your videos for a while, but this one earned my sub and it deserves to go viral. Nice work man

Oh man finally someone said it... As someone who also grew up in an emotionally abusive household, and finally got out 5 months ago... The case of the Todorokis, and yours, hit real close to home. I couldn't have said it better myself. I used to resent my mother so much. To this day I'm still battling the consequences of what happened to me for 17 years. It's true that time won't erase the amount of nights spent crying myself to sleep, but... I'm finally moving past it. I didn't think I would, and I'm so glad I was wrong. There are more important things I can spend my energy on, anyways.

...I'm going to be straight. I like endeavour because I see myself in him. I've been a shit person most of my life. Hurt more people than I think I can say. Left people worse off than I've found them. I can't blame my childhood, my struggles with every substance addiction under the sun, or anyone in my life. I've been a terrible person. Endeavour as a character; doing horrible things, thinking on them, regretting them and trying to solve them. They are what told me 'this is you. This is the scum you are now'. Because I saw myself in Endeavour, I've taken steps to fix my mistakes. I've been drug and alcohol clean for a year now, and I've tried to rebuild my bonds with the people in my life. Some have forgiven me, and others never will. I'm not a good person, but like endeavour, I don't want to stay that way. Edit: thank you for the kind words. It's been two years now, and I've remained completely sober and drug free. I've gotten a paying job in a retail store, and I've started talking to my parents again. I'm getting there Edit 2: I think this is the last time I'll check this comment. My life has gotten as good as I think it should get. I've fixed my relationship with my family, been promoted at my job and I'm in a relationship with a beautiful and smart woman. I know they just seem like comments, but I am so thankful to have gotten so many nice comments from all of you, even though we've never met. Thank you

I never understood how that particular chapter with the family could be interpreted as 'oh now everything's fine. Horikoshi thinks everything is forgivven now' consdering that I think Endeavor ended that chapter saying himself, that he may possible never be nor can he be forgiven, so all he can do is try. None of the characters actually said anything about 'forgiving him' nevermind forgiving him completely. Even Fuyumi I think mostly argues that she doesn't want these things said NOW. She had talked and agreed with her brothers that they wouldn't bring up those things on that particula day, she never demanded of them that Natsuo 'get his shit together and forgive him'. Even when he's gone all she says is that she really hoped they could maybe come together as a family after Endeavor seemingly tryied to reconnect. She doesn't say that Natsuo or Shoto should forgive him nor does she even say that she forgave him herself, I think, she just says that she hoped the family could finally come back together again. In this room there was not a single character not Enji and not the children who actually said or even implied that 'everything was well and forgiven now'.

Ari33sa I never understood what it TAKES to be forgiven, and I *need* (hyperbolic form of “want”; I don’t mean literal “need”) to know; Many things like social privileges like job opportunities, trust, public safety, the mental state of the criminal, etc., depend on the definition of forgiveness, because of how forgiveness is used in sentences, and in punishment/how we treat those that have “sinned”. We can correct people that say “I’m NEVER gonna forgive you !” with a strong definition, and even help people, if not to “forgive”, at least live with the impacts of this “unforgivable” act, whether they’re victims or regretful criminals [Since the definition might be 2), and for good reasons] And I think we take that too lightly or too much for granted when we use it when a kid hurt another kid in the sandbox, where the victim easily *_FORGIVES_* him What about THAT sort of “hurt” ? If it’s “forgetting the past”, then you can’t forgive, but we use the word to determine how we should feel about that certain event So obviously it can’t be THAT; So is “forgiveness”, specifically for traumatic event A : 1) “Being sure(and confortable with the belief) that he’s never gonna do(be; or think like) what he’s done(been; or thought) before ever again (what’s done being A)” ? 2) “Killing the thoughts of hate, distrust or downright, sadistic, revengeful assassination we‘ve had and still have for this person because of what he’s done (i.e. A)” ? 3) “After the _’CORRECT amount of punishment’_ has been done” ? I need the opinion of someone else, and that’ll be really appreciated 👌

@@nicholasleclerc1583 well this is late reply but somehow I found that video again and saw your question... I think you need to make a distinction between 'forgiving somebody' on a personal level, and forgiveness in terms of 'mercy' on a judicial/legal level. Those are two entirely separate issues. In a legal sense (of course, depending on the legal system of the individual country) and I think similarly in a religious (christian, don't know enough about other religions tbh) sense people earn forgiveness or mercy by being repentant. In reality though, in that private sense of forgiving somebody who actually hurt you personally, I think it's not so much about EARNING forgiveness, but about giving it. The deciding factor here is not so much the behavior of the criminal but the mindset of the victim. Of course, there is a certain overlap. In a legal sense, the will of the victim can play a role and of course, privately the behavior of the perpetrator can make a bit different in how willing the victim is to forgive. So even though you're mentioning sentencing in your comment, I guess you're mostly talking about forgiveness in a more personal and private way. And I guess there is no way to properly define it... It's something you give willingly, either for yourself (to maybe let go of hate or to find closure) or because you're actually swayed by the perpetrator's effort to change. I think it has little to do with being sure that something won't happen again. For one I think that's absurd. Everytime we open up to a person we also open up to the possiblity of being hurt. That might even be happen if you don't open up at all. On the other hand you can easily forgive somebody but not open yourself up to them. Of course, this is a bit more difficult if it's a family member, but saying 'I do forgive you for your prior actions, but I want to have my own life now in which you play a diminished roll if at all' is an option. You could even go to an unrepentent criminal and forgive them if you do it for your own peace of mind (or maybe some do it for religious reasons). In that case, the forgiveness is not so much for their sake (as an unrepentant criminal won't care) but for your own, but of course, you can't be sure that they wouldn't want to hurt you again. In most cases though, forgiving would be similar to giving somebody a second chance. And you can never be sure they won't disappoint you. As for your second definition, I think that's almost it... But I also think, there is a step between 'hate/revenge' and 'forgiveness'. I actually think you can move past something without 'forgiving'. As I said, forgiving is something you need to give. It's not just something you do in your mind. In a way, it's an absolution. Something you do not just for yourself but for the other's peace of mind. I think there are plenty of people out there who have moved past a wrong-doing committed against them, but who didn't actually go up to the perpetrator to tell him so. I also think there are people who are well on their way healing and getting past something but who are nonetheless glad that whoever did it to them is rotting away in prison. Definition number three also comes fairly close, I guess. But I think there are plenty of people who forgive somebody before he was properly punished who still think, that he has to suffer his just punishment. Imagine a scenario where during the court case the accused (A) asks the victim (V) for forgiveness and V grants it to A. I'm pretty certain that in most cases V does not mean for A to go free thinking they already suffered proper punishment. I think forgiveness is when you not just don't want to 'torture' (trauma) yourself over something that has happened, but you also don't want the perpetrator to torture (guilty conscience) himself over it anymore. That's why while I think many do it 'for themselves' I think the act of forgiving is ultimately 'for the benefit of the perpetrator'. I think it's a very poetic idea...

Endeavor is a hard character to like. He is an abuser, the type of abuse he inflicted on his family doesn’t matter. He can’t change that. He can, and does, try to seek redemption for his past actions by being a better man and father while also striving to be the best hero possible(admittedly for his own selfish reasons) though even after All Might retires from being a hero, he does his best to protect and inspire people. Do his good deeds and efforts at redemption outweigh what he did to his wife and children? I don’t know, but I think everyone deserves a chance to be a better person than they were yesterday.

Beautifully put together video overall. Honestly you brought up amazing points but one that stuck out to me was about the 'apologizing part' this is actually brought up quite a lot when it comes to Bakugo too. I see those that despise Bakugo despite his slow progress and say 'Well he hasn't apoligized to Deku so it doesn't matter how he changes' and in my head I think, well it's come to a point that apologizing won't help or change anything, and 2) I don't think Izuku considers himself a victim? And I could be wrong about that but he's never blamed Katsuki...so I dunno, I could be completly off! Anyway great great great stuff! So glad you posted!!

Yeah, I've noticed that as well. I don't know if it is just me, but for issues that have popped up in my life, I would much rather see a person's intentions to grow and change rather than a string of words that could just as easily be meaningless. Especially for characters like Bakugo and Endeavor, who prefer to let their actions speak for themselves and stay silent otherwise, it would be grossly out of character for them to just say, "Sorry about that. That was real rude wasn't it?". Even in the lead up to the Pro Hero arc, when it was Endeavor's turn to speak at the Top 10 reveal, he just said, "Watch me."

Honestly My Hero Academia is one of the best written manga and the complexities in regard to Endeavor really highlight that fact. Also I have come to question whether or not Endeavor's marriage was based on wealth to get her quirk. Remember that idea was only brought up by Shoto as he most likely believes that is the case. But since Endeavor remembers something as minor as what kind of flower his wife loves it just makes me wonder. I mean what kind of person would go that far for someone? Something to note is that there is another reason I think Endeavor was upset at All Might retiring. And it was because the moment he say All Might in his weaken state it clicked for Endeavor, that he had a chance to surpass All Might all along. He placed All Might so high above himself and others that the idea of outdoing All Might without using the methods Endeavor carried out never crossed his mind. We see in that moment that Endeavor realizes what a waste it was to put his family through all of that when any goal he had was truly in reach. Another thing I enjoy is how the abuse is carried out, after all too often do we see abuse as simply as smacking a kid around and the other case neglecting them but that's it, nothing deeper. Here we see the abuse on Shoto is for training, Endeavor isn't beating him simply cause he likes beating children but rather to toughen Shoto up to be the best. Like it all seems similar to cases of parents who really push things on kids like raising little girls for beauty pageants or for school when parents have their kids study at all hours of the day with no breaks or time to play. All of which is abusive and gives child more than they can handle. Heck I say Endeavor started training Shoto at that young of an age was to get him started way before the age Endeavor starting doing any of that. To finish off this part with the most interesting point, one of the things that really take interest in Endeavor's dynamic with Shoto is that, Endeavor never really cared what Shoto thought of him. Through the story before hand we see that Shoto makes it clear to his dad that he doesn't like him for all the shit he has been through.... and Endeavor's reaction seems to be not giving a damn about it. Where most abusive parents far more often pose this idea that the child should love them no matter what horrible shit they put their kids through, Endeavor doesn't seem to force that idea onto Shoto. Just that he has to be the best hero ever and ultimately overtake All Might so that Endeavor feels like he won. With Shoto disliking his father in such a way with his dad not caring really puts Endeavor on a path of self-destruction that he is fully aware of but if being hated by his family lets him top All Might then it seems Endeavor was willing to do just that. Seeing the date this video came out there was even more development on how the rest of the family sees Endeavor and honestly it is fantastic. With so much of the family seemingly forgiving Endeavor, his son Natsuo is starting to feel bad. With Natsuo being the only one who doesn't want to forgive his dad, Natsuo feels like he is going to be the bad guy in all this and that he might be forced to forgive Endeavor against his will. It is when he confesses those feeling to his dad that Endeavor tells him the most important thing, that it's okay not to forgive him. And that was a moment right there were he confirms with his son that he neglected him for years and that it is okay for Natsuo to feel that way for that reason and that Natsuo doesn't have to be forced into anything.

Endeavor reminds me a lot of my dad. Both are incredibly strong-willed, capable, serious and determined people, who would not be satisfied until they were the best. The way Enji acts towards Shoto is the same way my dad acted towards me: he wanted me to be better than him, and due to that, he became a very abusive and apathetic person, as he saw me as an extension of himself instead of my own person. He abused me for years both psychologically and physically, and also neglected my feelings a lot in pursue of making me the person he always envisioned me to be, which resulted in me developing psychological and social issues. He was not a good father. But he also was an incredibly strong person. He rose to the top in his industry, founded his own company to thrilling success, and managed to become such an experienced person in his area of expertise that he's constantly being quoted and sought by various other companies for his knowledge and capabilities. Do i hate him for what he did? No, not at all. He's just a human, who did a lot of dumb shit. In the end, he recognized he had done me more hurt than good. He apologized. He changed as a person. If i had decided not to forgive him, i would have been stuck in my own cycle of hatred and disgust that would not end until i saw him dead and out of my life, and that's just not realistic or healthy. He will never be able to restore our relationship the way it used to be before he became so self-centered. But that's not important. He understood his mistakes and tried to make up for them in the best way he could. The same thing is going on here. Each of the siblings has their own issues with Enji and none of them are expected to forgive him the same way. Its okay if they don't even forgive him in the first place. But Enji's a broken man, who was blinded by his own ambition and desires. He's not a bad person who seeks to hurt people as retaliation or for self-satisfaction. Just a misguided asshole who's trying to become less of an asshole, and start to live happily as he realized he never did. He's trying to reclaim that same happiness he took from others and give it back. And that's admirable, because he's being brave enough to face his past actions and learn from them, as much as it burns and stings.

👏🏽 So well said. I too was abused by a family member when I was young and for a long time I just cut them off. My feelings of hurt and betrayal were all RIGHT but when I started to work through those feelings and realize my abuser was just as broken as I was..it made me look at them like a person again. And once we had a discussion regarding what happened and I saw how much it hurt them that they did it as well..I just realized that working to let it go was the best thing to do. Most of us are broken. It’s hard and it sucks and sometimes broken people break others...and live to regret it and want to be better. Everyone deserves a chance to be more than their greatest mistakes. And seeing people represented as PEOPLE in fictional writing, to me, is SO IMPORTANT. And tell a victim that they are wrong to want to try to forgive is never okay. Forgiveness is the largest form of freedom a person can have. I cannot say that loud enough. Letting go of anger and resentment...was the most powerful thing I’ve ever done. It changed my life. It opened up parts of me I didn’t even know where closed off and allowed me to let more love and understanding in.

He has done terrible things, and his children + wife have no obligation to forgive him, but that fact that he is TRYING is fantastic. He's such a wonderfully realistic and complex character, and deserves to be treated as such. It's understandable that some people don't like him, but it's also understandable why others do. Horikoshi has done a fantastic job at fleshing out his character, and going in depth to display one of the series' main themes: *pushing yourself to be better*

  • @Ari33sa

I actually think the first step of Horikoshi trying to humanize Endeavor is as early as Hosu. Of course back then it is only subtle, completely twisted and doesn't really lead anywhere because Endeavor has not yet actually changed ... at all. It's also very sublte because back then the focus of the whole story is not at all on Enji, or even Shoto at that point. But Hosu is in a way an attempt by Endeavor and Shoto to find common ground. The really twisted and awful but also human thing is, that Endeavor in Hosu actually seems to believe that if Shoto just saw him for the great hero he was, he might be able to understand. He brings his son to Hosu not just for them to train and to make Shoto stronger, but as he tells himself (though with different words) so that 'Shoto can see what a hero really is'. It honestly is not all that different to Endeavor then going to shoto much later and essentially telling him, 'watch me (be a hero)'. Of course Endeavor's real developement and humanization only started with All Might's behaviour, but I think Hosu was the first glimpse of Endeavor 'being human' ^^.(Interestingly Hosu was also about a villain fundamentally believing that people DO NOT change)

For me the best part about his arc is that he chooses atonement over forgiveness. Even telling Shoto he doesn't want him to forgive him. Horikoshi expresses a good grasp on the concept of abuse and that the victim is never under any obligation to forgive their abuser. Instead of having him plea for forgiveness. He instead rejects the idea out of self-awareness of his actions. Understanding and accepting that may be an impossibility at this point. But that doesn't mean he still can't do his best to make up for it via atonement. Trying to argue in favor of forgiveness without atonement is gaslighting the victim. No matter what anyone says.

I get what you're saying when you point out that a simple verbal apology wouldn't change anything. And you're right, it wouldn't. And it really shouldn't. Most abuse is so much bigger than just a simple "I'm sorry". However, and I do *NOT* speak for everyone when I say this, but as someone who has been on the receiving end of abuse, apologies can be really helpful on the road to begin healing. It's not a cop out and shouldn't be treated like one, but rather it should be treated as a step in the road to change and healing. To me, in that situation, an apology is an important admission of wrong-doing, a direct acknowledgement that the abuser did something bad _and they know it._ A (good) apology is an important verbal recognition of wrong doing that also takes responsibility for it. That can be really vindicating for the person who has been wronged. Again, it doesn't fix anything, and it's often too little too late, but for people who felt like change in their abuser was never possible, and thought they would always be pushed down by them, it's a powerful way of sort of breaking one of the multiple chains holding the abused down. I'm not sure if that makes sense, so I'm sorry if it doesn't. Again, I *do not* speak for anyone but myself with this comment, I just wanted to let you know a different perspective. I really appreciate the video though, and it helped me think through my own feelings regarding Endeavor and realize what was me projecting feelings from my own experiences with abuse on him when that's not fair. Great video!

Oh just to add, I'm not trying to say a person can't try to be better and atone for their abuse without issuing a verbal apology. It isn't always necessary, and it isn't always wanted. I just wanted to point out that it _can_ be a powerful tool of healing for _some_ people. Endeavor not verbally apologizing does not invalidate his attempts to atone.

Fyumi reminds me of my mom. My dad is abusive and most of his abuse is targeted towards her. Yet when i call him out or argue with him like natsuo or todoroki, she tries to defuse the situation, tells me to apologize and that he's right and just trying his best etc. And it's not because she actually thinks he is a good person, but like fyumi, she wants to avoid conflict and gets anxious when tension happens. Sometimes when we're alone she says "you should know him by now, just avoid trouble" Its a very natural response. Abuse victims are also in some cases unaware of how toxic a person is to them and their family. Or even cope by denial or learn that trying to please the abuser and keep them calm results in the best outcome (less abuse and conflict). I think that fyumi's way of dealing with abuse is completely valid.

His instant reliance on violence also caused him to fail the Provisional License exam, while every other "damn extra" in his class passed, meaning they were more heroic than he was at the time, which would surely hurt his confidence, considering he strives to be at the top. Things like these make you realize that his actions would almost always lead to him not only inconveniencing himself, but others around him too, especially when he refused to be protected by his classmates at camp. When he reflects on the Kamino incident, and takes his first step to being an actual rival to Deku, he begins to become more of a leader than a lone wolf, and remains strong and confident without having to commit corrupt deeds or hurt his own teammates. His negative traits are realized, progressively fixed, and translate into a positive variant over time; he DOES learn from his mistakes, and it's becoming apparent that he feels remorse for his past actions. I recommend that you try and reflect on every character's actions, motivations, and improvements. All your reply has shown is that you've completely disregarded the deeper meaning of his interactions, his gradual growth, and anything that isn't explicitly told to you. Learn to read between the lines.

I think you started the analysis to late the character starts to change from almost we first see him. When at the festival he is saying to himself not that he has done anything wrong but that Shoto is just going through a stage. This can be seen through his conversations with All-Might and Deku. After Deku's fight with Shoto, he is seen approaching Shoto about the use of the flames but when Shoto responds with its not my mindset about you that's changed, it's I forgot about you. Endeavor is visibly shaken which I believe is the true catalyst for his change. As the person who he put all this time and effort the make the strongest hero ever completely rejects him on every level.

The things he did? Unforgivable. But to recognize these wrongs, and to see and acknowledge that he himself was the source of it? That's development. True Development. And it's a long road to walk. i think what makes Endeavor such a good character is that he was just a passionate dude. he wasn't a bad person initally, BUT its because his greed took over that he became a monster. and since he was humanized, it made his downfall into abusing his family even more realistic and monstrous. His story shows that even "good" people will become monsters if they become disillusioned enough. That's why it was important that he wasnt just an asshole to be an asshole. He was a regular dude who became an asshole, which makes his actions even worse than monsters. at least monsters dont have anything to lose. if we're on a graph, monsters are already on the line, every bad action just goes farther. they don't have much to fall. But people who are regular, they fall even farther than pre-established monsters. their actions are worse than monsters because they have so much to loose. thats why i think that it was good that horikoshi established that before shoto was born, endeavor was just a dude.

I should hate him because my father used to beat my mum and i despise him for it he's never even tried to redeem himself for his actions he just says he didnt do it, but with endevour he's acknowledged what hes done and he dosent expect instant forgiveness but he is now trying to be there for his children but as i said he doesnt expect them to forgive him, that is why endevour is enjoyable to read because he shows that people can change without everyone having to forgive and forget.

I have mixed feeling for endeavor but ultimately I like that he realizes his wrongs and tries to make amends. As someone who has been in a long term abusive relationship, I understand all of his family and their positions, but also him. I never got the closure of my abuser trying to make amends, so in my head, I see endeavor at least trying and say, “well look at that”. I have the position of all of endeavors kids right now combined. I’ve been so confused on what to think about her. To hate her, to forgive her, to understand her, nothing really worked out yet. My point is, it’s a fairly realistic look at abuse victims and how they deal with the aftermath, and shows that yes, while abusers are very unlikely to change, there is a very very teeny tiny percentage of them that come to understand their wrongdoings and change. Im all for that

  • @bjas60

As a person who had to deal with abuse from both parents and my ex in small ways, I read this chapter and felt how everyone in the family felt. My dad and mom abused me but after I started middle school my dad realized his mistakes and acted differently. He never said sorry, but instead changed how he treated me and started to be more kind to me instead of hard and stuff like that. So I felt how some of the family felt when they saw that Endeavor was trying to be better as a dad. I also felt how the one brother who just gave Endeavor a lot of hate because my mom never stopped and my dad couldn’t do anything or else he would get into more trouble. So I’m glad my mother finally left because she couldn’t and will never understand how to change. But I’m glad Endeavor is trying just like how my dad is trying.

I think the manga itself does bring up the question of if Endeavor is worth redeeming based on the reactions of his children. The fact that none of his children are willing to immediately forgive him from the start shows that they appreciate the sensitivity of the topic. They even paint Fuyumi's feelings out as the desire to have a real family than just instantly forgiving Endeavor. That said, the ending for this type of arc has to be carefully pulled off if it wants to leave many people happy. For now, it seems Endeavor has decided that he doesn't need his children to forgive him to improve himself. He knows it's possible they might never forgive him. In the end, all he can do is better himself to the best of his ability, regardless of if he gets the fairy tale ending or not.

From my personal perspective, I do think everything that has gone on with the character and story wise has been incredibly well written and executed, and remains very interesting to see what happens next for him. And while I'm not on the "Can never be forgiven" extremist side of the opinions, I do understand the people who still don't really like him, I'm currently just in a middling phase. I think with all the discussion regarding forgiving and recognition between his family, I think one important factor they haven't really dealt completely is with Endeavor recognizing why he did his actions. At least from my experience reading, what I understand is that he just knows what he did was wrong and wants to redeem himself, but I think exploring the "why" of what led him down this path could lead to much greater sense of clarity for the character. That his selfishness and obsession with being "number 1" and being "the best" basically led to him breeding children like cattle (and treating them like cattle) just to surpass All Might's title. That all the good he did in the world and everyone he saved didn't matter just because he wasn't at the top of a list, and in turn ended up doing some truly non-heroic deeds. I think recognizing how dangerous and toxic this way of thinking is, and maybe fighting to ensure something like that could not happen again, could go a long way for the character. Ultimately, at least in my opinion, My Hero Academia is story about defining what it means to be a hero, in a world that has forgotten what that means. That working to be the best for others, is better than trying to be the best for yourself. And I am very interested in seeing how Endeavor deals with that issue head on. Still overall, really good and well done video.

gamesEnlisted I don’t think the “I want to be the very best” thought is EVER as toxic as Endeavour’s version in real life, since we’re all... taught to... respect people (we’re not exactly “taught”, and it’s not specifically “respecting” others, but it’s smth around those that I can’t get my finger on; but anyways, you’ve NEVER heard of a real life Endeavour, and that’s for a good reason; and those that ARE obviously have been educated differently)

I instantly started crying when you talked about Fuyumi's role as mediator because what you described fits to my upbringing completely. I didn't suffer any kind of abuse, but there was a period during my middle school years when my parents were on so bad terms with each other that divorce looked almost inevitable. One day my mom just left and took his stuff and my younger sister with her. She was still too young to grasp the situation, at least in my eyes so I took it upon myself to fix our family's problems and chose to stay with my dad, even though I had much easier time with my mother. During next few months I did my best to try to make my parents to settle their differences and forgive each other and whether that was my doing or not, everything worked out. I however was completely burned out at that point and my social life in and out of school hadn't been pleasant either but since I lived in very backwater and conservative countryside, there were nobody with interest or knowledge to recognize my situation and offer any help, because no direct abuse had happened and I was still doing better at school than most of my peers. Middle school ended, my parents reunited and my problems seemingly disappeared but of course they were just dormant and kept fermenting over years and during the next major hardship in my life it all resurfaced and instead of just regular burnout I now had severe depression, anxiety disorder, trust issues and all kinds of other shit that made me completely dysfunctional human being. And while there was much else than just my role as a mediator, it definitely played important part messing my head up. Receiving outside validation for that problem feels so relieving. Thanks!

Endevour is a character that is probably one of my favorites simply because he's very real. Endevor's and Shoto's story arc together is one that is very close to home for me; I've expereinced a similiar relationship with my mother, not nearly as bad, but it's been something thats impacted my family. We're currently on our way to building a positive relationship thank goodness and we have a bright future ahead of us. I think this subject and arc is being handled way better then I've seen in a lot of media and portrays both the abuser and the victims in a very real, human ways and people seem to have a hard time grasping how a lot of these situations are actually handled in real life and what families go through when in a process of healing. All of these character responses are completely realistic and have a level of understanding to them regardling the situaiton! I don't see how people don't get that! The process of healing is easier for others, forgiveness isn't a cop out for absolbing past mistakes. At the same time healing is much harder for others, those whe have suffered the longest or the worst, and yes, even for the abuser. The abuser has to look back on all there past mistakes, come to terms to why they did the things they did, confront past demons they've never wanted to for the sake of change and become a better person their children can look up to. For an abuser I would say in some cases, definitly not all, it's incredably brave to trudge through denial from both themselves and those they're seeking forgiveness from without evening knowing if it's possible. This doesn't make their actions go away. This doesn't make what they did right. But for a parent and a child to reconcile after abuse is something you don't see a lot of media and sort of perpetuates this hopeless narrtive that things will never get better and people can never change. The fact the author of MHA hasn't imeditially made things better between characters is a good sign of self awareness and an understanding of the subject matter he's dealing with. Some people just have no IDEA what they're talking about. It isn't just something thats going to go away; I predict that as time goes on Shoto and Endevor may be able to build a positive, yet tentive relationship with established boundries that will be good for them in the long run.

I think the deeper reason why I like Endeavor is the fact that at no point (so far) has he tried to force forgiveness. He’s patient and understands how he’s harmed his children. So even though he’s trying to change and do better, he’s understands that his family may never forgive him. And he even has trouble forgiving himself.

He thought about how hard he worked to surpass him only to discover that he too (All Might) was flawed. The monologue he gives speaks for itself as he was well aware of his actions and the result it let him to. Hence why he went to Toshinori for advice.

I think his kids were cold towards Endeavor when he came home, even though he said he wanted to do better, is because words have no meaning if action isn't taken. They didn't want to believe it until they actually saw change in him. Kids don't own forgiveness to their parents, the parent has to deserve forgiveness. Which is why I like this representation of abuse so much, it's not like Endeavor drastically changed and all the kids forgive him instantly, it takes time. Endeavor's character development is great, and I want the Todorokis to have peaceful lives together.

People seem to not realize that there's a difference between forgivable and excusable, and forgiveness doesn't necessarily mean that "everything's fine" or that you have to trust someone again, or that you're no longer hurt from their actions. There's a difference between forgiving someone and reconciling with someone. None of Endeavor's horrible actions were excusable. Regardless of his intentions and insecurities behind them all, abuse is NEVER okay and NEVER excusable, EVER. Forgiving someone means deciding that they don't owe you anything in return, you release them from their debt. If Natsuo, Shoto, or any of the Todoroki children forgave Endeavor, that doesn't necessarily have to mean that they would trust their father again or have a relationship with him, or that they're no longer hurt from all the pain he caused them. They just aren't desperate for their father to "prove" anything to them anymore. When Natsuo was in trouble and Endeavor made that speech to him to atone for what he did, if Natsuo forgave him, that doesn't mean he has to hug his dad and say "thank you dad, you're the best!" but I could see him saying more of a "thanks dad" and walking away without saying another word (whereas the things he said in the actual show clearly showed that he was still holding a grudge). Personally, I think Shoto has forgiven his father, but clearly hasn't reconciled with him. He's willing to put his issues with his dad aside in order to learn from him to become a better hero. He's obviously still hurt from what his father did to him, but he's not letting it hold him back from being the best hero he can be. Shoto is mature and acts like a professional adult around him, whereas Natsuo would probably shout at him in an instant, bringing up everything we already know again, and then run away. To put it more simply, forgiveness is one-way, while reconciling is two-ways. It seems to me that Shoto has forgiven his father, and so has Fuyumi (the dinner was her idea after all, she wanted to bring the family together again), but Natsuo hasn't, and obviously Touya hasn't either. But while 2/4 have FORGIVEN him, 0/4 have RECONCILED with him. Am I making any sense here? I know I'm rambling a lot lol but this is a topic I'm really passionate about.

Pretty much a lot of what he said in this video really resonates with me. My father thought out the two decades my mother's relationship with him to and 15 years of it, between me and my sister. We were all mental abused by him. And it's been 4 years ever since we left him, during that time, I started thinking about what do I think about my father? Well came to the conclusion that yeah, I will never forgive a lot of what he is done to me, me, my sister and my mother, but do I believe that keeping that anger towards him will solve anything, no it won't. But I definitely would want to have at least one good memory with him before I won't be able to. What you said about forgiveness at 22:02 - 23:12, definitely resonated with how I feel about my father now. It also reminded me Scar's and the antiviolence advice. In Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood "I know the animosity you feel.... A State Alchemist as responsible for the burning of our village and death of our loved ones.... But, your vengeance will only sow the seeds of further violence. What you're doing is senseless revenge and it's feeding a fruitless cycle of death.... You must end this cycle once and for all. " Scar's Master So, yeah, I don't know if you will be able to see this at all because of how KZread is and probably are busy urself, but hopefully you'll be able to see it some time. And if you do Thank you.
