Endangered baby gorilla dies six days after birth at Audubon Zoo

Just days after celebrating the birth of a critically-endangered baby gorilla, the Audubon Zoo is now mourning its death.
The Audubon Zoo said the six-day-old infant gorilla died Wednesday after staff noticed it seemed lethargic and weak in the arms of its mother, Tumani. The infant gorilla was taken to the zoo’s animal hospital but the veterinarian team was unable to revive it.

Unacceptable for a baby gorilla to die in an American zoo. The problem with zoos is transparency and accountability and a constant bottomless need for funding - money that most cities don't have. As a result, bad news, mistakes, problems, needed improvements don't get reported because it hurts their bottom line and the reason these things happen in the first place is due to a lack of funding so these problems become cylical. By the end of the day, the public has no idea what's going on at our local zoos across the country. The newest controversy is that we are finding that more and more zoos are regularly giving the animals psychotropic drugs to make them easier to care for, meaning less staff are needed. Better to keep an animal zonked out so that one young, minimum wage worker can be there instead of 2 or 3 professionals, right? We just need to end this out dated concept of a "zoo."

I really really hate it. I am heartbroken. Maybe she will have another soon. I hope they let us know the results of what happened. She looked as if she was being a good mom.
