END OF SERVICE - GRANTHAM SPUR - LAST DAY OF WORKING CUSTOMERS

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

February 29, 2024
This video documents the last Trillium Railroad train that provided service to customers on the Grantham Spur.
There were many Southern Ontario railfans present to observe and document the historic action.
We first observed the Trillium local travelling north as it came off the Trillium Thorold Spur and rounded the curve to the left to approach the junction the CN Grimsby Subdivision at mile 7.8 (Grimsby Sub mile 9.5) at Merriton, Ontario.
After the junction, the train proceeded northwest to the Trillium yard situated on Yale Crescent, St Catharines.
After arriving at the yard, 1859 started the work of servicing Dunn Paper for the last time.
While Dunn unloaded its box cars, 1859 backed north along Berryman Ave, then cut across to the west between industrial properties, and finally backed north across Welland Ave. to lift two tanks from Kemira Chemical.
These were the last two tanks Trillium would pull from that customer before the cessation of Trillium operations on the Grantham Spur.
While this was happening 1859’s crew determined that a serious oil leak was occurring as a result of a fault in a prime mover oil hose.
While this caused a lower-than-normal oil level in the engine, the situation was not critical, and the oil level was continuously monitored by the crew.
Thus ‘LAST DAY’ operations could be continued.
The leak did, however, impact 1859’s ability to safely return to home base. Returning to home would require 1859 and the now empty rail cars to recross the CN Grimsby Subdivision at Merritton.
1859’s crew determined that crossing the CN Grimsby mainline at Merritton posed an unacceptable risk to CN. If, while crossing CN sub, 1859’s oil fault became so serious as to cause a shutdown of its prime mover, there would be the potential of delay or obstruction of CN’s movements. This could not be permitted to happen.
Also there were concerns that should oil be found to leak onto the ground on the return to home journey, it would be a serious situation.
With an ongoing oil leak (albeit with a non-serious lowered oil level) the safety conscious decision was made to tie the train down for the night and wait for a repair crew to replace the faulty oil hose the next morning. Then to make the return trip home that next day.
My film footage concludes with the train being tied down.

CN might wish to sell the real estate; it is CN owned. 3. Another operator might take over the operations of the Grantham Spur. Have a great weekend. James.

Perhaps all Alcos of that type sound this way ? I haven't seen that many to be able to know that. But its distinctive rumble is awesome. Your visit reminds me that I must visit the RC this year to attempt to catch some local action. Stay safe. James.

If you haven't, you might enjoy the COLD start up of 1859 that happened there on Yale Crescent after the bad hose was replaced. Cold start videos seem to be everywhere in the UK, but not that often in North America, and maybe even less so here. So it is pretty cool IMHO. I think that you'd like that one. Very nice pictures from the last trip with this train, interesting that the locomotive had an oil leak and needed to be repaired. Which is of course better for the environment. Hi Andrew. Thank you for checking in with us. I sincerely appreciate your very generous comment. I believe that you are correct. In the end it appears that there were just too few customers. Dunn Paper is apparently moving. Trenergy (which made and installed all those hoods for the NSC NS coil cars) reportedly informed Trillium that rail service was not going to be needed in the future. That left only Kemira Chemicals as a customer. Thus for a spur of maybe 7 to 10 km in length, it would be a losing proposition . James.

Great video, James, nice to watch this well-planned day of shunting work! Probably it was a wise decision to repair the oil leakage first. I was wondering why the box cars left the paper factory empty. So I looked up the website of the firm. As they are producing fine papers, it makes it clearer. Hi Dave. Thank you for visiting again. GIO (which owns Trillium) had leased the Grantham Spur from CN for a number of years and so control reverts to CN. Possible options, as I understand it right now: 1/ CN finds a new operator to replace Trillium 2/ CN takes over the operations 3/ CN offers the trackage for sale 4/ CN could apply to the government to close the spur permanently Apparently, one of the customers (Kemira Chemicals) on the spur is 'seeking options' to get rail service resumed. Trillium itself continues it operations south of the Thorold Spur, however. Trillium has a number of large customers on those other areas of trackage . I wish you and everyone else at SSRP to have a great weekend, Dave. Stay safe. James.

Greetings to you HouseofMasks. No-you did not miss anything. All of the action in this video happened on the same day. I think what might appear confusing is that due to having to land and do a battery changes for the drone, not every last movement could be captured. This perhaps led to the flow of the activity seeming discontinuous at times. Also, due to the cold temperatures, I had to put the drone inside the car from time to time to warm it up. The cold actually caused the settings of the drone's camera to go out of adjustment at one point which required a reset causing some lost film chances. James.

These are excellent questions. And at this time I do not have any answers. CN owns the spur and leased it out to Trillium because it was not an economical operation for them. I image that Trillium is ceasing operation there for the same reasons. One reason that I heard was that Dunn Paper was planning to move and would not need rail service on the spur after that move. Another customer, Trenergy, had reportedly told Trillium that no future railway service would be needed. That left only Kemira Chemicals as the sole customer. We'll have to wait and see what happens. The crew sets the cars into Dunn’s siding, even though they can only unload one car at a time. When the engine comes back from picking up the tank cars, they pull all four of those box cars out. What was up with that? Did Dunn Paper refuse them?

  • @FrogandFlangeVideo

Good morning Donald. Please understand that due to changing drone batteries from time to time (and also the fact that the action portrayed happened over a good portion of the day) the action filmed may sometimes appear discontinuous. Here is what happened. 1859 arrived with the 4 full boxes of paper. 1859 lifted the 2 empties from Dunn. They pushed the 4 loads into Dunn. 1859 went north to lift 2 empty tanks from Kemira. Over the course of many hours - they spotted the 4 loads at Dunn, one at a time, at Dunn's single loading door. The loads all now empty, 1859 lifted them from Dunn and made up the train for the return trip out of the Grantham Spur. I hope that this make some sense. James.

If you up near the top of the map where the red, blue and yellow tracks converge (where it says St Catharines), this is where we filmed. That is basically where the Yale Crescent Yard is. Neither of the tracks extending to Lake Ontario, nor the one to the Niagara River exist these days. There was a further track, not shown in this map, which went left towards Hamilton, but I could not find a map of it. That is the one that was taken out many years ago, and which ran along next the backyards of the houses along Yale Crescent. James.

Sad….Anybody taking over the Route for the Customers?

Hello doublediamondrr. Thank you for visiting and commenting. I have not heard and news in that regard, yet. As I see them, the options are: 1.CN (which owns the trackage) may resume the service , 2. Another contractor may take over the operations, 3. CN may apply to the government to abandon the line permanently and, if successful, rip out the tracks and sell the land. There might be other possibilities of course. We'll just have to wait for further news. I read that one customer (Kemira Chemicals) has already made a representation to some level of government to try to get serviced resumed. It could be the City of St Catharines. Having a local railroad line end up being owned by a city is not unheard of. James.

@@FrogandFlangeVideo Sounds good. I’m sure some Entity will pick it up if the Chem Company still needs Service. I’m sure you stay abreast and be out there for the new Operator’s Switching. Thanks!

So is it officially done running trains on that line or is it now just "as needed" trains

Hi Randall. It's over for now. Whether CN (who owns the spur) will take over is an unanswered question. As far as I understand it 'as needed' trains have not been discussed. Thanks for your comment. James.

I didn’t see in the comments but will this line be abandoned or is the line being taken over by a larger railroad?

Hello Kevin. I don't have any info on that at the moment. The Grantham Spur is owned by CN, with Trillium having leased it for a few years. The answer to your question is in CN's hands. It is possible that some other railroad operator will take over. Thanks for the comment. Stay safe. James.

@@kevinkearney6847 Yeah; totally agree. I expect that this loco will see duty on Trillium's other operations in the Niagara region - just not on the Grantham Spur. I haven't been able to get down there since I did that last day film work, so I cannot say what is really going there right now. I hope that Trillium does not scrap it. It has a really cool audio signature. James.

@@FrogandFlangeVideo oh so they aren’t quitting operations all together, just that spur! I didn’t understand what was going on then. It was my impression that the trillium is ceasing operations all together. I still hate to see stoppage of anything on the railroad personally.

@@kevinkearney6847 Me too Kevin. I could have explained that better I think. Thankfully the Grantham Spur part of Trillium's operations were not that significant at the end. So Trillium carries on, and hopefully the Alco carries on too. I hope to film some more of Trillium's actions this summer. Stay safe. James.

I believe that the noise you are hearing is the pressure relief valves popping open to relieve excess air pressure from the system.
