🎵Waltzing Matilda: Australia’s unofficial national anthem. A beautiful yet tragic tale from Australia’s early settler days about a wanderer who in order to survive, steals a sheep but rather than get caught, drowns himself in a watering hole. 🇦🇺
Recorded live and performed as an encore with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on Dec 5th, 2019
🎥: Todd Rosenberg

List of Aussie terminology:
Swagman: a man who travelled the country looking for work. The swagman's "swag" was a bed roll that bundled his belongings.
Billabong: an oxbow lake (a cut-off river bend) found alongside a meandering river.
Coolibah tree: a kind of eucalyptus tree which grows near billabongs
Jumbuck: a sheep
Billy: a can for boiling water in, usually 1-1.5 litres (2-3 pints)
Tucker bag: a bag for carrying food
Troopers: Aussie policemen
Squatter: Australian squatters started as early farmers who raised livestock on land which they did not have the legal title to use; in many cases they later gained legal use of the land even though they did not have full possession, and became wealthy thanks to these large land holdings. The squatter's claim to the land may be as unfounded as is the swagman's claim to the jumbuck which makes this story all the more tragic.

Lyrics:
Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his "Billy" boiled,
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."
Chorus:
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his "Billy" boiled,
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."
Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong,
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."
(Chorus)
Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred.
Down came the troopers, one, two, and three.
"Whose is that jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."
(Chorus)
Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong.
"You'll never catch me alive!" said he
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong:
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda, with me."

American accent is dreadful don’t know why he chooses to hide his natural Australian accent.
It was this very piece that I saw performed by Ray Chen a few years ago in Brisbane that inspired me to play violin seriously. I had no idea who he was, I’d never heard of him, until my dad bought us tickets to see his concert. I don’t remember much of the concert, I don’t remember what he played, except this piece. I just remember the way he played and how it spoke to me on another level. Those few moments changed my life. Now everything that I do, say, and breathe revolves around violin and music. I just performed my own arrangement of Waltzing Matilda for a recital which was very inspired by Ray’s arrangement. I love this piece so much and the violinist even more. I could not thank Ray Chen enough for what he has given to me and how he has shown me what music really means. Also, that vibrato on those artificial harmonics! So difficult and executed so well.

I want this to be my level of commitment to music. I know that it will have to be for me to be able to continue, and I want to do it. No, I don't want to continue with music. I NEED to continue, for my whole life. Music, being my passion, my drive, my fire. I NEED IT! I want more. I NEED MORE! While there will be challenges along the way, it is absolutely necessary for me to do this! Thank you for coming to my Ted Talks.

When I was a young shortwave listener,I would get up early before school to listen to Radio Australia. Before, and at the end of their broadcast, they would play Waltzing Matilda. Wonderful violin arrangement.Thank you ever so much.😊

I appreciate that the audience held back on the applause for a while and let the emotion hang in the air. That was damn near magical
I’m Aussie and this piece always brings tears to my eyes
I remember when you played this in Brisbane this year, i was in tears, the amount of emotion that you spread around the room was incredible.

Grew up in the South Pacific in the early and mid-90s and attended a Catholic secondary school in the north of the Fiji Islands. One of our teachers was, coincidentally, Mrs Matilda G. She taught English but also taught Music to the higher forms. She played the ukulele, much like the rest of our fellow Pacific islanders. Mind you, music in school back then centred on singing. The teacher played an instrument (keyboard, guitar or ukulele) and the entire class sang along. We alternated between the hymn book, local and Pacific folk songs, and Kiwi and Aussie songs. We'd sing "Waltzing Matilda" to death. The only other songs that got as much attention were "Kookaburra Sits In the Old Gum Tree" and the Maori song "Pokarekare Ana". Your performance has brought back to life many, many fond memories of my school days. Thank you, Ray.
He also played the piece for his encore when he came Taiwan last year. It is really a beautiful and an adoreble song, specially, with his virtuoso variations.
The eyebrow game is strong, but not as strong as it was during the encore at Hollywood Bowl this past summer.
I heard this same encore in person a few weeks ago, didn’t remember the name, lucky me, I found this video.
I come back to this every once in a while. One of my favourite violin pieces to listen to. It’s sad knowing I will likely never be able to express what I feel through my own playing, and only by listening to Ray.
This got to be my most favorite Ray’s interpretation of music so far❤❤❤
I love how there's no ads to interrupt the music😍

I love how you took more time in the artificial harmonics section here than you did at the Play with Ray concert! Brava

When I was in elementary school, I remember watching an Australian drama called The Valley of Secrets😍 The more I listen to it now, the better I feel🥰
Ray don‘t worry. I‘ve been living in Berlin for 47 yrs but you can still cut butter with my Boston accent when I speak English and you‘re a great fiddler.
When I was a kid, I wanted to learn the violin but it didn’t happen for some reason. This is how the instrument should be played. Thank you, Mr. Chen.
I have listened to this several times. It is such a wonderful piece, especially the way Mr. Chen plays it!
Very creative musical illustration of the lyrics of the folk-tune. Beautiful. I love both the Stephan Koncz and Ray Chen arrangements. The Koncz arrangement brought me here. Ray's composition is really great musical story-telling! Wow.
Its full of emotions. Omg just by listening i can feel and visualize how the story goes.
That is beautiful! Ray Chen ROCKS!
I love the aussie accent!
Why I'm crying? It's beautiful. I felt it so much. Thanks.
Ray Chen, a living inspiration! What a wonderful arrangement, you really made me travel to your home!
Damn Ray you really put me through an emotional rollercoaster right there
G'day from the Snowies, Ray. Haven't been able to play clarinet in public for months. At least you are able to play a non aerosol instrument in these crazy times. Bowing, not blowing by the billabong. 🎶⚘
This made me cry, thank you so much for giving us a piece of home and for playing this beautiful piece that truly captures the Aussie folk life
The first time when I cry listening a piece. ❤
go ray
Absolutely stunning. That was my musical moment of today.
I'm so glad that I got to see this live in Melbourne this year when you came to play with the MSO. I love the journey that this particular arrangement of the piece takes us on, taking elements from the lyrics and its origin to create a true masterpiece. I will never get tired of listening to this, it truly cured my prior dislike for the overplayed traditional Waltzing Matilda
How do I like this twice?
Thank you for this video! Your playing always sounds so angelic!
I just wish I could hit the 'LIKE' button everytime I listen to this. I love it so much!
Awesome arrangement , love the slow contemplative parts
This was SO beautiful! Very moved! But I didn't cry only because the violinist behind him (left on the screen) made me chuckle 😆 he had dreams... 😆😆😆
So great to hear a song I've sung since i could speak performed with so much passion. Thank you Ray.
That was absolutely beautiful! Wow!
