Enamel Tools for Cloisonné Part 2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Tools for enamel and jewelry making can get very expensive. I try to show people that you can buy some of them from a regular hardware supplier. I've mentioned that in this video.
The polishing motor at the end of the video is one that is generally used for high finish precious metals - and not absolutely necessary for enameling. A barrel polisher might be good enough and should be soft enough not to damage the enamel.
Don't use a magnetic pin polisher - this will definitely damage the enamel - I know from experience!
Polishing motors like the one shown are very expensive...so they are an investment and you need to consider whether you will make your money back.
Steel mesh can be purchased fairly cheaplly - buy it in sheets and then cut it yourself. You will pay much more from buying them pre-made. The diamond files are great - you will definitely need those. And make sure to use them with water at all times.

I wonder what size mesh is your firing rack? How many squares across in an inch? My screen rack seems to sag in the heat of the kiln, but it has smaller squares and I think finer wire. Love all your videos!

Hi there, thanks for getting in touch. Yes, there are lots of different mesh thicknesses. I don't know the number of squares across - I buy the mesh in sheet form, totally flat and then cut and make it myself that way I can make different sizes for different projects. It sounds like you have very light mesh - which is totally useless as it either sags like you say, or burns right through. When you order it next time make sure it is heavier duty (it doesn't have to be "heavy duty" because that can be really thick and therefore takes more time in the kiln - but that may not be an issue for you). Try to get something medium sized. Great that you like the videos, if you there is a particular technique you want to see just let me know!

@@GeraldineMurphyEnamel Thank you for replying! I'm glad to hear you confirm that the thin mesh is no good. I'll order a few different screen sizes to try out. I'm particularly interested in stenciling with enamels. I see that you use them in some of your work, and if there are any tips or tricks for that I would love to see see a video on that subject, if you wanted to. : )

@@ra.5067 Hi, great, do try different mesh sizes - a medium rather than heavy duty one should be fine. Yes, I'll do a stencilling video - I use stencils a lot! As do a lot of my students who come to the studio. It will be about 10 days or so because I have a few things on at the moment. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
