EN DASHES, EM DASHES AND HYPHENS | IMPORTANT PUNCTUATION LESSON | English Lessons with Grammar man

Grammar man explains how to use en dashes, em dashes and hyphens perfectly in English. This is easier than you think, and a very practical English lesson. Simple punctuation mistakes ruin an otherwise good piece of writing, and stand out to many native speakers, so learn the simple rules now!

GRAMMAR MAN:
Hi! I have a quick challenge for you-I’m going to give you 3 sentences, and I want you to decide which sentences are punctuated correctly, and which sentence, or sentences, contain punctuation errors.
1. JFK was president from 1961 - 1963.
2. We learn three languages at school - German, French and Italian
3. Today - if you watch this lesson - you will learn how to use dashes perfectly.
Okay, so, all three sentences contained punctuation errors, and sentence one, contained two errors!
If you’re surprised by this information, then stick around, because in this lesson, I'm going to teach you the rules you need to use dashes and hyphens perfectly!
Today I have a very useful punctuation lesson for you: DASHES (plural), and the HYPHEN.
So there are actually THREE different horizontal lines we need to know about!
These are commonly used incorrectly in English by students, from beginners right up to advanced users, and even native speakers.
In today’s lesson, as I mentioned, I’m going to teach you the rules so that you can always use these perfectly in your writing, and express yourself accurately-express the meaning that you want to convey.

    @@nidhimanaktala6925 To answer your question-no, there is not a need for a comma after 'German.' However, it is also not a mistake! You are referring to the 'Oxford comma.' This is a stylistic decision, as opposed to a grammatical rule. This article explains the topic succinctly: www.grammarly.com/blog/what-is-the-oxford-comma-and-why-do-people-care-so-much-about-it/

    At 8:03, "The friendly-looking man" is incorrect. There is no need for a hyphen in a compound adjective when the first word ends in "ly." This is an exception to the hypen rule with compound adjectives. Other than that, great video Grammar Man!

  • @LearnEnglishwithGrammarMan

    @LearnEnglishwithGrammarMan

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jacob, thanks for the compliment and feedback. The rule you are citing refers to adverbs ending in -ly, and if 'friendly' was an adverb, you would be correct. However, 'friendly' is an adjective; you could say 'he was a friendly man', modifying the noun 'man'. When the first word of the two-word modifier ends in -ly, hyphenate if the -ly word acts as one idea with the second word AND the -ly word can be used alone with the noun (i.e., the -ly word is an adjective). Rule 3 in the following link: www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/hyphens.asp

    @@LearnEnglishwithGrammarMan I stand corrected. Thank you. And thanks again for amplifying the issue of people misusing the hyphen. I work in a place where people are doing it constantly, and it annoys the s%#t out of me. I also see the hypen scurge on serious websites of serious companies. So keep spreading the good word about grammar. You might also make a video (if you haven't already) about the logic behind certain grammar rules. This is, I think, the next level of understanding grammar and effective expression in writing.
