Emulating the Hyper Neo Geo 64! How is MAME Emulation vs Original SNK Arcade Hardware?
Ойындар
SUPPORT THE CHANNEL : / videogameesoterica
Lately I have been getting TONS of questions on the Hyper Neo Geo 64 hardware! Should I buy one? What are the best games? Is the arcade hardware worth it? Well...that's not an easy retro gaming related question to answer! So I thought...what if you could TRY the games in MAME before you made a purchasing decision? So I decided to see for myself! Retrogaming test incoming!
Patreon Thanks : Seth Peterson, Tim Hugall, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson,

Mike Puelinckx, Shad Uttam, Dan L and James Mann!
The Hyper Neo Geo 64 has seven total games; Fatal Fury Wild Ambition, Samurai Shodown 64 (also known as Samurai Spirits), Samurai Shodown 64: Warriors Rage (also known as Samurai Spirits 64 2), Buriki One, Beast Busters: Second Nightmare, Round Trip RV and Offbeat Racer. So we get arcade fighting games from SNK, arcade racing games from SNK and one arcade lightgun game from SNK! But...how well does each game work under MAME emulation? Let's find out with MAME .251! Emulators for the win!
Plus all seven of these games qualify for both obscure video game and rare video game status...so MAME running them at all is a great win for video game preservation!

I always offer up source captures of games running on real hardware so they can compare their emulation against the silicon
I remember Jeff Ferrier purchased all the old stock of Hyper64 boards and games and also programmed some new neo-geo games, I don’t think they were all released.

I’ve heard all sorts of tales of people buying up large stocks of hardware for sure
I lived in Japan in the late '90s and these things were really common in the arcade, everybody had Buriki One, which I still can't wrap my head around. I always thought these games would be a shoe-in for Dreamcast ports, but it never happened, and I was always pretty disappointed with the PlayStation port of Fatal Fury. I always assumed the hardware was too obscure to be emulated properly, so seeing this running is an absolute delight.

@@VideoGameEsoterica you were wrong about CRTs though
I would say that the lighting on the MAME versions is way better than the original. Way more dynamic. I also love that in RV Racer, the front wheels actually move in the way that they would in real life. So many racing games just had the cars skid and move in such unrealistic ways. This is not to say that it is perfect here but so much better then other 'classic' racers.

I actually played a HNG64 title in the wild: The Kingdome in Seattle before getting torn down had a sitdown cab of Road's Edge, I thought the graphics were really nice at the time and I wondered why it looked so much better than N"64" at home haha (I knew they were different platforms) Later on I did own a HNG64 and a copy of Sam Sho 64, but I just couldn't have fun with it honestly. You can tell what is happening in the game and it doesn't crash. As far as I am concerned that is a major win for an emulator! HNG64 is also simultaneously has it easier and harder. Easier in that there is only 7 titles they need to get working. Difficult because it is such an obscure piece of hardware with a limited amount of software to understand it via. Really a double edged sword here. But it is in a state far better than I would have ever expected. It would be the same with emulation of M2 - it could be a single sprite and it would already be a big achievement.
@VideoGameEsoterica

Yes considering hardware with more games and popularity (Konami Viper) barely emulate at all
the real hardware capture being so dark is very odd, it almost looks like the luma values are borked. Does it look that dark when you're playing it?
@VideoGameEsoterica

It requires a monitor that has a bright image. During capture its a bit darker. Just part of how the hardware works
@ImmortalGodEmperor

@@VideoGameEsoterica ah interesting, I'm guessing that MAME is grabbing a raw digital image directly from the frame buffer, and there's some kind of signal processing then that happens before the image is sent out for display on real hardware. I think it's safe to say that the Hyper Neo Geo 64 isn't going to be emulated properly in MAME anytime soon(still impressive though). The hardware is an absolute nightmare and I think it's one of the reasons why SNK went bankrupt. I can't imagine how much money SNK put into making this thing, only for it to fail. Also regarding the sound emulation, pretty sure it's because the sound ROMs aren't dumped correctly, hard to tell cause sound emulation is so picky.
