    Fabulous video Dylan. I have the good fortune to drive these very trains out of St. Pancras and I can assure you I truly know how lucky I am. The view of the station when you arrive in to London is just incredible, and likewise as you snake out of the throat, pass the concrete terminal and open her up it sends a shiver down the spine as the turbo kicks in and the 'whine' starts. Make the most of these iconic trains, for all too soon they will, like all good things, be confined to history......

    @@highpath4776 Incorrect, the weekend catering is provided by a third party (Rail Gourmet). They are currently on furlough hence why there's no catering in weekend or any standard trolley service in the weekday. The company (SSP) owns RG, they also owns pretty much every shop/catering unit at every station. So either way SSP isn't losing out in revenue by having no catering onboard as its likely those who buy onboard will more likely buy from the station's shops etc.

    Excellent video. I remember St Pancras in the 1980’s, a far darker, gloomier, grottier place, but still full of old charm and character. The transformation there has been incredible 😎🇬🇧👍🏽 built on stilts (now shops etc down there) as it was originally used to store barrels of beer under the station which were trained down from Burton-Upon-Trent brewery. I was lucky enough to be on board the very last HST 1L71 from Swansea to Paddington on their last day with GWR with 43002 Sir Kenneth Grange at the front and 43198 at the rear, the very 1st power car built and the very last together, a fitting tribute. Catering has always been not great at weekends which is a shame, but first class at weekends is normally cheaper. But I love the HST and the old coaches. There so much comfier and the squeaks and rattles are also what makes it . But the best is what you mentioned. The doors and opening them from outside and slamming them shut. These trains went at 135-140 mph on many occasions *in service* before limiters. 140mph was reached on the 'billiard table' on the London to Bristol Parkway route, and London to York. 130-135mph was reached more often. Those days are sadly long gone. London-York was done in 1 hr 40mins on a couple of occasions I was on them. Now everything is bureaucratised into the ground and if they have any more change of crews on a journey, we may as well give up!

    You don't need Wi-Fi on a HST because the windows will easily let in a good strong 3G/4G signal from the mobile networks. The 3G/4G mobile signals will probably be way faster than any sort of on-train Wi-Fi system in the UK. The same cannot be said about the HST's "successor", the Class 222 (and 220/221 in other parts of the UK).

    Years ago I was amazed to see modern HST with outward opening doors on TV shows. In Victoria, only the wooden cars BPL and the dreadful BCPLs had outward opening doors and were phased out around 1980 after someone fell out. We used to say BPL stood for Bouncing Passenger Lounge. The Victorian system is broad guage and these cars were slighly narrower in case two passing trains had doors open they wouldn’t contact. The Queensland system also used wooden cars with outward opening doors and you can see on crossing loops that the narrow guage tracks were spaced far enough so that open doors on passing trains wouldn’t connect. Still I imagine given the speeds the HSTs did that the doors would be electronically locked.

  • @johnd6487

    @johnd6487

    It’s many years ago, but as I recall it, the locking mechanism was retro-fitted to the slam doors on most British trains including the 125’s. (I’m not sure about the London commuter stock that had doors all along the coaches, I wouldn’t be surprised if they wangled some sort of exemption as you’ll only find footage of them with the doors being opened while the train is still coming to a stop) They were put in as a safety measure following an inquiry into an accident. Subsequent refits of the interior of the coaches makes them look ‘designed in’ but in older unrefurbished stock the display to indicate the door was openable is very clearly a bolted on upgrade.

    I’m reminded of a minor incident at Sunshine where I was on a special made up of wooden BPL cars with outward opening doors, the platform sloped downwards and the track had a slight lean and the train moved slightly and an open door got caught on the platform. The guard had the train set back so the door could be closed. It could not be closed by a person until the train had been moved. St. Pancras Station would be worth a guided tour ; what a fantastic station. And those doors on the train that open outwards (you call them slam-doors ?) that is so British. Just like in the movies. The price is certainly fair and yes those seats look comfy. I imagine EMR does not offer weekend food service because of the low ridership; the people catering would cost more than they bring in. There were very few people in First Class, I trust there were more in the other cars. Once again Dylan an excellent review. Ah, yes! I enjoyed a brief journey from Sheffield to Nottingham aboard one of these HSTs back in September 2018 and recall the first class interior and comfortable seats. Pity I wasn't going any further on that train. It's a pity that these particular sets are not being upgraded as they appear extremely well presented. That said there are probably lots of unseen wear and tear items that rate them too costly to retain and upgrade for disabled access versus the option of total fleet renewal. Thanks for showing the full external profile of the Renaissance Hotel at St.Pancras. It would be nice to see some of the interior, though I fear you don't yet have the clout and network of that fellow Portillo, who did do a brief insight on one of his travelogues. I'm sure your time will come! Keep up the good work. Cheers from Michael downunder.

    Someone did say that before covid happened, EMR was planning to do a railtour as the last HST service. Not sure if it is happening still. Obviously depends on how Covid is, when the HSTs do retire. But at least you got around 3 years for that to happen as the 810's should be in service in 2023.

    Got to say great video and got to admit I have one new thing today. I didn't realise there was another entrance exits for London St Pancras next to the hotel. Pre-covid I pretty much used to use the entrance/exit on the bottom level on Euston Road. I guess when I'm next in London I have to try this entrance. Regarding the lounge, I have heard they may be reopening them in the few weeks, however I suspect they will limit the number of people in or/and limit how long you can spend in there. The buffet/weekend freebies they are coming back however likely to be limited. This is due to EMR using RG staff for the weekend 1st class, and the RG staff are currently furloughed (hence why there's no standard trolley on weekdays). Also I would say I'm surprised that people aren't either wearing facemasks or/and social distancing when it comes to the gateline bit of the video, but honestly I'm not really surprised, given how people aren't fully taken the virus seriously. I am surprised that Coach F (the buffet car) has LNER moquette/leather material for its seats, despite not being a LNER carriage. 12:51 EMR carriages are probably the worst ones for squeaking, and the ride quality to me isn't the best (like basically bouncing at 125mph). Honestly I seen people attempt to have phone calls in the vestibule areas, and I do wonder how they do it. I know the Angel sets (ex-GC) are a lot better though currently only one set (DY21) is out so you don't have much of a choice when it comes to finding a journey with it. I haven't been on a LNER one yet but I would expect the noise/ride quality will be like EMR carriages or hopefully fingers cross like the angel sets. The kinda good thing about train travel during the pandemic is that people aren't paying extra for 1st class (as you no longer get any benefits, or if you get freebies, its less than what you would get pre-covid). I did a XC journey. No one in 1st class and when I bought my ticket standard was more expensive than 1st by an extra £5. So I seen it as XC giving me a £5 to have my own private coach. I did talk to the guard and apparently no one came in 1st class since the journey started in Edinburgh (I boarded at Derby). 15:39 To answer your question. As mentioned in my buffet/freebie comment earlier, EMR (and during EMT days), RG staff were employed to do a weekend buffet service, so as they are furloughed EMR can't offer a weekend service (which is only really a biscuit and hot drink/cold drink.) P.S. EMR will deny this but on weekend services, in 1st you can go up multiple times for the freebies (obviously don't go up enough times to clear the RG guy out).
