EMR First Class Review | Sheffield to London St Pancras | Class 222 Meridian
East Midlands Railway has been using its Class 222 Meridian units on the Sheffield to London route for years. Although these trains are due to be replaced by Hitachi's Intercity family trains in the next few years, I've decided to take a look what the current trains have to offer in First Class and to see how different they are to new trains in the future.

Good video though just some comments but also some extra info too. 4:14 Unlike LNER and avanti, EMR doesn't run the 1st class towards the London End. Its basically 50/50 if 1st is front or back, which also compilates things when running as doubles as either its all in the middle or at both ends, or a mixture. 4:26 the Dimming of the lights isn't something the train crew does, its part of the energy saving mode the 222s has. Usually happens when the driver takes their keys out at the end of the journey. 11:50 Derby was also served by Northern (1 train a day each way) until the recent May Timetable where Northern no longer serves Derby. In fact the only time you see a Northern Train is when it does its ECS move as the 5Y18 0807 Sheffield to Nottingham. 0844 at Derby. 18:37 wi-fi is always rubbish on trains. When I asked one train manager they said that because EMR aren't investing in the 222s (as they are going early 2024), wifi is pretty much hit and miss on some units. The same TM pretty much said that's why half of the time seat reservations don't work as the electronics on the systems are failing because of lack of investment.
Interesting review Max. I travel this route once or twice each month but in standard class. A couple of years back I used to travel in first but found other than a little more space, it wasn't really a first class experience. First class advance tickets can be reasonable for off peak journeys but I feel comfortable enough in standard and can happily work if I pick a table seat. Plus my company prefers us to be sensible with the fares we choose 🙂 With most rail operators the food service is considered "complimentary" and I have found EMR is on a par with Cross Country, pretty dreadful. LNER has been the exception with some very good food options, particularly their Dish and Dine menus, although which you'll get is not guaranteed. I now base my ticket choice solely the comfort of the journey. EMR standard is plenty comfortable. One thing to add is delay repay, EMR is a PITA. I haven't had to make many claims over the years but a few months back there were issues on that line. Not EMR's fault but we sat at Derby for an hour and half, EMR comms was we don't know what's happening and eventually our train was cancelled. Our delay repay claim was denied despite sending them copies of the ticket but when we appealed asking how we make a claim with the ombudsman it did get paid. I've had two track related issues affecting LNER, first I clicked a delay repay button on the app and was paid in a couple of days. The second was more complicated and they emailed me to say I was eligible for delay repay, clicked a link and full fare refunded quickly.
Enjoyable video Max and as usual informative. Will be good when all the restrictions on food service are dropped so First Class is more worth the extra. Small drink and biscuit hardly qualifies as food.
I had to ride this because of LNER line failure. It was nice
Train is I'm eco mode so only 1 coach has engine running supplying hotel power for 110volt systems. Most coaches will.be on emergency lighting until the train is fired up fully.
Nice video! Haven't done EMR for a while but trying them out from Liverpool to Nottingham and then to St Pancras. Usually they offer sandwiches so it was a bit odd you only got a biscuit.
Wonder why the EMR trains don’t have automatic announcements of stations rather than having manual announcements from the train manager?
Interesting video with the interior of the station and the train on this route!

Does the class 222 tilt?
Was it worth the money. Thinking of travelling to London from Sheffield with my partner. £203.20 return for us both ?

I’d say if the difference between Standard and First is less than £25 per ticket in one direction, then go First! 🙂

I have been on the Class 222 Meridian DEMU and the seats are quite comfortable and the whole train is beautiful. But unfortunately they are to be replaced by the Class 810 Aurora that is planned to be in service from mid next year along with the Class 180 Adelante DMU and Class 43 Mk3 HSTs.
