I've brought a few old batteries back to life. That battery acid was really dirty, sometimes sludge will settle to the bottom of the battery and create a short circuit which can discharge the battery internally. I usually charge the battery as much as I can, then shake it to mix the sludge with the water / acid , then drain and discard the old acid. I then fill the battery half full of distilled water and shake it up again, repeating this process until the water is clear. I then fill the battery with distilled water and charge on high for a few hours, dump the water one last time, then fill the battery with fresh acid that I purchase from an auto parts store. I then slow charge the battery for a couple of days. This method has often worked for me.

@The Inquisitive mind I first clean the cells with water then i clean the plates with baking soda solution until i see no reaction in the cells ( 2 to 3 times ).I wash one time with tap water and one with deionised water . I fill the cells with new electrolite solution ( the old one always is not so strong we need , so i use it for cleaning ).

After draining it (super dirty), i would get some baking soda water and CAREFULLY fill each cell, close it and CAREFULLY SHAKE IT and empty it. Repeat until you get that gunk out and off the plates. Then, instead of putting the old acid back, heat up a quart of distilled water and mix in about 150mL (2/3 cup) epsom salt and put THAT in. THEN try it. Plate cleaning is 'Super Necessary' on that battery.

So I have re-conditioned quite a few 12V batteries, even fixed a dead cell in a few of them, I'll let you in on a little secret. There's only about 30% acid in car batteries. Easily neutralized with a liberal amount of baking soda. Once you drain the electrolytes from the cells, I recommend a water and baking soda solution be poured into the cells, and then you should go bowling with the battery for a few minutes. If you have a gentle hill to roll them down even better. Make sure no rocks or trees are around to damage the lead posts. After bowling, dump out the baking soda solution and give it a rinse with DISTILLED or PURIFIED water only, the less contaminants the better. When you've rinsed the battery thoroughly, it's time to fill it with a new electrolyte. My secret formula is 1lb pure Epsom salt and 1 gallon distilled water. Mix together while distilled water is warm or hot to dissolve the salt fully. Let cool to room temperature, and fill cells until plates are completely covered. Charge overnight, and check voltage in the morning. If any don't hold at least 12V, you may need to go bowling some more, or cycle it with a load/charge cycle for a few hours, or over-charge it for a little while. Careful overcharging the battery though, as the batteries CAN explode if charged too much. I recommend a smart charger as well, one that will detect faulty batteries so you don't waste time charging a dead cell only to have to throw it around again and charge it all over. I'll post a video soon of bringing a battery back to life, I've recently acquired 2 that I have yet to do anything with. You'll get to see it from start to finish

A battery has enough amps in it to kill you, and volts. Your skin resistance is what saves you from being shocked, but it can still happen if you don't know what you're doing. Id rather you have the right info and be safe about it, it helps the environment too

Hi My Placehouse. I know you've got some heat from some commentors about the possibility of a battery explosion but I guess for anyone who has never experienced one, including most people seeing this and other similar videos, they may not quiet understand what that means. I survived one on my boat. It went off like a hand grenade when I attempted to start the boat. I was blown out of my seat, sprayed with acid and showered with shards of plastic casing some of which embedded in my back. There was smoke but no fire. I was disoriented, burnt from acid, and suffering pain from injuries. With no battery I could not radio for coastguard help. My cellphone must have blown over the side because I never found it. It took me some time to get over the immediate shock but it was another hour or so before I successfully waved down another boat for help. Fortunately, my back was turned to the battery otherwise I could have lost my sight. It was also luck that my injuries did not involve severed arteries. Cause of explosion was most likely, low acid level from overcharging and possibly a cracked post from the subsequent swelling of the battery. As soon as the current went through the post on engine start, it sparked across the post crack and exploded the hydrogen filled case. All lead acid batteries generate hydrogen gas. That's what they do. Sparks either in or near the battery, however they are created, can and will result in an explosion with possibly devastating consequences. I never want to experience that again and I sure don't wish it on anyone else. So everyone, please be careful with these video's. They give some good ideas and we all appreciate the efforts made to present these processes to us, but don't follow them blindly. Do your research before trying this at home !

Some of the Sulfuric acid has turned into Lead Sulfate and not returning back to Sulfuric acid... Do you need to Attempt to charge the batteries first before this procedure to revert some of the composition back to acid so you can extract the majority back?

Dude, I just did this the other day. I found the best way to filter the acid is to leave it sit for a day or so, then filter it through a coffee filter. This way most of the dirt settles to the bottom. The acid was almost crystal clear after filtering it this way.

Dude, I'm all for DIY stuff but why would you wash it out into a tub and down into a public drain? That lead is toxic and goes back into the environment.

very little lead will come off from the cells, its a solid its not gonna dissolve in water. Very little if any lead went into the water. The city water already has lead so whats the difference anyways use a filter.

I must admit, that I never had any luck with this.

Lessons to learn ...and AVOID ! Wear protective gloves, goggles and old clothing which will be not be worn except for garage use later. You were shorting the battery at eye level RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE !. Batteries give off explosive gasses and that hot wire and sparks could have exploded the battery. Draining and filtering OLD acid does not help. If you rinsed out the battery with distilled water and added FRESH ACID ( electrolyte )then it may have charged better but if the plates are "sulphated " then a "DESULPHATION / charge " would help to clean the lead plates. J K

Let it settle for a day and then pour off the clear stuff that rises to the top into your filter. Also, when you're rinsing out the battery rock it back and forth and attempt to get the broken down lead out of the bottom where it might be shorting the plates. Then rinse and repeat a few times. That black gunk is broken down lead and needs to be recycled. You could try turning a battery like this into an alum battery. I've used alum batteries with a dead cell to run lights and things that are less than 12 volts. For example a 10 volt battery will be less than ten volts once converted to Alum and can be used for some 9 volt devices and many 9 volt and less devices if you use a buck converter to reduce the voltage to the voltage of the device you're trying to run. Note: if you try to run things that draw a lot of power on an alum battery with a dead cell you will have to check the water level a lot because the dead cell will go dry much faster than a good cell. For low amp draw like LED lights you won't have to check the water level as often. Lead acid batteries converted to alum are actually powerful batteries. They can be discharged virtually to zero volts without major harm to the battery, whereas a lead acid battery can only be discharged about 50 percent. They discharge differently than a lead acid battery. More like a NiCad battery but without the "memory" issues. Also, alum batteries don't like to sit idle for long periods of time. They like to be cycled. I started a Facebook group a few years ago to discuss alum batteries and similar topics. I ended up expending it into a diy / self-reliance group. Acid is way better in films :-) in real life it stings, and start to hurt, and you wach it off and it's gone. There are way worse acid, but battery acid is about that level... don't get it in your eyes.. I have not tried that,, but would not recommend trying.

I find that dropping it on the floor and kicking the shit out of it revives a dead cell sometimes. Done it to my last 2 leisure batteries last year and they like new now. They used to charge to 12.6 then drop after 5 minutes to 10.8. I think a piece of lead shorted the cell out touching the neg and positive plates

I haven't had luck with reconditioning batteries. If you take the whole top off the battery? You Will see most of the plates get warped and touch. Plates are thin and very fragile. Cheers from Australia

I agree. By way of comparison, deep cycle batteries have much heavier plates and I would think bringing them back to life might have more success. Obviously, the heavier the battery, the more lead it has, the more likely the plates are less likely to warp.

I think That there is always a critical issue with the acid filter and Epson salt battery videos. The acid is diluted as you are certain to loose some in transfers and you can never get all the rinse water out. In the Epson salt techniques, there is no way to get the acid concentration in the narrow range you need for proper function.

Since you already drained the sulphuric acid out it is very possible to CONVERT the lead-acid info a ALUM batterie ! just replace the acid with a solution of water and Calcium Aluminium Sulfate (150 gr in 1 liter water) , this wil convert the batterie permanently in one witch will give lower CCA (cold cranking amps) and also a nominal voltage of around 12.00 volt fully charged but wil last for many years without sulphating again! Also you can discharge these batteries till a lower voltage than a lead acid without doing them any harm, in practice the working range is between 9 and 12 volts even lower is not a real problem except the recharging time is getting longer.... best usage for a ALUM batteries is NOT to crank your car, but ideal for solar-deep-cycle use, for instance LED lighting and to power your HAM radio etc, etc. best way to charge these is with a true PULSE charger for example a BEDINI style charger , the charcing voltage can be taken high until 15.3 volts after that the voltage will drop to about 12,2 volts without a load fresh from the charger, as soon as you draw power from the batterie it wil drop to around 11 volts, at that time the batteries is considered about 50 percent discharged, normally with a lead acid based chemistry you must STOP and recharge the batt, with a ALUM you can discharge much deeper till say 80 percent without damage! The only thing is that the battery can freeze when used outside in very cold weather ,so for automotive use this is not so ideal for the northern country’s, but for stationary use (solar, electronics, backup, etc) used inside this is no problem any whey. try it , i think you will be amazed at the longevity of this type of battery’s. one more thing: please expose of the no longer needed old ACID in a responsible way!

I poured the acid out of my battery. I then cut the cells out. melted the lead and boiled the water out of the sulfuric acid. what were you trying to accomplish with washing out the acid from your battery? just so you know, if you were trying to recharge the battery use distilled water. the chlorine and sulfuric acid don't like each other.

Ahhh. Okay. I tested with a good battery, drained the sulfuric acid and water, refilled with regular tap water and recharged. I have drained the battery 2 times and tested. Even using chlorinated water I am holding a full charge. It was just a test, I am concentrating sulfuric acid and collecting the lead for casting bullets. The acid is for refining gold and silver. I was just wondering what you were trying to accomplish.

Thats an acid meater . Its only tells you if you the right amouth of acid . In batterys its 70% water and the rest is acid . So you sucking up water with the acid at lest your are filtering it to get the crap out of the battery .

you shouldn't put back the old fluid, use distilled water with added baking soda on it. pour in to your cells to clean all of your plates inside the cell, and drain again. repeat the process until the fluid is clear. then dissolve an Epson Salt to distilled water while you stir under low fire setting of your burner, set aside to cool down. then charge for about 24- 36hrs. in 2amps. setting without covering the battery. you can test the battery voltage before charging or you can check every 12 hrs., check on youtube video for measurement. there's a lot of videos about this and always safety first.

ade sag it's just not so easy man, to put the baking soda or powder in the battery cells. Only the practicals give the right results. What we think we say is not always correct. The quantity of the much baking soda can damage the cells 100% .I have the practical proofs too.

The real problem is in your charging method. you need to zap the battery with a larger current over and over. on and off you might say. or Pulse charging. look up pulse chargers that the military use. also good pdf files on google will lead you in the right direction.

Don't worry,, I did this,, it did not work,, no one ever needs to do it again.

You have to remove the water from the accid. What I do I put the accid in the slow cooker outside overnight with no lid. Than put it back to the battery. You did not changed the coffee filter, it would be faster filtering out the slush.

Interesting. So basically you boil off the water, huh? I thought about that, but haven't done the research yet. Outside seems to be a good idea though, since sulfur and other fumes aren't really something you want to breath. I'm guessing that freezing might also work.

Don't throw away the battery, keep charging the battery without covering the holes on the battery top for the acid to react better. you need to keep charging the battery 48 hours on 10 amps slow charge to wake up the defective cells. it is such a large battery so continue charging the battery, give it longer time to work. You are doing well, I enjoyed watching your video. It will work

Sulfuric acid does not get 'old'. Total waste of money replacing it. Just filter it, but with a better set up than show here, so it is done in one hit. The Epsom salts simply naturalizes the remaining acid inside the battery. It's only benefit is that the foaming reaction helps dislodge any loose lead sulfate sludge. The down side is it can just as easily dislodge lead oxide from the plates and cause a short. Shorts can be removed by giving the battery a blow, BUT these can just as easily make new shorts. You are more likely to have luck hitting the battery if you do it before removing the acid so it can cushion the plates. Some sort of mechanical vibration is probably better than than actual blow.

you cant just rinse it you have to clean the lead plates to remove tarnish so the electrons can flow again that's why they stop working. I have a 4 year old car battery and the fluid is still clear so no idea why your is so dark. You could of used a bunch of filters too to catch more junk. You have to charge the battery a long time after restoring it to check it then wait a day and see what the voltage drop is.

Well if you want to repair a battery you should use NEW sulfuric acid 35% concentrated. Then, look for the terminals, if they are totally corroded, you can try to find new lead terminals, but I have no idea where you could find it. Anyway, if you are skillful enough you can just make them by casting lead in a plate format, like a "net." You will see how it is when you open it up, or you can check on youtube. Ah and if it's totally corroded and you don't want to change your lead terminals just throw your battery in the garbage... Don't forget to destroy the acid and the lead before throwing it in the garbage!!!!!!!!!

I have had incredibly good success in revitalizing batteries with MgSO4 (epsom salt) You make a slurry with the salt and distilled water. Spoon a tablespoon in each cell... replace caps and invert and shake. Turn back right side up and top off cells with distilled water. I needed to charge it over an hour or two but RAPIDLY discharge it. I used two halogen headlights to do this. The first cycle it would discharge in 2 minutes. The second cycle it lasted 7 minutes. The 3rd cycle it took 18 minutes. The 4th cycle it would take 90 minutes to discharge. This was on a battery that was dead for 4-5 years and in bad shape. I believe the theory is to remove the coating that developed on the plates. Give it a try and you will be surprised. Cheers

How exactly did you discharge it? I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how to discharge mine. It's in my garage. I've attached a household lamp to it. One wire to each terminal and it won't light the bulb.

Black lead is always last on and first off when it comes to lead acid batteries.

Why you dont used the strange syringe with which you picked acid from red bucket to coffee jar ?That thing is invented to meassure electrolyte density,.. And If you missin 2,1 of voltage that proves thht one cell is bad... 12,8 Volts / 6 cells = 2,13 Volts each. If you had 10,6 one cell is bad,...

Why fix all cells when there is only one dead cell? If that cell is physically broken, messing with the electrolyte won't do anything.

@@MyPlayHouse Having around 10v on the battery means a completely dead cell - Lead plate broken or shorted. Nothing can be done for that apart from sending it to the battery rebuilders in india/pakisan. However a weak cell would be fixable through high voltage or chemicals. Playing with the electrolyte is not useful because a lot of the acid got converted into lead sulphate. If they are converted back to acid later, it would mess up the chemical balance of the replacement electrolyte.

Maybe charge battery at 20 volts 1 amp for 72 hours after refilling the acid but putting it back into the battery might work but for 24 hours be very careful when doing this as you know the batteries will gas in a release gases when charging and when using the extremely careful with this the process.

I use batteries like this for my electric scooter to get around I have solar panels and solar panels come with the minerals that build up on the plate and reduce the expectancy and keep the battery strong when I use it may take a long time but my charger for my show tired than normal charge and it takes a long time to cook Epsom salt but I use epsom salt and lemon juice at the breakdown the crystals of soft uric acid and try to break the film on the plates that prevent electric activity to increase the electrical connectivity and usually that works.

Good thing you didnt drop that battery in the tub. Big splash up.

And this guy reads and replies to all his comments :-) tap water is more clean than most bottled water here. Yes shorting the battery can help if one of the cells is shorted, running a high current through it,, can in some few cases "burn" that away. Yes 11 minutes,, it did not take me longer to realise that the experiments I had done ,, did not help,, battery still broken. Time to move on.

Do not short a battery with wire unless you want to kill it completely watch some other videos how to restore a battery IF your battery it is not completely garbage and please get some gloves

You're absolutely right. As the battery is discharged or charged, the lead changes states. There is lead, lead oxides, and lead sulfates. Some sticks to the plates (grids), which you want. Some falls to the bottom, which won't be useful again. Shorting the battery not only causes the normal discharge reaction, but generates a lot of heat. That can force the cells to swell and break, warp the plates, and damage the separator between the plates. You won't burn off lead that may be shorting some plates. That can't happen until the liquid acid has boiled off. Needless to say, you don't want that happening either. It might melt a little if it's far enough above the acid level, but that would also mean the acid is too low. The cleaning cycle could theoretically make a mostly dead battery kind of work, but the problem is usually the fact that the plates have degraded. The only fix for that is to recast the plates (grids), and refill the holes with the correct lead paste and charge it. The physics and chemistry is really interesting. I only found this video because I was looking for a better method to clean the lead out of the acid for new batteries. Well, at least I see the acid didn't destroy the coffee filter. :)

Your right, the first sign of high amp draw would have eliminated it as a candidate for the rare but possible occurrence of low draw sulfation. This is rare and was evident immediately this was not the case. Look up some info on chemistry and metal oxidation if your looking for a remedy.

Don't try this at home kids. Only trained professionals should attempt!

Short circuiting a battery on a shelf full of chemicals is a good way to cause an explosion . Baking Soda neutralizes battery acid for disposal . You need an old school tool used in rejuvenation of batteries called a hydrometer . You reused old acid so you need to know the battery acid level in the battery acid . Example ; When using new battery acid , you don't use 100% acid . The general fill is 35% acid and the rest of the cell is filled with distilled water only . You never ever put regular water inside a battery . There's heavy metals in public water . This public water having metals causes the cell to short circuit releasing any charge within . In short summary , you actually killed this battery . To properly Shock the battery you need a battery booster that has a 200amp boost setting and a manual booster , never use the new electronic boosters , they won't work . The old manual boosters usually have a timer on them but don't rely on the timer because the timers usually don't work correctly . You can usually find one for around $150 U.S.D. Never apply a chargers clamps while charger is on . Place clamps and then turn on charger . These micro sparks are known to cause explosion . A cell isn't considered dead among the cells unless you have a voltage of 10v. Each battery cell holds around 2volts . That battery had plenty of life left . Hope this finds you well .

@@MyPlayHouse If the battery had a dead cell , it would have read 10volts , not 12volts . Each hole is 2volts . You cannot tell completely if a cell is dead or not unless you test that cell with a hydrometer . A hydrometer shows you if the correct acid level is in the cell . What you're calling a dead cell is almost never a dead cell . Its only build up of corrosion between plates inside . This is easily removed by shocking the battery with a 200amp battery booster . You run the booster for 15minutes and then wait for 1 hour to let booster cool down . you do this until the amp meter comes up to the Batterys cold cranking amp rating ... That little meter is $25 on Amazon .. You must understand only 35% acid goes in each cell and rest is distilled water . So over time many people add more and more distilled water . this weakens the acids ability to hold a charge . this is what a hydrometer measures and tells you if the acid level versus distilled water is within range for the acid to hold the charge . The cell is made up of only flat lead plates inside . its like staking quarters 1/4" apart but once the corrosion builds between the two plates then there's no charging the acid . This corrosion is just like the corrosion that builds up on the top of the terminals that we can physically scrub off but inside it needs big shock with a 200 amp battery booster and it will all come off and be like new again .. It does cost a little bit to get the stuff to do what I speak of but pays itself back when you fix only one battery ... $9.00- hydrometer $145- 200amp battery booster $25- amp meter ... People will give you their old batteries often or sell them very cheap to get rid of them .. So you can build a battery bank for very little money . A battery is nothing more than an electrolysis process ... A good way to see it visually is to see how they make the hydrogen set ups for cars or the colloidal silver process ... These all use electrolysis but you can see how the others are reacting because people make those usually in clear jars ... I'm very glad you haven't glowed yourself up making sparks in your play house ..

There's a lot to try to explain but is simple after you understand . 1st I will say that was a perfectly good battery . 2nd you need a good hydrometer that tells percentage of acid . the one you used in other video didn't have percentage readings . 3rd you don't seem to understand how your battery works . There is almost never an actual Bad Cell . For example , you said in other video Cell #2 .... Okay ; that ONLY means the electrolytes ( battery acid ) isn't able to keep its charge . Its like oil in car loosing its viscosity and turning to black water , battery acid looses its ability to keep charge . Your charge is kept in the liquid , not the lead plates inside . So you do not put full battery acid inside cell , this will not work , it will not hold charge . you must use 35% acid and fill 65% distilled water . Another time a cell won't hold its charge is when someone has put to much battery acid or has added to much distilled water . I'm excited to see someone else rebuild a battery and use for power . This is a great thing .... This is what I do so I like to help . I know this battery may be gone but you can still do this and save so much money . We have saved hundreds of dollars rebuilding Batterys for our solar power . We haven't seen a battery we cannot bring back to full life yet ...
