Empower: Protecting Children with Disabilities Through SSI

Children from families with low incomes and limited resources who have disabling conditions that seriously limit their ability to function on a daily basis are entitled to receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Though the eligibility requirements are exacting and the payments are relatively modest, SSI benefits for children with disabilities may be subject to federal budget cuts. This video presents portraits of four mothers and their children, portraits that illustrate the vital importance of SSI in protecting vulnerable children with disabilities by empowering them through therapy, treatment, and care to become, in the words of one mom, "the most functional independent individuals" they can possibly be.
