I remember the first time i saw this video, i was looking for AOE 3 videos and when i saw this i couldn't believe this was a game, coming from AOE 2 and EE this graphics where to much for me at the time XD. "You can see the crew on the ship? this can't be a game".

That is normal, distant soldiers lose visual quality the farther from the camera they are to keep the framerate steady. Close soldiers are fully rendered while those far away or off camera normally turn into 2D sprites. That trick has been used in practically all games in general (dating back to even Mario 64), it is just more noticable in Total War.

Cool naval battles! I've always wanted those.

sometimes depends which time period you like best, but as the total war series goes on you'll be able to do more in the games in general.

I must say I used to always ignore critic review from IGN until now this was probably the best review ive read/seen/heard etc.. you list what your opinion is and with that you also explain the goods and bads perfect

Install Darth mod if you don't like the AI or units etc.

All Total War Games have auto resolve.

@skolvold adjust your "unit detail" slider to a higher setting in the advanced video options menu.

Empire. In Empire you have more options and a WAY larger map. But it depends if you are interested in the napoleonic wars then you should get napoleon. If not then Empire Total War.

Once you play NTW, you would find the vanilla unbearable, esp battles. Music, Graphic, Optimization...

Ottomans are really weak in Empire. It's absurd. They were an unmatched power in 1700.

prior to bayonet tech the Osman militia could melee European, and you are given grape shot from the start...Late game it posts the best line infantry in the game, however it could only be produced in large settlement. .you could not play the way normal European power does in the beginning, but more like MTW2 style...

Actually the Ottomans were a dying power by the 1700s. A hundred years later, they lost almost all of their Northern Territories, Greece, and some other small territories. It's military also became extremely outdated, poorly equipped, and trash by European and many world standards.

Jazz4Dayz​ I must be missing something. Empire: Total War was not a great game. It was alright, but made great by Darthmod. The base game, however, is not worthy of the praise it is given here.

I bought this yesterday and I can't even enjoy it, when I go to play a battle the game is all laggy and has random flashes every 5 seconds and sometimes it makes my computer reboot. 😑

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 gHz (upgrading soon) Nvidia Quadro FX 1800 768mb 4 GB RAM Windows 7 64-bit It's weird because I can run Medieval 2 TW and Rome TW on max settings with giant battles and no lag, I can also run Rome 2 which makes it even weirder. I also found out that I can only do extremely small battles on Empire and that's it, I've also fixed the screen flashing in the menus.

Ok as someone who has played the game for hundreds of hours and finished all campaigns may I just call bullshit on this review, the game is a completely soulless tiring mess with no charisma, no polish, no good ideas of its own, completely inept AI and underdeveloped possibilities

For me, I like Shogun 2 the best but I know most people would say either medieval 2 or rome 1

Squidward Von Gatto I hate Shogun 2. The only good things about it are the combat animations and the graphics, which aren't the best things in Total War games. The map is small (obviously, being Japan), which means that you are going to be in the same boring climate forever, rather than fighting in deserts or other cool places, there are pretty much no naval invasions (again, obviously) which make the game even more boring there are very few factions, very few units, and one of the worst parts is that almost every castle you siege looks EXACTLY the same, with only like 2 variations of the structures and a few variations of the map. I almost forgot to say that the battles are so easy, and always so quick. I don't think I ever had a battle over 10 min, while in Empire and other Total War games I've had battles that were over 30 min, making them so much more epic, and way more worth watching the replays since they were truly unique, compared to Shoguns identical battles. All of these things make the game get boring incredibly quick. Shogun 2 is my least favorite.

Yes, I could also see some Company of Heroes-esque style if they made a modern combat variation of Total War. It would be nice to control units that just split up into more units as the fighting grows intense (battalions, platoons, squads, etc). Only thing is, for maps and battles the scale that Total War usually puts them at, they would need to make almost everything on the field cover, to support hundreds of troops in a firefight. But seeing AI who actually think for themselves would be cool.

Great review, first time i've agreed on everything with IGN. Navy fights are the true gem of this game as he has already said, these battles really need tatics unlike fighting with unit where you can just go with lady luck, attacking from both sides, turning at the right time, getting the wind on you're side, loved it. Looking forward to see what they are doing with Shogun 2 :D, anyone know if they are keeping naval battles? it's just japan had some amazing ships for there time

@BroncoLion I will. In Napoleon you can play a campaign as 4-5 factions when in Empire you can play a campaign as the factions you actually want to play as. I would buy Napoleon if it would have a grand campaign, since I really don't care about MP.

@MatthewBissonnette88 Yeh it would be cool, but i heard Napoleon is the last in the series, and it would be kinda hard to do a WW1TW and WW2TW, because they wouldn't be fighting in the formations that they had hundreds of ears earlier, e.g, the french column, and the British 2 line formation.

@TheeAppleMann It does have the same way as hiding troops in forests but it doesnt have the bit where you can hide troops because of the weather and stuff, i think the formations of your troops on the battlefield hold together pretty well and like the guy said it has a great campaign but will take days to complete. For those interested it's on sale on GamersGate for £2.50 atm.

It would be a challenge fir the designers, but aircraft combat could be handled abstractly like the naval combat in the older games, each turn could be a few weeks to implement the increase of the mobility for armies, and the real time battles would be between individually selectable vehicles and platoons of infantry. It would cool to see a Total War game in the 20th century.

The next Total war might deal near the industral age. The pirates will be the comboys. There will be some what of automatic machine gun fire.

Definatly reccomended. There is a real sence of realism in this game in the battles and empire management. And the guy reviewing this is right, this game is extremely addictive.

@chalum30 might be a graphics problem. ETW can be demanding on your specs, but i guess it depends on what you have

@amoungthefree maybe so, but it's sticking to historical accuracy. After the middle ages, individual tax rates for each individual city was pretty much a relic of a bygone time, around the 16th century universal tax for a nation was widely adopted and made everything that much more organized, true this concept in a gameplay perspective may be arbitrary, it's merely sticking to historic accuracy economy wise.

I forgot to say this but I really like how the units have their own little duels with each other! Sadly my computer is not the best for playing this game, If I play it at medium then it works fine.

Looks pretty awesome. I'm thinking of buying this one instead of Napoleon:TW, because this one has much less restrictions.

If you can get both there well worth it (i have the game of the year edition which has both and all DLC and it was pretty cheap too) ... if you can only get one then choose based on what you prefer ... if you like large battles online or off get napoleon, if you like a good huge scale campaign get empire

@leerey14 depends. If you want a good campaign Napoleon is the way to go, but for the open, long lasting world domination things empire has so much more to it

The thing that I kind of protest about this game is that there are several countries that aren't shown in this game. For example, Brazil was colonized by the Portuguese in the 1500's, but the country wasn't shown. Philippines was discovered and colonized by Spain in the 1500's, but was also not shown. Europeans, especially the Portuguese, had contact with the Japanese like trade, but Japan too wasn't shown. But it would probably take more memory to run the game. Anyways, Empire was awesome :)

That's just how the nature of war changes really though.
