Empire and Economics: The Long History of Debt-Cancelation from Antiquity to Today

Join Dr. Michael Hudson, New Testament Scholar Dr. Aliou Niang and Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, Biblical Scholar and co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, for a discussion on the history of debt and what it means for our context today. Moderated by Shailly Gupta Barnes and the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights and Social Justice.
Debt plays a central role in upholding the economic and social order of the day. In the US, mounting debt and the crippling financialization of our lives is taken as fact. Our political leaders see no real problem and offer no serious solution. This was not always the case. Throughout antiquity, widespread debt-cancellation was understood as a moral and practical necessity. In a significant new book, …and Forgive Them Their Debts, economist Michael Hudson traces the biblical demand against debt and the long history of economic jubilees. Counter to dominant history and theology, Hudson reveals how the Bible itself is concerned most with the moral failure of economic systems, rather than personal sin.

linguistic gymnasium as a high school and Slavistics at University, here, in Serbia.. You'd probably call it "Major in..." in American University (College, sorry), but here, the whole program is centered around the subject of Slavic languages, mostly Russian. Just finishing it, even though I'm 32 and own a small bakery, making special yeastless breads.. Previously, I've finished one college, which makes me an "Engineer of Civilian Protection and Rescuing in Emergency Situations". I'm thinking of studying Economics since I like studying. Like studying at that level. Helps me organize my life, and I love to acquire new knowledge and insight about the World, but, actually, weirdly, I have never worked in a field related to my first college except making a survival and skiing school last Winter. College is not free anymore, but I can organize 600 USD per year somehow..Healthcare is still free, thank God.. So, I love history, and when I saw that you are a Bronze Age archeologist, I suppose you are well knowledgeable of the Chalcolithic. I'd love it if you could tell me how much is the Vinča culture represented and taught in the West? Really interests me because I was at Vinča yesterday and went to see the archeological site from 5700 BCE. although it is from the Neolithic, it was a culture that was smelting copper at the time..

I don't have much time to read, so I've been listening to Hudson for years now and he's my favorite. Steeve Keen is a genius in his own right and a Maverick too, but he's too academic for me to digest, sometimes he might as well be talking about Quantum Physics. But Doc Hudson talks in standard English about complex issues and always exposes the scams. Sadly, there's only 11k viewers since April. @Jon Dhoe Oh, I don't know. It seems to me that the translators and, thus, interpreters of the ancient texts into European languages were most definitely in service to the wealthy ruling classes who had no problem screwing over their own people. Even with the hullabaloo over the almost supernaturally-powered Jewish Banker folks like yourself go on about, someone took out those 'usurious' loans to become even more wealthy and oppress other non-Jews. But somehow only the supply-side of this false dichotomy is ever talked about!

Sir, your first sentence made me think! We(Muslims) call Islam a Abrahamic Faith. The usury subject is almost completely excluded when it comes to Muslims Scholars. And while i traveled to so called Islamic countries I found 90% of the banks were banks that offered/gave loans with usury connected. The odd thing about it was that people know about the corruption involved with that system, however they refuse to use debt cancellation, which Islam is deeply based upon! As a result we can now see that those countries are in deep economic destruction, war, famine, tribalism, racism, and democracy is not helping.

Yes but sins are dept... Din in Arabic means dept... You are given live and earth and all that's the responsability: If you do even a sin that hurt no one but yourself seemingly that's a sin that's a dept... And god can forgive that and give you energy to be good again and repair...but he can punish... It's not just about money... It's layers and layers deeper... A society can be for example very good and just but doesn't believe in god... Then what a dept, a wrath can come and destroy all... Be sure you built society on faith... How curious....... Yes, I remember first reading Michael Hudson when I was in college, in the 1960's or 1970's, and now at 84 years of age I find this masterpiece of historic interpretation by the author! I then discovered another classic book, "A World in Debt", from 1935, written by Freeman Tilden, which began to explain the currency devaluations I was witnessing in France and England in the late 1960's........ but which was anathema to American scholars and writers. I quickly learned of the Rothschild family and the history of banking. And curious indeed that I then got a job at Wells Fargo Bank and had access to the company library to further my studies........ In the early 1970's I thought the finale would come around 1975 as the money creation exploded -- never even to consider that it could possibly continue until this day, 47 years of inflation later, when American dollars are said to number over 30 TRILLION! Try to imagine a trillion dollars......... Yes, this situation should get very interesting very soon.........

The biggest problem with debt is INTEREST. The reason we are in a debt spiral is INTEREST. As we continue to procure more debt in order to pay off the initial debt, is not because we can't pay its PRINCIPLE amount, however when this principle amount continues to multiply in value, it ensures the creditors that demand is still high for their credit and "faith" in the Ponzi scheme is still strong, which ultimately translates into the creditor's acquisition of more riches, by means of seizing more homes, businesses, land, and other property. Among the wealthiest nations in the world, have been operating in a system that effectively prohibits interest. This system is none other than the Islamic banking system and those wealthy nations are of course the highly despised Arab Gulf States. To attribute their immense riches soley to fossil fuels is highly misleading

As someone who has been interested in history and especially the early part of "Human Civilization" in other words when we settled down into cities and towns. Marx argued the same thing in Capital and so have all socialists and derived from it communists. This system can't be maintained. It's to predator, it sucks out every bit of wealth from the poor towards the rich and compells us as the workers to extract more from our Planet. Our Planet and thereby Mother Nature are telling us to stop this crazyness and return or better reinvent our relations to one another and how we care for one another. Wonderful panel by the People's Forum NYC, I love how they build a movement and continue doing so based on community and a rejection of capitalism, Empire and concentrated power.

As another Crusade begins and we watch as lives are extinguisher to promote Usury, the concept of Moslem's banishment of Bankers and the Interest they live on, seems like a positive concept? Were the Crusades aware that they were fighting to promote Usury, or simply seeking Saladin Gold?

Contracts used to be Equal, meaning noth sides knew everything, both sides had means to enforce, and limits were stated and agreed to. That's the way contracts work. Nowadays, whenever a contract doesn't allow one side to completely enslave the other party, people call it "communism".

The god of gold 1 Kings 11:4 For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David. 1 Kings 11:7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon. Amos 5:26 You also carried Sikkuth your king And Chiun, your idols, The star of your gods, Which you made for yourselves. Acts 7:43 You also took up the tabernacle of Moloch, And the star of your god Remphan, Images which you made to worship; And I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’ 1 Kings 10:14 The weight of gold that came to Solomon yearly was six hundred and sixty-six talents of gold, 2 Chronicles 9:13 The weight of gold that came to Solomon yearly was six hundred and sixty-six talents of gold, Rev 13:17-18 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666. Exodus 32:30-33 Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. So now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! Yet now, if You will forgive their sin-but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written.” And the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book. Mark 11:15 So they came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. Luke 16:14 Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him. 1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 2 Timothy 3:2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Ezekiel 18:13 If he has exacted usury Or taken increase- Shall he then live? He shall not live! If he has done any of these abominations, He shall surely die; His blood shall be upon him. Ezekiel 22:12 In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take usury and increase; you have made profit from your neighbors by extortion, and have forgotten Me,” says the Lord God. Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Isaiah 52:3 For thus says the Lord: “You have sold yourselves for nothing, And you shall be redeemed without money.” kzread.info/dash/bejne/e5hq0bVsfJCqaaQ.html

It went like this.... IMHO.... Temples/monasteries got free money via donations/money exchange from citizens... lots of free money.... priests/religious leaders became de facto bankers... the ones Jesus ejected from the Temple. It's really a battle between socialism and fascism. The same story going on in the 2020s right now. Debt forgiveness = adjustment via socialism (wealth redistribution) but Romans became FASCISTS... no debt forgiveness, privitize everything, charge high debt, make everybody debt slaves, as long as possible.... When the game ran out... they started The City Of London... new world banker..until US Fed Reserve Took over 1914.. and Washington DC is the military weapons supplier, in exchange for world "protection" from US Aggression. ... all lots of free money. All wars are bankster wars.. because the war targets are not in our monetary system and our monetary system wants them extinguished.. ex: Libya Kadafi's crime? Putting irrigation all over the dessert, without US World Bank funds.. Hillary knows that is not allowed, so she took care of it. Follow the money. 5K yrs history in 500 words or less.

It's fine, but it's also a zero sum game, the amount of money put into bitcoin is all that you can get out of bitcoin. It doesn't produce anything, similar to normal money, but also doesn't inflate nearly as much. However, it is also decentralised, which makes it hard to control or stop transaction unless someone can find you seed phrase to your wallet, if it's in a exchange like coinbase, they can just tell coinbase to freeze your account. It Is however, only around a half a trillion in total value, so it's not anywhere near as big as the US dollar, so it is a lot more likely to move in value more.

And the false messiah antichrist will rise and be killed by the true one... Great tribulations ... Bring all the solutions you can think of... But all are not men of honor and god, it's too complicated and it's not just about money. There is a satanic take over the system of life based on sin dept and wrath deserving used as a right to infest our reality by demonic rulers from djins and Satans and their hosts on our reality.and the way to fight that back is first of all a wrath to kill most of humanity. And the rest must repent correct and fight back this satanic antichrist and Jewish cabalists..and it will happen and the messiah second coming is all about that etc.

So unless you want go back to monarchy I rather not be forgiving debt every four to 8 years. Just imagine the interest rates. I say stop FIDC and if a bank does something dumb. let them fail. Banks are government employees in my opinion. If they can't fail they can't compete.

The debt will never be paid. There is 3 times more debt than money in the world. The actual money system must be abolished a.s.a.p. With every new credit, it creates more debt than money. There is today no mechanism to create more money than debt. All debt and money must be cancelled and a new, balanced money system must come in place: Sovereign Currency.
