Retelling Japanese history in a narrative style, reshaping the legends of the Heian, Edo, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods with a modern perspective.
Explore the fascinating history of Japan's Heian period in our latest video! Delve into the intricate details of Emperor Kanmu's decision to move the capital to Heian-kyo (modern-day Kyoto) in 784 AD, marking the beginning of the Heian era. Discover the challenges he faced, including the assassination of the project leader Fujiwara no Tanetsugu, the failed attempt to establish Nagaoka-kyo, and the eventual successful relocation to Heian-kyo in 794 AD.
Uncover the dual focus of Emperor Kanmu's reign post-relocation: the continued development of Heian-kyo and the military campaigns against the Emishi people in the northeast. Learn about the significant strain these projects placed on Japan's resources, leading to widespread agricultural neglect and tax difficulties.
The video also delves into the internal divisions within Emperor Kanmu's cabinet, the establishment of the Kengyo Yushi system for monitoring government officials, and the self-sacrifices made by the imperial family to reduce government expenditure. Despite financial struggles, Emperor Kanmu is portrayed as a benevolent ruler.
Witness the intrigue and power struggles following Emperor Kanmu's death in 806 AD, including the ascension of Emperor Heizei and the subsequent power shift to Emperor Saga. The video highlights the bizarre turn of events involving former Emperor Heizei's health improvement and Emperor Saga's illness, leading to the Fujiwara clan's plot to reinstate Heizei, resulting in the Kusuko Incident.
Learn about Emperor Saga's efforts to prevent similar incidents by establishing the Kurando-dokoro, with Fujiwara no Fuyutsugu from the northern branch of the Fujiwara clan as the first head, marking the decline of the southern branch. The video also covers the introduction of new government positions outside the Taiho Code, reflecting a shift towards a uniquely Japanese version of the Tang system.
Discover the reasons behind Buddhism's limited political influence in Heian-kyo, thanks to the rise of monks Saicho and Kukai, who founded the Tendai and Shingon sects, respectively. Their teachings, rooted in esoteric Buddhism, differed significantly from the Nanto Rokushu, limiting the latter's influence in the new capital.
The video concludes with the power consolidation of the Fujiwara clan under Fujiwara no Yoshifusa and the significant events of the Heian period, including the abolishment of the Kentoshi missions to Tang China in 894 AD, signaling a shift towards a more insular Japan and the rise of Kokufu culture.
