This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

Nine inch Nails song but the lead singer of nin heard Johnny's version and said "this doesn't belong to me.... this belongs to Johnny Cash" so nin gave it to him. And the questions about the places the first one is a Johnny Cash museum and the house is his childhood home where him and his siblings grew up....he has a brother but he tragically died from working in a saw mill....the blade caught him and practically cut him in half. Johnny's dad blamed him for his brother dying because Johnny went fishing. And Johnny's so called "father" words were "God took the wrong son" and that really hurt Johnny

House of cash, the place you saw the inside of when they turned the lights on and the smashed record, like a storage or place people could come ect.. but as you wind down and start shutting down and locking things up, basically like you would a business that's closing, except this also was his life being shut down. Hence the closed to the public.having to take that walk of finalizing things, that closed to public sighn to me rings close to home as my father had to post it on his welding shop, still eery to me, stayed sealed like a tomb sadly, going in was like a time stop .

As already stated by others here the song you are looking for is "GOD'S GONNA CUT YOU DOWN" another great song similar is "WHEN THE MAN COMES AROUND" 95%of the lyrics are direct quotes from the BIBLE from Revelation, Daniel, Job and Acts. I'm assuming I'm older than you. Johnny Cash was a staple in our house. But I did grow up in a very musically diverse house. It was my 58-year-old mom that introduced me to Pearl jam when I was still in high school.

I believe 'The House of Cash' was a museum set up to honor his career, though I do not know the history of the structure itself. I believe it was abut the time Johnny retired to the Caribbean area that the museum was closed to the public and fell into disrepair. The state of its contents made a powerful backdrop for this version of this song.

I've read and interview with the video director where he mentioned that it was damaged in a flood and had been closed ever since. He didn't plan ahead to shoot the video there but it was a very lucky find.

I know you have reacted to a Tom Petty cover. Out of interest, the keyboards and guitar on this track are played by Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell from Tom Pettys band, together with another guitarist, Smokey Hormel.
