ABOUT:🔻
John R. Cash (born J. R. Cash; February 26, 1932 - September 12, 2003) was an American country singer-songwriter. Most of Cash's music contained themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption, especially in the later stages of his career.[5][6] He was known for his deep, calm bass-baritone voice,[a][7] the distinctive sound of his Tennessee Three backing band characterized by: train-like chugging guitar rhythms, a rebelliousness[8][9] coupled with an increasingly somber and humble demeanor,[5] free prison concerts,[10] and a trademark all-black stage wardrobe, which earned him the nickname the "Man in Black".[b]

"Hurt"
(originally by Nine Inch Nails)
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become
My sweetest friend?
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become
My sweetest friend?
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
thank you for all your support!

I consider this simple video to be the finest music video of all time. His daughter commented on seeing this video, "Dad, its like you're saying goodbye". He agreed with her. Johnny Cash's wife, June Carter Cash (seen in the video) died just a few months after the completion of this video and Johnny followed her a few months later. He was 71 when he passed on September 12, 2003.🙏

Johnny died 9/12/03. His wife, June Carter Cash, shown in the video, died 5/15/03, just months before Johnny. He was 71 when they filmed this in February of 2003. Cash transformed Trent Reznor's song. Along with the brilliant video, filmed in an old road side Johnny Cash museum, this is arguably the finest musical cover of any song ever. That Trent's lyrics were so deeply apt to Cash's life is phenomenal. And Johnny knew it was goodbye. June got to participate in and see the final video before she passed. And when Johnny closed the piano at the end he'd said his goodbyes. He was already ailing too. The back story. The haunting lyrics. Johnny's voice. June's presence. The video finesse. What an amazing piece of art. Blessings.

The physical signs of aging are subtle and as quickly as you notice them, you forget about them, or try to conceal them. But regret is the sign of aging that can never be buried. This was my 1st time seeing one of your videos, but it seems like you are genuinely happy and have made a nice life with your family. Therefore I hope any regrets you have are minor and easily remedied. Thanks for all you guys do and God bless!

This is actually a cover song of a Trent Razner song that was from the early 90s with his band Nine Inch Nails. It was about a young man losing himself to addiction where Johnny Cash turned it into a goodbye song. From a young, fragile mind to an old mind at the end of his life. When Trent heard this cover, he went on to say on lines of "that isn't my song anymore." He heard it and thought it was beautiful. We all did. Johnny Cash wasn't one of the best country artist, he was the best and one of the best artists of all genres. You should listen to the original version. I have to say, Johnny Cash has made some of the very best cover songs. From a ring of fire to Heart of gold to personal jesus and Hurt. The list can go on. The man made cover songs and made them his own. And yes. Ring of fire is a cover song. The original was written and sang by June Carter. June Carter Cash, I should say, Johnny's wife

Johnny Cash singing this song so close to his passing reveals deeper layers to a song that was already about addiction and depression by Trent Reznor. I have to imagine those themes resonated for Cash, as well, who had a well-documented history of addiction and his struggle with sobriety. "Everyone I know goes away in the end," takes on another meaning with an elderly Cash singing it. People leave those who are struggling with mental health and addiction, but death also claims the people closest to you as you age. And that line, "You are someone else, I am still right here," can be read so devastatingly when thinking about how quickly time can pass us by. Thank you both so much for listening and reacting!

I think (and I know I'm not alone), this is the greatest ever cover of any song. A song about drug death and addiction turned into a song about once being successful, but it seeming to no longer matter to a moderrn world. He feared he would be forgotten, Rick Ruben helped pick him up again and with his final song he ensured he wouldn't be.

There comes a certain age where we stop fooling ourselves thinking we could still fix some of the things in our lives, maybe mend some past relationships, or right some wrongs we've made along the way. Maybe that long overdue apology we owe a friend. Where "tomorrow is a new day and things will be different" doesn't give the same comfort as before and we just have to live with the regret.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails is the writer of the song, and it was originally about drug use, and how much he wanted to stop and couldn't, and how much of a monster he became because of it, but Cash took it and essentially used it to say goodbye to the world. His interpretation is about how all the stuff you do in life, and all you achieve really means nothing at the end, and what does matter are the relationships you develop as you go through life.

The original artist (Trent Reznor) found the cover to be so good he said the song now belongs to Johnny. It's one of my favourite NiN pieces. Johnny didn't just do it justice, he made it shine all the more, he made it beautiful. You should listen to the original just to hear the difference between the two versions.

This cover is from a Nine Inch Nails song but he made it seem completely his own and some people prefer it to the original. Legend RIP Johnny Cash 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Not positive but I think the statue in the beginning is of Atlas, who in Greek mythology is the titan who carries the Earth upon his shoulders.

In the theme of aging and loss, you should listen to Glen Campbell's "I'm not going to miss you." The song is about his alzheimer's diagnosis and it was his final track. It's heartbreaking.

People rely on video releases way too much on KZread , this platform has only been around since February 2005 and even then most videos wouldn’t of been recorded in HD, ( yes Dashy I’m old 😂 ) not as old as yer old man though 😂. Your dads a legend ❤❤❤

He had suffered a stroke. He died not long after. The woman on the stairs was his wife, June Carter Cash. She fired shortly after that scene. The woman in the photo is his mother. While this is a cover, Trent Reznor acknowledged that this was no longer his song. It belonged to Johnny Cash.

@@DashyXDAndDadReacts I completely agree. I grew up when Johnny Cash was in his prime. I never listened to country music; however, he was the exception. The Man in Black. Iirc, he may have only been 71 when he passed, but the stroke took its toll. While originally a Nine Inch Nails song, JC took this song to a new level. IMHO, he shows how, as you grow older, and the losses pile up, it changes your perception on what’s important in life. He had many highs in his career, along with many hardships. I believe that is captured here. Thank you for your very insightful commentary through your reaction. You presented the reaction in a very insightful manner.

I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting Try to kill it all away But I remember everything What have I become? My sweetest friend Everyone I know goes away In the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt I wear this crown of thorns Upon my liar's chair Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I'm still right here What have I become? My sweetest friend Everyone I know goes away In the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt If I could start again A million miles away I would keep myself I would find a way

You can see the juxtaposition from the girl and the dad. As soon as he started singing he got super serious and his daughter kept the fake smile up and nodded along. God save us.
