Here I go over a May 2024 study ( see abstract linked below) looking at various emotional regulation (ER) strategies and their relationship to the chronic pain experience. The maladaptive ER strategies such as rumination, worry, expressive suppression, experiential avoidance, and self-criticism were all associated with greater pain (symptom) severity, pain (symptom) interference, and more negative affect (emotion). These are ER areas we want to change and move to more adaptive ER strategies the researchers mentioned such as cognitive re-appraisal, acceptance, and problem-solving.

Jim I love your videos! I’ve heard you mention in a few of your videos that you were able to end chronic hip pain. That’s what I’m suffering with. Is there a video or blog where you describe that part of your journey more? Thanks!

Hi Jim. This is so true. I have always been very emotional and as an adult I suffer chronic pain and it's much worse when I am stressed or upset. Meditation and being aware of my thoughts help. Have you written a book yet? Thanks for your work.
