Eminem is one of the truly legendary figures in hip-hop, and modern American music as a whole. With that being said, his reputation has suffered as the years have gone on. Where he was once at the top of the game, commercially and critically, now-a-days...it's just him and his core fanbase. Today's video is looking at a massive point in his career: Relapse. This 2009 album is arguably his darkest, most theatrical piece of work to date, but people don't see it for the masterpiece that I think it is. This is my time to try and show the world what I see in this project.

    Hot take- if Relapse and Recovery were switched in order they’d both be appreciated more (esp. relapse) Relapse was Eminem’s first album out of rehab and it felt kind of confusing. Something like Recovery was what we were looking for from him at the time. Then for all the people that said “Eminem went pop” Relapse would have been a solid answer for them

    I get your point but I think Recovery was a more mature and vulnerable album, a step forward from Relapse thematically wise and the order of the realeses fits with this concept. That being said I will always enjoy Relapse more than Recovery, to me it’s top 4 album from Em.

    Disagree its old enough now that only people that like it revisit it (why comments on it are nothing but people liking it) people don't generally go back to an album song song from 10 year ago they didn't like. (For instance "big homie" by puff daddy is filled with people talking about what a good son it is now, when back when it came out it got hated on

    Kind of agree with the conclusion that the response to albums like relapse and revival made Eminem shell up in terms of expressing his vulnerability with music. However, I think it's always sad when critics/people throw MMLP2 under the bus as if it wasn't one of the biggest albums of 2010s, and quite a complete project that looked back on certain themes & messages from MMLP in a more mature way. Also, I believe more people listen to Eminem than just his core fanbase, considering how many hits he has.

    Man I’ll never forget going into relapse thinking “damn this is gonna suck” but by the end was blown away by how good it was. For a while I was just convinced that when you have low expectations, you can be pleasantly surprised. But I now know that in this specific case, that was bullshit. Cuz the reality is, this is an incredible album, and people just weren’t ready for it yet. Hip hop was at a weird point in 2009. Artists like T-Pain and Black Eyed Peas had a chokehold on the overall sound of this era. But people just wanted to dance. They weren’t ready for vulnerability like we are today. Don’t forget that just a year prior to this, Kanye dropped 808s & Heartbreaks and people HATED that album. But now today? It’s considered by many to be one of his best projects, and the album that birthed the sound of modern hip hop today. I think both 808s and Relapse are albums that had to come out when they did, despite people not being ready for them. Otherwise music would have never evolved to where it is today for better or worse. Those albums may not have been appreciated then but in the grand scheme of things, those albums will be greatly remembered as classics. Even artists like Picasso, Beethoven, Shakespeare and many others were seen as mediocre artists during their times.

    Ironically he won a Grammy for this album yet he says he cringes when he listens to it lol also he had a Number 1 hit w/ “Crack A Bottle” which is so odd this album to me even tho it got shitted on when it was released, it still was something ominous about it and simply focused and a great concept it’s surely a cult classic and to me this album saw the last of Dr. Dre having a huge hand in the production but tbh this album was the first and last time Dr. Dre had the first and last say on the beats and yet it was the best decision Em ever made cause coming back after his hiatus from 2007-2009 he could just lock in on the rhymes while Dre works on the beats/production. I’ll reckon this album has some of Dr. Dre’s most versatile beats he’s ever done! This album released when I was 9 years old so it definitely holds a special place in my heart and I always found myself when listening to “Same Song & Dance” and “Beautiful” it time travels me back to the time when I first was immersing myself w/ this album.🐐🎯💯

  • @KamiKazuo
    @KamiKazuo9 ай бұрын

    Relapse has the best production out of any Eminem album. It's the first and probably last album of his we'll get where its 95% Dre beats. This was Eminem not trying to chase a hit song or trying to appeal to anyone but himself. It's a concept album which he never did before or after this one. Not to mention, the final track Underground is in a 5/4 time signature which is super rare in rap music. While the subject matter can turn away certain people, that was the point. His technical ability is also next-level. The flows he does on this are more creative than the super fast stuff he does now. His use of multi-syllabic rhyming is also perfectly balanced out with the substance in his lyrics. The only real issue is that the accents that take up most of the album can be jarring. I know Em has stated he used the accents to make the words rhyme better but I would argue that most of the rhymes wouldve worked without the accents. But also, if you need to bend a word to the point you switch nationalities, the rhyme wasn't meant to be. I mean, dude was able to rhyme 'toolboxes' with 'screwdrivers' flawlessly on Survival. The track Framed from the Revival album gives us a glimpse into what Relapse song couldve sounded like without the accents. The fact that this was his first solo project in 5 years and getting completely sober and the whole concept is him being back on drugs and committing heinous acts on people is wild.

    Agree sooo hard with everything you just said, except the take on the accents. They are an integral part of his creativity in this album.. of his choice to let go here. Without the accents, the storylines wouldn’t have hit as hard either. Also, it’s quite an ability. Who else can do that so naturally? I admire it in a way 😂 I would miss the characters he created in these songs though his accents deeply if they were to suddenly disappear. Relapse wouldn’t be relapse!

    Relapse is unique in that it's Eminem's one and maybe ONLY "concept album" that's ever been made by him, and that alone is what gives Relapse such a unique edge among his discography. Though one thing I would like to see is how Relapse (2009) could potentially tie in with King Mathers (2007), his unreleased album and whatever tracks we know were made during his time away from the spotlight. Fun fact, "Careful What You Wish For", and "Beautiful" were originally made for King Mathers, his retirement album made between Late 2006, and very early 2008, and "My Darling" was made at the tail end transitioning into when he finally moved towards the Relapse concept in 2008. So... tracks carried over.

    I'm gonna stop you right there at 10:00, MMLP2 and Recovery were both fantastic albums that should not be mentioned in the same sentence as Revival or MTBMB. Recovery is almost all bangers from front to back. Almost Famous, 25 To Life, Cold Wind Blows, Space Bound, Not Afraid, LTWYL, Recovery is low key his most slept on album. Relapse has a cult following. And MMLP2 has great tracks as well. Bad Guy is lyrically one of the greatest Eminem tracks ever made, followed by the parking lot skit that's a sequel to the skit in Criminal. So Much Better, Survival, Legacy, Rap God, Head Lights, sure this was the album where you could see the decline start to happen, but it was still an extremely solid album. When Em dies guarantee people will look at MMLP2 as a masterpiece.

    I think people were kinda soured on Eminem after the silly tracks from his previous LP Encore that ended up as singles, like "Just Lose It" and "Ass Like That", which made it hard to take Em seriously. He said a lot of that LP was rushed out to fill gaps caused by leaks, but most people (myself included) didn't know about that. So for us, the album was overshadowed or even defined by those few bad tracks. It wasn't helped by Curtain Call, a collection of Eminem finest accomplishments, coming out with "FACK" as the first track. Personally I like FACK, it's pretty funny and the beat is good... but it felt like such a stark contrast to the tracks that follow it, especially with FACK being right before The Way I Am. Gone are the tracks that you grew up with, the stuff that got you to fall in love with Eminem. The Way I Am told us who he was *then*, FACK told us who he was *now*. Then Relapse drops... and it's still full of Em putting on accents. And 3AM as a single was OK if you like horrorcore, but going so hard in that direction was kinda new and too out there for a lot of fans. He'd talked about dark and personal stuff before, but now he's rapping about drinking someone's bath water. Plus all the stuff referencing grape (with no G), and bars about sexualising child/teen stars, it was getting kinda stale for an audience that might have started to wonder if they ever really liked that, or just put up with it because the rest of Em's stuff was dope. Relapse certainly has merits, but it's easy to see why it wasn't well received. If there really is an alternate history where we got a better Eminem discography (11:28), I'd say that's it's a timeline where the Encore leaks never happened, or Em and Dre decided to just ignore them, so it didn't get filled with stuff like "Big Weenie". But ultimately, it wasn't the public that decided Eminem's future, it was his own choices. Critical reception can make you better, but when you're on Eminem's level, only he could make himself fail.

It's fascinating, artistic, raw and truly an amazing experience as a whole listening throughout from start to finish. The first time I've heard Beautiful at that time was a masterpiece. Good video overall! Thank you for this review

    That’s how I experienced relapse growing up through high school and rapping insane/stay wide awake/beautiful etc with my friends and even feeling at the time this was my favorite and most played album. Relapse does have everything in it and the way Em raps on it was out of this world it’s sad he doesn’t like it

    For me, this album is similar to The Shinning. The Shinning was panned when it first came out, and now it's regarded as one of the greatest horror movies ever made. I remember when this album first dropped, I didn't think much of it. I rarely listen to Eminem anymore, but for some reason this last year I went back and put it on. By the time I got to "Insane" I remember thinking "is this his most creative album that I somehow slept on?" I think the extra songs on Refill are just as brilliant. Now I'm obsessed and can't stop listening to it. His macabre story telling, flow and rhyming is impeccable. Pure creativity. What I think is most interesting is Eminem doesn't like this album and has said in an interview that he puts Encore and Relapse as his least favorite albums, with Relapse probably being below Encore. But he did say that this album was the first time he had fun rapping in a long time, and I think it shows. I hope it gets a cult resurgence, because it certainly deserves it.

    I heavily agree, Relapse is disturbing and ridiculous to say the least, but Eminem's creativity and ability to take risks, really pays a lot, specially when you look at how amazingly written some of the songs are. Because you have incredibly vulnerable songs like "Deja Vu" and "Beautiful", tracks like "Crack a Bottle" and "We Made You" that are more easier to listen to, and insanely written tracks like the rhyme scheme in "Stay Wide Awake" or his flow in "Underground". And if that wasn't enough, he even dropped Relapse: Refil (Deluxe) which contains amazing songs like "Buffalo Bill", "Drop the Bomb on 'Em" or even one of the best concept songs I've heard from Em called "My Darling".

    "Relapse" is one of the best albums I've ever heard. It's so damn playful with the sounds, yet so dark. It plays with the proposition of a better world, a better outcome to be had - while unfulfilled. "Deja Vu" is the greatest track on there. The level of insight Em shows there is beyond. To even think that this album is not even mentioned among his all time best records is just simply baffling.

    Growing up I was big into eminem. I remember when relapse was still new and I bumped it a lot. However it’s undoubtedly just not up to snuff of his older stuff. I occasionally will go back to a song from relapse onward. But I still listen to a lot of his first three albums all the time, they’re in my daily playlists. It’s hard to live up to those instant classics. I understand that and I respect eminem for being able to change things up and stay relevant. For what it is, relapse was a really great dive into a side of eminem we’ve never seen. However I’d be lying if I said I don’t just want a blonde white boy saying fuck you to the world while getting drunk and causing mayhem.
