Emily Webb's goodbye

The clip is originally from Our Town the movie, Paul Newman as the stage manager, by Thornton Wilder.
I personally do not own this play.

I remember when we did this play in tenth grade, my teacher had us all write down three things that were the most important objects in our lives. She read this monologue in class and when she got to saying goodbye she read off all our things and then her own things. Needless to say she was emotional and the entire experience was a real eye-opener, it really gets you thinking about the wonders of waking up and appreciating life every day

Somehow I was not aware of this film, though I have seen the original play--which I consider the greatest American play of all time--a number of times. I first saw the play on television in the 1950's. Paul Newman, who plays the "Stage Manager" in this version, played George Gibbs--the young man--in the TV version. It's interesting when actors come back to a play several years after their first appearance to play an older character. Carol Burnett, for example, played the princess in "Once Upon a Mattress" on Broadway and years later played the Queen in a TV production.

I bought the DVD of this production. There's a fair amount of music in the play. Thornton Wilder specified certain hymns and songs at specific moments. During this scene and the rest of the play, it's the complete lack of music which makes it work. Making it pretty with pretty music is like pouring sugar into a glass of red wine. You might think it'll make it better. It won't.

@@robertyates9500 I just watched that episode. I've been bingewatching The Wonder Years. Boy that show, as well as this monolog really hits differently in my 40s. As a person who just didn't know how good I had it as a kid, watching the show brings such nostalgia. The suburban life, the parks, the barbeques, the swings, the friendships, first loves, the crickets chirping in the summer, no responsibilities, and precious moments with family. The time goes so fast and I've come to realize that all of those things and people will only be memories in a few more years. And one day, I too will have to say goodbye to this world and let go of all the memories, the beautiful things I have come to love, the nature, the beautiful sunsets and sunrises, the ocean. I've come to realize how temporary everything is, and how important it is to savor every moment and appreciate life. Too bad we don't realize these things sooner in life.
