Lilli Palmer interviews Thornton Wilder in 1952

Ойын-сауық

This is episode number 17 of Lilli Palmer's NBC daytime program. Her guest on this filmed program is Thornton Wilder who, rather than discussing his own works, discusses the Spanish playwright Lope de Vega. Interviews of Wilder are rare and it is wonderful to experience his enthusiasm for Vega.

She used to be big here in Germany. As a kid I really loved her and was a huge fan. Just recently my sister told that she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

Ich kann aus diesem Interview bestenfalls die Hälfte verstehen. Aber ich könnte ihrer Sprechweise immerfort zuhören und sie dabei ansehen. Diese Mimik! Die runden, erstaunten Augen!🥰

I fell in love with Lilli Palmer when I was 17 and she was executed by a Nazi firing squad as William Holden shouted desperately to her from his prison window. She has been my anima ever since; but here she is, ten years earlier, beautiful, charming, brilliantly intelligent, interviewing someone on her level.

I read that Lilli did this NBC show while playing BELL BOOK AND CANDLE. The show lasted for 26 weeks. The play ended in June 1951. So it would be in 1951?

I'll have to dig out the print but I'm pretty sure the date on the printed leader was 1952. But that would have been a broadcast date. The shows were shot on film and broadcasts went well into 1953. So it very well might have been filmed in 1951.

Would be stranger still if they ignored her ravishing beauty, congeniality, and pixie-like charm. Now, THAT would be strange! Wilder, too, comes across as most likeable, and natural; for all his worldly fame and literary success, he doesn’t seem all that full of himself.

I'm a fan of both of them ... I'm 65 and remember seeing her in a number of older movies that my parents watched . Some of us are just surprised that she ever had a TV show and how she seems so much more knowledgeable than most actors and actresses about the stage and plays . As talented as Thornton Wilder was I don't think anybody is surprised to find HIM so knowledgeable here .
